GIMP Help
« on: August 21, 2007, 01:45:08 PM »
Hey Everyone.

I am currently working on a Skorcard banner.

I am stuck on a few things.

1.  I need to make some transparent boxes where the text would go.

2.  I have a picture of a warthog that I need to cut from the background and paste it on the skorcard background. Also I need to resize it.

If anyone could help me out on these things, I would greatly appreciate it.

To do transparency, do the following
Click on Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel
Then select the area you want to make transparent, either with the square or select by color, etc...
Once highlighted, press Ctrl-X to cut that area, and it should leave a transparent space in the image.
Once done, save as a gif, because jpg doesnt support transparency.

To copy from one image to another, select the space to copy (or the entire image), and press Ctrl-C.
Switch to the other image, and press Ctrl-V.

To resize an image, right-click on the image and click Image > Scale Image.
Select the pixels you want, and click Scale.

To crop a picture, select the area you want to crop around, and right-click, then click on Image > Crop Image.

A combination of all these is how I made my Apple-BSD logo on the left.

Another question.

I made some fire text. And I need to move it to the signature background. So I know I have to select the shape using that scissor thing. What do i do after that?

What do you mean by move the text to the background?  You mean you want the text to be behind some other part of the graphic?

To be honest, I have not done a lot of work with layering in Gimp.  I know you have to create layers as you make the image, and that way you can move parts of the image behind each other.  Can you post what you  have, and what you want to do and I'll see if I can help?

When i say transparent boxes, I meant this.

The boxes where is says the rank and name. I meant that.

I dunno if I should have said Translucent.

I'm still having troubles with selecting an image from a picture.

I have this awesome master chief picture that I want to cut out, but when I do it, it rounds the edges taking some of it off.

Now sometimes it will just blur the edges.

Another problem I have is resizing an image. When I make it smaller it gets blurrier.

Can anyone help me?

Way i do it is, play with the size until its the size you want, remember the scale ratio/size you want it to be, then start afresh and resize it straight to that as keep changing it makes it blury.

The Tutorials that Plix sent me were awesome.

I'm almost finished my first one.

I just need some cool text and a funky background.
