Try a pit trap with cati in the dungeon. Thay way you still get the items with none of the risk

Iv'e just started this game and it's EPIC! Can anyone give me some tips to make an epic house and mine shaft?

I can help with the mine shaft okay first have a 7 x 7 room with at least a 4 tall ceiling. make sure to have plenty of ladders you make these by have sticks in the shape of an H. find the very center of the room and have a 3 x 3 block area and start to dig that out. till you hit bed rock or need more supplies. and if you want to make it bigger make the shaft 5 x 5. make sure you have floors so you can find natural caves and stuff. also when you get the chance remove your ceiling and replace it with glass so during the day it lights up your shaft better. this is the way I do it and I am not saying it's the best way or anything but it gets the job done .

Mining i can help with. Houses.. not soo much. Mines usually a castle on a terraformed island.

For mining dig down, but not STRAIGHT down, as eagles stated. instead make a staircase as you dig down. when you start, dig one down, then over then 2 more down, then one over, then three down, thus making a staircase. IF you dont find some massive cave system, strat shaf mining. 50 forward, 25 left or right, the 50 forward then repeat

Um... Too complicated folks:

You can make a spiral staircase straight down from anywhere in a 2x2 profile.

I make these when I get to the end of a long section in a deep cave/mine and don't want to walk back out, by digging a spiral staircase UP.

[Note the need for caution when doing this tho!  You don't want to be carrying lots of stuff since you might break into a vein of some sort and get killed! THAT is why I have storage boxes at the bottom/top of these that I unload into before digging....]

Todays adventure:
Decided to search for more nearby caves...found one..went all the way down, adding lights, and signs to find my way back out...very bottom...a few blocks above the worlds bottom, I come across a lava pit...and 5 diamond ores
Lotsa gold on the way down to..no dungeons found yet tho

This is the bridge I had to make to get to it and that building is a spiral stair case 3x3 areas all the way down to mining shaft base

That structure does not seem to have the proper supports. Or any at all. I don't think you should be in there...
