You'd be better off using Xfire and adding your favorite servers by IP and joining games that way.

You should first probably do a test by jotting down an IP:port address (for one of the BFM servers, listed in the right-hand menu here), firing up Halo and then joining a game via "Direct IP" and see if/how that works.

That will help determine if you're having a local software or halo network server problem....
