It shuts down (powers off/reboots, w/e), with no warning, sign, or notice of ANY kind?

Netbook, laptop, or deskside?  (Model # would help....)

On a sticker on the back or in the documentation that came with it....

You have either a power/heat problem or a driver problem.

Start keeping track of how long it takes to happen from powering on after it's been off for 4 hours or more.  If the times cluster, then you have a heat/power issue.  If they're random, it's drivers....

Is it "stock," or did you remove/add to/change any of its hardware?

Nope.

It's got to be one of these:

Desktops:

    * Inspiron 300
    * Inspiron 400
    * Inspiron 518
    * Inspiron 519
    * Inspiron 530
    * Inspiron 530s
    * Inspiron 531
    * Inspiron 531s
    * Inspiron 535MT
    * Inspiron 535ST
    * Inspiron 537MT
    * Inspiron 537ST
    * Inspiron 545MT
    * Inspiron 545ST
    * Inspiron 546MT
    * Inspiron 546ST
    * Inspiron 560MT
    * Inspiron 560ST
    * Inspiron 580
    * Inspiron 580S
    * Inspiron One 19/19T

See here.

Did the problem seem to start happening anywhere around the time that you moved the drive?  (Like even within a few weeks afterward?)

Ok.  I found a thread on the Dell site where many (dozen+) have the same problem with the model 560.  ('Not linking since I haven't read the entire thread....)

Some blame software or the HDD, some the PSU, and yet others video drivers, but as you're running W7 - and regularly connect to the Internet (judging by your postings!   :winkgrin: ) - you likely already have the latest video drivers.

How old is it?  Several people have gotten satisfaction by getting replacement systems from Dell....

...Seems the 580 has the same problems, too....

As Mxy said, you may still get it replaced, for example : i know the GX280's are really old, but due to a known mobo issue, i can still ring Dell and get it replaced. (and have done, with no quibble)

Have you opened the case and checked for excessive dust accumulation?

I had a PC at work that out of the blue started to shut down on its own randomly, I broke it down and the thing was FILLED with dust and the heatsinks literally burnt my skin on contact from the heat.

That could be a power issue, or just a video card (AKA Graphics Adapter (GA)) driver issue.

Cleaning never hurts, either, and results in power issues (due to overheating.)

What OS, BTW? (So you can get latest video drivers, possibly.)

Another possiblity would be that your system memory is damaged. My PC had the same symptoms: rebooting out of nowhere without any warnings or infos. Finally I checked my RAM and one of two modules was damaged.

To eliminate this oportunity you might want to run Memtest86.
