If by avi files you mean the video that fraps creates, then it is definitely worth it.

It's not worth it to try to compress most (modern) video file formats, as they all already ARE compressed....

AVI IS one of those "modern" video formats, so... don't bother.

They are compressed, but you can compress them to about half their size with software like Ben suggested.

But do you suffer a loss in quality?

avi is a container, and the codec used by fraps isn't exactly efficient on space compared to h.264 or xvid.

While it isn't worth it to zip/rar the video, it is worth trancoding it to h.264 or xvid/divx

Not noticeably, no.  Most tools will have options on quality vs file size.  Whether cutting it down by half is worth all the effort is up to you, I wouldn't probably bother.

The FRAPS FAQ recommends either Tsunami MPEG Encoder or VirtualDub.

I don't know how to work either, I've usually used Adobe Premiere and/or After Effects (I forget exactly). But then again, I'm usually adding titles and stuff into it.

If you just want a straight conversion, Windows Movie Maker supports AVI (I think)
Congratulations!
