Title: Punkbuster hates meh! ((FixeD))
Post by: Fraggle on August 09, 2010, 05:01:15 PM
So, I have been getting frequent kicks by Pb for the following.

Any ideas?

A Pb update and a CoD4 re-install (including Pb) have both yielded no results.

Haaalp?

PB CPR! Hang on Punkbuster, don't go toward the light! Fight, fight, fight!

Anyway, the internet says it's probably a firewall problem and to tell your firewall that pnkbstrb.exe is good.

Firewall? but ain't that really really hot? (j/k) I will need a bit of help on how to do this though... I'm running Vista home basic.

~edit. PnkbstrA and pnkbstrB appear to be enabled on my Firewall thingy.

Fraggle, either something is blocking the PB service, or your PC is simply choking and get send the handshakes as often as required.

Try, only running cod4. no vent, nothing else running, and run it in a window. this way any "wanna keep blocking this, do ya punk? huhhuhhuh?" windows firewall messages will become visible.

Anyway, it's something to try if your game seems a little jumpy due to low FPS. I don't know if there's a way to switch to window mode in the options menu, I didn't see one at least. You can do it through the console.

If you want to see how it looks:

Press the tilde key ( ~ ) to open the console.
Type /r_fullscreen 0 and press Enter.
Type /vid_restart and press Enter.

That will refresh everything and apply your new setting. You can do it on the menu screen or even while you're dead and waiting, it shouldn't kick you out. After that, you can change the screen resolution by going to Options > Graphics > Video Mode at the top. The lower the resolution, the smaller the window.

If you hate it and want to go back:

Press the tilde key to open the console.
Type /r_fullscreen 1 and press Enter.
Type /quit and press Enter.

The vid_restart doesn't quite work to refresh it, so you'll have to exit the game (/quit) and restart it.

Lemme know :)

Well, I just ran the promod server with no problems for about 10 minutes. i reckon my connection's being choked because I'm trying to play during 'peak time'. (crummy isp)

Anyways, i'm going to do some PC maintenance and see if I can't boost it up a bit by clearing out non-essential files and de-fragging/virus checking/spyware checking etc... It's about time I got round to doing it anyway.

I know this won't help much, but it sure won't hurt.

hmm a poor conection or high ping to a server wont get you kicked by punkbuster the only way it will kick you is if punkbuster stops working / has its conection cut this can happen for many reasons but the most comon is the firewall  or antivirus and from the sounds of it your useing the basic built in vista firewall (better known as a wet paper bag) if this is the case what i would recomend is check your antivirus and make sure punkbuster isnt being limited by it and secondly vista's built in firewall is pritty much useless at stoping network attacks but its exelent at stoping you and your programs from useing the network and working corectly i would recomend you get rid of the useless vista wet paper bag and get a propper / better firewall heck zonealarm  is a 1000 times better and is free. :)

Thanks for the tip Equinox, but the problem seems to have been rectified now. I had a trouble-free session last night.

As for the firewall, I have had no issues with Vista's firewall so far, it is perfectly sufficient for what I use it for.
