Ok sorry for the pun, but found this news article on the possible future of dvd players interesting.

Shrimp eyes could lead to new generation of DVD players http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/6431589/Shrimp-eyes-could-lead-to-new-generation-of-DVD-players.html

If we only see in only three colours (:P), what does it matter how complex the DVD player is if we're still only going to see in those three colors?

I demand a pair of shrimp eyes! In butter.

Maybe I misunderstood how the eyes are being used. And no, I don't mean in a garlic sauce. Is it to improve the way things look on screen, or is it a disc reading thing? I think I was distracted by the humans only see in three colours...

Interesting

However we are almost at a point where flash memory is cheap as optical storage. I believe optical storage's days are numbered. Optical disks are using smaller and smaller "bumps" to store the data onto, which means they are more susceptible to damage.

Here a cool disk to look at

http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15805/1/

10 layers, each layer is 32GB = 320GB total storage :P.

Blu-ray and DVD etc use a small spectrum of light to read the data. I think they are proposing using multiple wavelengths to increase a disk capacity. Not sure how they will do that though. Current disk work with using very very small bumps to represent 1 and 0. Blu-Ray uses higher frequency violet light so they can make the bumps smaller. After that you can either make the bumps smaller again by going ultra violet or make the disk thicker by adding multiple layers.

Is it possible to just have a full functioning, high quality DVD movie on a USB flash drive? If so it seems that would be easiest/safest/smallest way to make and sell movies, since discs are always going to be flimsy and easily damaged

I must say i don't have any real knowledge about this sort of thing, but that just seems like a logical thing to me...
