What if he wanted that word to be uncapitalised? Then, is he not beyond a normal human's reach in perfection?

I mean, doing everything good, correct and accurate is what normal people think of perfect, but what about when you know you are wrong, yet doing it nevertheless? Doesn't that require having complete knowledge and then go against it?

It depends on how you define useful. Classics students I know argue that you need to know about where you have been to understand where you should go next, and that the history of Greek society is as relevant today as it was then. Students of Art say that high art advances our understanding of ourselves by reading what the painting says about the artist. Is not a Renaissance sculpture just a reflection of our ideal form? Are not the tales of the great battles of the Middle Ages full of profound tips on military strategy? Does not a good book take you beyond the realm of the physical into a place where no-one else can touch? Is it not vital to enjoy life rather than merely to quanitfy it?

I tell them that's tosh.

Note I said humanities, not social "sciences" And I mean useful as being more than just being something that's enjoyable and interesting. The uses that one would consider to come from the humanities come out through the social science aspects of them. I greatly enjoy a lot of things in areas such as philosophy and so on, but that doesn't mean they're actually useful past that enjoyment and engagement of the mind.
