Okay, here's the problem: NOWHERE on the ENTIRE INTERNET is there a device with that SUBSYSTEM ID (SUBSYS_001817F9), meaning I cannot find out WHICH model of all the listed models of wireless networking chipsets made by Atheros your is.

FYI: What's going on here is that you have a "generic brand" device there, from a manufacturer that is NOT a registered vendor with Microsoft, and thus you have a GENERIC device identifier (that uses the core ID info from the chip maker that made the chip on the PCI card that someone ELSE made.)

This leaves you stuck - for now - until I can figure out some way to find out WHICH drivers you need from Atheros....

BTW: Contacting them would be likely be useless, because I don't even know if they make network CARDS or just the networking chipsets....

Stay tuned!

Well, when I try to run the wireless network configuration that comes with the card, it gives me a "Load Library <0000> AtherosAB.dll fail!" message

Vista finally popped something about about the error....let me take a look quick

The model name of your network adapter is Atheros AR5005

[EDIT] Attempting to download the drivers now...let's see how this works.

Well, apparently there is ONE driver that works for all their chipsets EXCEPT THEIR LATEST ONES (after their 5005 series.)

download their driver here, unpack it (Oh I hope that you have winrar installed...  ::) ) and install it.

I downloaded it and virus-scanned it, and it's legit.

If you DON'T have winrar installed we'll need to find some way for me to get them to you....  ::)

I have Winrar :P but anyways, downloaded what you suggested, but now what?  There is a .sys file, and a file that opens as a security log. Also, a file that opens in notepad. What exactly do I do with these files?

Well, you're using Vista, so I won't be able to tell you EXACTLY, but in XP you'd do:

Start -> Control Panel -> Add Hardware

and skip any/all automatic stuff that you can until it comes to a list or something that says "Add new hardware device" or "Manually" or some such and choose the manual option.  Then navigate to the "Atheros_driver" directory that you expanded from the RAR file and let-er-rip!

See if you can follow through that while I look for a web-based Vista Add Hardware walkthru out there....

The following hardware was installed: Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adapter

The software for this device is now installed, but may not work correctly.

This device is not working properly because windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

That means "you're out of luck, bud!" since you're using THE latest drivers for that device.  (Ref, scroll down to "Code 31")

I.e. You can't use that device in Vista....  :'(

You're only hope is to try contacting Atheros and see if they have Vista drivers available for the 5005 series, or buy a different WLAN card that IS supported by Vista (and likely then, also in XP....)

SORRY!

I've never used the adage "beat on it until it works" for DRIVERS before!  :embarrassing:

...And FYI/FFR: here's a link on "how to look up drivers" right here in the forums....

thanks :)

And I had to beat on it until it worked because there were two "Atheros 50005g wireless adapters" in the device manager, and one "Ethernet Controller"(which turned out to be the right one that needed the drivers installed XD)

Ahhh....

When that happens the best/cleanest thing to do is to DELETE THOSE DEVICES and reboot, which should leave you with just the one device....

But HEY!  What you did WORKED!     :yesyes:      So forget about it now!
