I wouldnt doubt Mxy's presumptions are true. The smudges of permanent marker dont seem to be in the same place as any of the markings in the first picture, making me believe that they ARE fake smudges and that whoever put them forgot to place the smudges in the right place...

Actually, I think that is from the other side of the unit, the picture that I didn't share because of languaged used by Gus Sorrola in his autograph.
