thermal compound*solved*
« on: December 19, 2009, 02:39:03 PM »
hello
long time coming here but i have a question

i received one red ring on my xbox 360 and need to do some work on the inside by my self because i, nor my parents, are willing to pay 120 dollars for it to be fixed because it has no warranty.  so it involves taking the GPU heat sink off which has a thermal compound on it along with the GPU itself.  my question is, do i need to take off that old thermal compound and put new compound on it? or could i leave the same stuff on there?  thanks for any help and responses.

I have asked the same question for my PC a short while ago. Mxyzptlk posted a link showing how to correctly apply the thermal compound and I think it says to clean old stuff off first using a specialist solvent.

The thread is >HERE< if you want to take a look...

*Edit:- I am imagining any mention of removing the paste first... but Arctic silver do a solvent and purifier... That at least suggests the need for the old paste to be removed before applying new stuff. :)

Just do a product search for  "Arctic Silver Thermal material Remover & Surface Purifier" and check out the product specs.

Sorry I didnt see this thread. Yes you do need to remove it, however you dont really need Arctic silver's cleaning kit. Just some rubbing alcohol will do fine, but if you dont have any of that then buying the cleaning kit is handy. You also need to buy Arctic silver 5 or MX-2 they are both good/best thermal compounds.

1. First clean the old compound off with alcohol or ArcticClean kit
2. Place a dob of thermal paste on that area that requires it
3. Get a credit card (or folded paper I find works well too :D) and smeering the paste over the area so you get a THIN layer covering the area that will be making thermal contact (adding more thermal paste if required to get thin layer).

Note: Dont go overboard because when you put the heatsink back on it will press the paste, so if you add to much it will ozze out. So hence why THIN is in capitals :P.

Good luck.
