Linux, Installing Other Things Is Hard..
« on: July 30, 2007, 08:29:34 AM »
Ok so i recently downloaded Linux for two reasons.
1. My computer needed clearing.
2. I got bored of XP.

(Oh, and it looks nice on my new screen.)

But I'm having trouble installing, well anything first i tried MSN, that didn't work.
Then i tried a special version of MSN released for Linux, same thing again.
And the same with Xfire, i would have asked someone on one of those things but i can't because they won't install.   :(

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I assume you did install ubuntu, if so just use a little scripting app called WINE.
Use the package installer to look for it an install it.
Download the windows version of msn (this might work...)
the type in the terminal (might have to konsole to gain root access but probably not) "wine *insert file locations of msn*" without the * and ".
See if that works

Well, the WINE app did manage to get it running, and it seemed to install fine but i can't find it anywhere, and in terminal it says it failed.  :(

Did it say why it failed?
Check to see if it needs root access (it might). if so use the command "sudo" in the terminal. Only problem with that is i dont think that can be used with any other prefixes eg. WINE.
So download konsole (in package manager) and select the tab that says root terminal or something like that, enter your root password and use the original command i gave you (wine *location of file*)

Im on holiday for the next 5 days so you will need someone esle to help.
Good site for trouble shooting is the ubuntu forums http://ubuntuforums.org/

Hope you get it working man  d_b

On Linux, you can use Pidgin (formerly known as Gaim) for MSN, AIM, Yahoo, Jabber, etc.  Someone is working on a Xfire plugin for it, but I dont think it is finished yet.  They say some functinality is there, but not all.  Pidgin has binaries for Fedora, CentOS and Redhat.  Other than that you'll have to compile from source.  Same goes for the xfire plugin.
