duz anyone know why the microwave spins

Well I hope that your MICROWAVE doesn't spin when running!?!!  :o

The little table inside might spin though, and that's to distribute the beam more evenly onto whatever's sitting on the turntable.

Otherwise you can get uneven cooking of items, which is, of course, undesirable.

(FYI: Back in the early days of microwave cooking you had to cook for shorter periods and rotate the plate of food every so often by hand to circumvent this problem....)

Funny story:  When I was complaining about the secret tricks no longer working to make my hand-me-down microwave work, my mom asked why I don't just get a new one.

Me - They're like a hundred dollars.
Mom - If you get one that doesn't have the rotating plate, they're a lot cheaper.
Me - I'm not rotating my own food! Who do you think I am? Betty Crocker?

Microwave in a pyrex mixing cup hands down its much faster and its a more efficient use of energy since you are exciting water molecules directly with microwaves rather then first heating a metal kettle to transfer energy into a water.

What is it for then? Make the impression the microwave is doing something?
