He had a heart attack due to the the fact that he was so afraid of the bridge collapsing. The bridge collapsed due to an earthquake. Seeing as how the bridge was metallic it most likely gave off some kind of noise due to the vibrations. Very few other natural disasters will cause a bridge to collapse. (Wind? Not unless it's some kind of Hurricane.... Water.... self explanatory... Fire? Really... maybe...)

Edit: You said that he was touching the bridge. Lightning.... The bridge was struck by lightning when he was touching it. That's what caused the heart attack that killed him. If it was storming then he might have been trying to take cover from the rain which appeared out of nowhere when he was on his daily walk.
