Well in MY opinion, either Eddie Van Halen or Angus Young. Nothing quite like waking up to some Van Halen or rocking out to some AC/DC during a Yankees/Red Sox game!

I personally have no real view on who's the best guitarist - there are so many candidates!

... Tell us YOUR opinions on who's the greatest guitarist of all time. Let us know!

WHAT'S ALL THIS ABOUT SYNSTER GATES? He's a really bad guitarist - all he does is solo in thirds! ... So let's not say synster gates is the best....TOSH

Oh, and Tom Morello is a good guitarist, but I'd definately [sic] not say he was the best. Again, all the guys i mentioned could wup him with one hand behind their back.

Steve Vai could utterly SLAY Hendrix at guitar - listen to his stuff and you'll see he's the better guitarist in skill by far. ...

... I agree - most people will say their favourite band's guitarist is the best, hence loads of people saying Synyster Gates when he's RUBBISH!!!!!!  :toot:

While Eddie Van Halen is a very good tapper, he's a bit of a one-trick horse. All he can do exceptionally is tap - at everything else he's merely above average. There are better all-round guitarists out there ... you'll see that Van Halen is no way the most skilled guitarist out there

Hmmm...Angus Young.

I quite like his soloing, but....well....it's all simple. Not that simple is bad; it's just that I'd never say he was the bast guitarist...

Well, jim360, I'm not dismissing anyone who is actually a candidate for being the most skilled guitarist of all time - FACT. People like Angus Young, Slash and Synyster Gates are, quite simply, NOT the most skilled guitarists of all time. ... My personal opinion upon who could be the best guitarist of all time is the one who can do the most styles exceptionally.

Can you a) accept that maybe the question you asked cannot be answered, and so if someone comes up with an answer that you don't agree with then that is their opinion and you should respect it;

and b) explain why at the beginning of this thread you said that you were eager to know what people thought, but since then have demonstrated not only otherwise but also have been, I think, just plain rude about disagreeing?

Soooo... can people answer this question: Who is their favourite guitarist and why?

I respect all reasonable answers, jim - all those who are actually candidates for being in, say, the top 10 of all time! A few of the guitarists mentioned (eg Synyster Gates, Angus Young) are quite simply not even candidates for that title.

And I am keen to know who people think is the best guitarist - I am also keen to point out that some of the people mentioned are most certainly not the most skilled guitarists of all time. For example, when someone mentioned Buckethead, i hadn't even considered him. People have also mentioned Carlos Santana, whom I need to look into.

Furthermore, if I have been rude to anyone, then I humbly apologise and ask for forgiveness. This is a very passionate subject for me - I can get a bit caught up. Once again, sorry.

Also, I believe that the question can be answered - based solely upon skill in a huge array of fields, not whom the your rfavorite guitarist is.

And as to the last question of whom my favourite guitarist is, I'd have to say....um....I'm not sure. Steve Vai certainly comes up there, although I'm not too keen on some of his songs......Jon Gomm is just incredible and I havn't heard anything by him I don't like or wish i could do.....also the guitarist from Pink Floyd, oh waht's his name - ah, Dave Gilmour! is incredibly tasteful and expressional in his playing. So those are some of my favourite guitarists.

BRIAN MAY!!!  He's teh awesomeness, and it's because of him that I'm tyring to learn to play guitar myself.  Also, since this is an opinion poll, I'll say my dad, because he's just that awesome :zoot:  Oh, and before I forget, Jimi Page would have to be up there too.

Knight...who in the world is Knight? hahah I'M BACK!!!!!

Jerry Garcia (The Grateful Dead)
Jeff Holdsworth and Trey Anastasio (Phish)  PS. the new Phish Live at the Roxy album is great...8 hours of music! 3 nights from 1993
Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)

My main point is ... as much I love modern rock, I don't think it's that hard to be considered a "good guitarist" or even the "best" at this point.  The guys I mentioned above have true musicianship and creativity.  They did things a "best guitarist" now could only dream of doing.

Oh yeah ZOMG...Knight is back!

I don't know if there can be "one" single greatest guitarist of all time.  People here have mentioned greats of different styles, moods, etc that definitely deserve to be on the list but just one?  It is like saying what is someone's favorite color, every one is different and humans by nature change.  A favorite today may be just "oh yeah, I used to be really into <your_favorite_name_here> a couple of years ago".

That being said, there are some awesome guitarists out there.  Some that I have not seen on this list are Jeff Beck,  Joe Walsh, Vernon Reid, Steve Howe, and a few others which really surprised me.  I can't give one and only one greatest guitarist of all time but I can give you a list.  And any list has to include (in no particular order):

Jeff Beck
Joe Walsh
Vernon Reid
Steve Howe
Jimi Hendrix
Stephen Stills
Neil Young
George Harrison
Pete Townshend
Jerry Garcia
Trey Anastasio
Jimmy Page
Carlos Santana
Ritchie Blackmore
Randy Rhoads
Tommy Iommi
Angus Young
Mark Knopfler
Pat Metheny
David Gilmour
Chuck Berry
Bo Diddley
T-Bone Walker
Stevie Ray Vaughn
B.B. King
Eric Clapton
Duane Allman
Keith Richards (before drugs trashed him)
Joe Perry
Brian May
Frank Zappa
Robbie Robertson
Prince (that's right, I said it...)
Johnny Winter
John Cummings (aka Johnny Ramone)
Kurt Cobain
Kirk Hammett

and of course,
Les Paul

I just noticed that there are no women on this list so I am adding:

Joan Jett
Poison Ivy   (Lux died recently BTW)
and
Nancy Wilson

This is by no means a complete list.  Everyone out there can probably find someone that is not on the list that rightly deserves to be on it.  But here are some of my favorites.

Great guitarists are like potato chips, you can't have just one...

Totally Munching Out-ly Yours,
j

Well, jim360, I'm not dismissing anyone who is actually a candidate for being the most skilled guitarist of all time - FACT. People like Angus Young, Slash and Synyster Gates are, quite simply, NOT the most skilled guitarists of all time. There are hundreds of guitarists out there who can not only do the same thing, but did it before anyone else.

Take Angus Young for example. A good songwriter and a talented soloist, he sounds very good. BUT his every solo is made from the minor pentatonic scale and that's it. Slash - another inventive songwriter and soloist, but again, nothing much original - BB King, Clapton and Jimmy Page make up his style. The same sort of thing goes for Synyster Gates.

Then we move on to people like Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen, who are very innovative in a certain field. Van Halen took tapping to a higher level and was a very good soloist, but couldn't do anything really exceptionally except tapping. Yngwie Malmsteen helped invented shred, but he can't do any other style of music exceptionally.

My personal opinion upon who could be the best guitarist of all time is the one who can do the most styles exceptionally.

i really do agree marty

but i think slash is best!

im as stealthy as a dog??? :yesyes:

Glen Benton from Deicide. I haven't seen any posts about bassists, and being one myself, I figured I should bring one up. He's the bassist and also the lead singer for them.

Thanks to Manticore for that!

Thank you BFM_Arya for those!!

Peter Green of course. Used to be the guitarist for Fleetwood Mac, before the women got involved.

Check him out on Myspace
