Thread revival, eh? Good thing, too - there's a book I'm reading now the definitely needs sharing.
A year or so ago, my friend mentioned a book about how meaning can arise from meaningless objects, saying that it was one of the most interesting and difficult books he had ever read. A few months ago, I borrowed this book off him, and he was right. This book is the most fascinating, confusing, entertaining and challenging books I have ever read. The book is called Gödel, Escher, Bach, by Douglas Hofstadter.
In his exploration of how a message arises from randomness and how any message can be understood, he brings in art, music, typographical number theory, DNA, zen buddhism and various other disparate threads. Although it is sometimes hard to keep up, if you can, it's definitely worth it. This is a brilliant read.
Yes, for sure one of the most mind-blowing books out there.
