Yes, it was 1996 in the 'canon' - in Deathly Hallows it mentions that Lily and James Potter lost their lives on 31st October 1981, when Harry was one year old. Therefore he turned eleven in 1991 (remember that his birthday is in July) and was fifteen in the 1995-96 school year. This, incidentally, makes a scene in Half-Blood Prince the movie become apocryphal: in the opening scene, Death Eaters are scene destroying the millennium bridge, London. This wasn't opened until June 2000, but the canonical year for that scene is 1996.

And I guess those two answers are correct, really...

Fudge would only be kicked out in The Half-Blood Prince after he is forced to step down as Minister For Magic.

Yes, Albus Dumbledore was kicked out. But I was looking for two people (one man, one woman) who resigned from the Wizengamot in protest at something the then-minister For Magic did.
