Computer and Internet speed.
« on: May 30, 2013, 05:59:32 AM »
Quick question, I just got off the phone with century link, and since I live on the outskirts of town they are only offering me 512KB per second Internet. He said I would have trouble using it for gaming and watching YouTube/ Netflix on my computer. How fast is this exactly?

Second thing is I'm looking to buy a new computer, but I was looking at one at SAMs club or Walmart because there cheaper, and I know they have a bad video card that comes with it, but I have my own video card to install it with. I'm just wondering if this is a good idea. I have my own top of the line keyboard, mouse, and headset.

~Thanks~

Well, keep in mind that ISPs tell you "best possible" speeds, and you may not actually get anything close to that in reality - and there's nothing that you can do about that except complain, which is usually like talking to a brick wall....

512kbps isn't bad, but then that will be your DOWNLOAD speed, and it's your UPLOAD speed that matters for RTS gaming, so ask them what your UPLOAD rate will be.

Once you get connected, do this to both measure your actual rate(s), and to determine the setting that you should use for Halo in particular.

The equipment (esp. any/all router(s)) you get/use, wireless (enabled & active, even if you're NOT USING IT) and simultaneous use with cable TV all can cause problems, as well as the number of simultaneous users.

I won't make any recommendations on off-the-shelf computers, but there's a reason why all of mine are builds of my own....  ::)  link

Typically streaming audio takes 15-30kb/s while streaming video can take 128-250kb/s typically...

It would be enough for youtube videos, but it's not lightening fast.

For comparison the average MP3 is about 3 megabytes so that would take 6~ seconds to download at max speed and if you have nothing else going.

If you're going to get a laptop I would suggest Sager... desktop I would suggest a custom build as Mxy said... I won't recommend any off the shelf computer.

Well, I have the video card I need, mouse, headset. So could you post some links for a tower and monitor? That would be awesome, I'm tight on money because of emt advanced classes, so I would need to know the price as well with the links. And mxy, that computer is amazing! Love your setup, I have a razor black widow ultimate, the key board light up is amazing! Thanks for the help btw!

I can't suggest anything without knowing your price range.

A basic budget build PC costs about 600 dollars, 800 adding in monitor and accessories.

Overpriced... thing is still running a PENTIUM processor....

Only thing not shown is a 50 dollar case... and you said you already had a GPU? So take 160 bucks off that.

This is similar to my PC I built and will blow that HP out of the water.

How is the graphic card? Is it at least good enough to run halo, guild wars 2, ect on med to high settings?

I don't know what card it is you have...

That card I selected could run them all on max without problems. Heck I'm running Halo and Secondlife on max with twin 3870s and only 1gb of graphics.

I'm running Sapphire 3870s LOL

You'll be fine with a 5770.

These are my specs and they run Mass Effect 3 on 40FPS at max resolution and 1600x1200.
