Ooooh, im going to enjoy this thread. I have many songs and soundtracks that have burnt in the noggin from my earlier days of gaming.

Alien Trilogy
One of the most enjoyed game sound tracks of all time, Alien Trilogy for the Playstation 1 / Sega Saturn / PC. I used to bang the disc into the stereo and just listen to the soundtrack on its own. But playing the game, i think this is what made the game most enjoyable. Slow and spooky, or fast and intense which all significantly added to the experience of playing Alien Trilogy when i was younger, spending up to an hour on each of those 32 levels of dark corridors trying to find my way around, hoping id not run out of Pulse Rifle Ammo... Who was i kidding, i always did... This is Track 6 from the PC version.

DOOM/DOOM2/ULTIMATE DOOM/FINAL DOOM/DOOM 95 etc etc etc
The first FPS game i ever played. The most memorable and the songs... I remember every single one of them today! Just added to the whole equation of what gave me nightmares as a child!  That classic MIDI sound. Love it! A number of rock bands have redone a number of these songs. ROCK! This is the opening theme, Episode 1 Level 1 - At Doom's Gate.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2
While Sonic 1 was just as equally memorable as my first platform game, i preferred Sonic 2 music. Especially the "Chemical Plant Zone". I used to hum to the lead melody in this song to an extreme! Infact i just did again while searching for it.

Resident Evil
One word, suspense... No i cant just say suspense. Calm, keeps you on your toes, but you always drop one as soon as those darn infected dogs blast through the windows and come after you... Worse than a bloomin Jack-In-The-Box that game for that sort of thing... Click.

Left 4 Dead
I really cant pin down a specific favourite campaign sound track. They all work well. But my favourite song has to be on every campaign, before you prep to leave the safe rooms. Just sat in there listening to this while you read all the past and fallen survivor's messages on the walls. Just works so well for getting yourself into that post-apocalyptic atmosphere.

I may post more... however i just got Left 4 Dead 1/2 fever and must go shoot some zombies.

F.E.A.R
Red Alert 1 (forget what it was called, the March or something like that)

The Halo series in a nut shell has some of the best music in any of the games I have played, all of it completely composed for the game itself, not music pulled from elsewhere.

Half Life also has some great music made for the game itself.

The early NFS games had amazing music, made by Romi Di Prisco who has made music for literally dozens if not hundreds of different games. Shame the newer ones no longer have music made for the game itself, just random songs and artists.

Any song from Sonic CD

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_CD

I just recently found that disk again, I was only 5 years old the last time I saw it (too bad it isn't compatible with Windows 7  ). I remember I would pop in the CD and just listen to the music, and not even play the game. It came pre-installed with the old HP Pavilion platform. (I mean REALLY old, think circa 1993-1996)

Heres the Theme song to it.

Interestingly this game was the first appearance of Amy Rose (ya know, the pink Hedgehog).

Pause at 0:12, she looks nothing like she does today.

1)  The Dynasty Warriors (Playstation) series has the best game songs I've ever heard
2)  The Cabal MMORPG (PC) is a close 2nd

Um.... nothing else really worth mentioning

Try these youtube videos:
AmZlNyGEptM  <-  Tabbing and learning this song is among my life goals... I've found no tabs online for it.

Lol, now these 4 songs are gonna be filling up my playlist for the next day or two....

Good choice whoever picked Dragon Age: Origins. Inon Zur is a master.

This will be a top 12 in no particular order from me. The post itself is more of an 'at the moment' list for me as it is painfully hard to pick what my all time favorite pieces music are.

1. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows Of Amn - Theme - Michael Hoenig http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U88zyFLzIXQ

2. Icewind Dale - Theme - Jeremy Soule http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i381VcMpoMQ

3. Icewind Dale - Easthaven - Jeremy Soule http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6WhjqYst4s

4. Icewind Dale II - Skeleton Of A Town - Inon Zur http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrWfJ9-zMCU

5. Lord Of The Rings: The Battle For Middle Earth II - Men Of The West - Jamie Christopherson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pItsaCjJjM

6. Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic - Bastila Shan's Theme - Jeremy Soule http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeoGAKXsMjE

7. Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic - Korriban Sith Academy - Jeremy Soule http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-8I-SET1ec

In no particular order:

Ring Around the Rosie ["live"]

Twisted Metal 2 [PS]

Red Rover Red Rover... ["live"]

Bubble Bobble [NES 8-bit]

*edit*

But my #1 is... Skyrim

It's pleasant, symphonic background music - and the fact that it changes based on your in-game status, such as when a potential threat has spotted you! - was easy on the ears for MANY straight hours of play!
