Anti-Virus Help
« on: November 07, 2008, 06:13:10 AM »
I have AVG anti-virus and the anti-virus part needs to be updated, but it doesn't seem to be working.  Every time I go to update a window pops up and says:

Update unsuccessful.

No update files are available so the update process can't be finished.

What does this mean and how can I fix it?

Thanks Vintage, it's awesome!

I hope that it's because you have the free version, which I thought it went the way of the dodo bird?  For free stuff, I now use avast...

Then again, I  could be wrong?!  LOL

Post from their forum says....

AVG Update Failed - update servers availability
Posted by: umelec - Moderator (IP Logged)

"Our technology department is currently working on improving one of the main servers responsible for providing updates of AVG Free Edition. This maintenance may have, under specific circumstances, effect on availability of update files on our servers. Backup systems, which are now in charge of providing updates, may be from time to time overloaded with customer requests and we are doing our best in order to improve their function to remedy this issue. If you encounter issue with “Update failed”, please retry in a few minutes to update AVG manually (open AVG User Interface, click the “Update now” button).

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. In a week time, new improved update servers should be available. "

I have AVG as well, but since it comes from my school I believe they pay for it but I could be wrong about that.

This happens to me sometimes as well, but it's usually only the update manager that shows an error, saying it cannot connect to the server. Apparently AVG starts up faster than my internet connection does (don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing just yet)

I just click on the taskbar icon and update it manually, but if you're using the free version then I can't help you.

Thank you Tanger!

You probably have the OLD free version, 7.5.

The newer, bulkier, too-much bloat version is 8.0.

I think they just recently stopped sending updates for 7.5 now....

You can use Avast instead, but you have to re-register every year (they'll tell you when) to continue to get their updates....

OK thanks for the help.  I do have the old 7.5 version
It was my parents who put it on there in the first place and they never update
anything so I guess I'm the one who will have to keep the computer from getting
overloaded by viruses lol.  Do you recommend avast over AVG?

Thanks Vintage, it's awesome!

Yes, I do now, since AVG got to be almost as hard on your machine as Norton now....

I'm not sold yet on Avast, either, so ... hopefully some other freeware AV software will pop up soon....

I upgraded to the free AVG 8.0 and it has a tiny footprint compared to Norton.  Norton made the computer almost unusable, and I wouldn't have considered any kind of gaming with it running.  AVG isn't that bad.  Avast may be better - other people besides Mxy that I know, who know about these things, say it's very good.

I have used AVG for years, just recently upgraded to 8 with no problems.
Program is hardly a resource hog compared to nortan, though programs like Nod32 could use less than AVG now.

Im sticking with AVG simply because im used to it and I trust the software, had too many problems with others over the years.
Should also note I have full version and not free, there is some differences in the programs.

Avast causes problems.

Although rarely, when it updates it can cause BSOD's, corrupt files, generally making your PC unusable. I've seen it quite a few times compared to the amount of times I've seen a problem with AVG, which is 0.

I've used AVG for ~3 Years, and I've never had a virus, but I have had Spyware/Malware.

AVG + SpyBot: S&D + MalwareBytes = Never had any problems, and I never scan anything unless forced ::)

My roommate complains too much when I use anything other than Microsoft's OneCare, which is payware. And she was already paying for it anyway, so I figure, "meh, let's get them all going on one bill".

But if you REALLY need to stay with a free way against viruses, people are saying that Linux's free Windows emulator, Wine, is getting better at running newer games and stuff. I don't trust it, but you can try it.

(Incidentally, if you have an old computer that you want to breathe more life into, Linux is good at that)
Congratulations!
