Why?

Because IT'S FREE, that's why!

I.e. It uses my computer (cycles) THAT I'M NOT USING to do these things!

With FOUR cores on my CPU I can play Halo (with all my other programs loaded, like xfire, ventrilo, fraps, etc.) with no side-effect running BOINC (SETI@home) on TWO cores. And when I leave my machine for five minutes or more it starts to also make use of my GPUs (on my video cards), as well.

Sure it's a little bit more electricity, but hey, that I can handle!...

Also, for those that are a bit confused about all this, visit the BOINC & SET@Home pages and read up on these projects.  (Historical note: BOINC was spawned from the huge success that SETI@Home itself had in its early days....)

Keep your suggestions coming in, thanks!  (But I've now decided that my second project will be a terrestrial one, so don't bother with any of the off-earth projects any more, TY.)

[One final note: I am not/have not dropped SETI, I'm just ADDING ANOTHER PROJECT to my BOINC account so that my machine will have something to do with its spare time when they're out of SETI data for it to process.  It gets lonely and hungry with nothing to do sometimes!]

Yeeeeesss....  And on Macs, too.

I have neither of those things, and my purpose is to make use of my Windows i386 machine's spare cycles when SETI@home has no data for it to work....  (No reason for me to put something in my Linux partition, either, as that still won't be a stand-in for SETI work being unavailable....)

So it needs to be another BOINC project.

I'd say do the LHC one, because that way there is less chance of a black hole appearing when they get it working... I think... not actually sure about any of my info on it
Thanks Rypto!

Well, I've passed YA big milestone: half a million compute hours!

Still no little green men (or women, for that matter  ::) ), but I'll keep looking!

My goodness. Congrats again Mxy! I remember when the first post was made like it was yesterday. v.v
Being a good racer in Halo isn't just about getting the best times. You have to know where your teammates and enemies are, and most of all... how to be crafty! XD -nods-

Oh... and "v.v" = sad face.

Props to Plixity for the first sig, Slayton for the Season XIII trophy sig, and Jane for the banner! Thx guys! ^.^

Okay, I gotta ask: How/why do you have 5 machines running, much less for a year now???

I run it on my system whenever it's on for my use (idling)  or I'm using it, i.e. in the background....)
