I physically cant wait for this, as I have been waiting for so long after enduring morrowind and playing the cheat role of Oblivion, i really want to see how they're handling the whole controlling two hands things (rumoured a while back cant remember if it's been confirmed due to lack of keeping up with news.)

I however will most likely love it, and dark elves look cooler on this one :)

Inferno.

For the Graphics Card, is a Radeon 6870 better than the 5850? To me it seems like it would be, but I don't know if it is.

Find each of those on the chart here (http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=88&pgno=4) and see how they compare....

From my quick look the 5850 is (oddly?) just slightly better than the 6870.

The only specs where the 6970 is better is basic memory speed and bandwidth, yet the 5850 has better rendering specs.  Go figure....  ::)

My world must be perfect... my last exam is on November 10th.... Winner!

Will definitely be buying this one. Disappointed I am just below the recommended specs.

A site I've grown to like is www.game-debate.com

Skyrim is listed there as Elder Scrolls V and you can check out your hardware for it.. you have to know your makes & models though.  And it will let you enter a different system spec if you're thinking of upgrading to see how it pans out.

Keep in mind that Game-Debate usually compares to the HIGHEST specs of the game, but as a site it is pretty neat IMO.

A lot of the comparisons and such are free aspecs of the site, although if you choose to be a premium member (for the lofty cost of $1.50 a month - which is startup as the site is new, but if you go for it now your cost will never increase) you can compare computer builds for possible future systems you're considering and see how they rate against what you're running now... I used this when considering a new CPU to buy me some time before a whole new system would be required.

Game-Debate said Slayton wouldn't be able to run Dead Island very well but he plays it just fine - his higher end graphics card carries the day I think over his older CPU - but that is also a result of - as I said - this site comparing to the higher end specs for a game.

I'm sure arguments can be made for some of their specs but all in all I think its a fairly neat site.  Lots more to it that I won't go into here but worth checking out for yourself. :smly_a_wink:

Okay.  24 hours straight in the game and here are my observations:

- The new UI semi-sucks: The "Local" maps are useless, with icons now in place of detailed maps of cities and such that you can't find what you're looking for without hovering over each icon to see its name. (The world map is pretty cool, tho, with a very pretty/nice 3D look.) To drop the second spell assigned to one of your hands, you have to pick something physical up in it and then "drop it" to empty your hand!

Also, it's WAY too obvious that they designed the interface for consoles instead of PCs: Your mouse is more of a burden than an interface-assisting-device....  :-X  (Get ready for your left hand to be on the <Tab>QWER/ASD rows, PERMANENTLY, and your right hand on your arrow keys....)

- The new Skill system is AWESOME! You can manage every single aspect of every ability to your own desire.

- Everything is just as gorgeous in Skyrim as it was in Oblivion, and more!: Environmental stuff - esp. waterfalls! - are beautiful! (Even at the lowest Visuals setting!)

- The story lines are deep, detailed, and excellent! (However, I am one to listen to EVERYTHING that a met character has to say.  I'm a nut for the back-stories in these games....)

- The game IS HARD!  (This is A Good Thing!)  Stick to the offered growth path or you'll be dead in a minute.  (I.e. Go to the Greybeards when they TELL YOU to go to the Greybeards!)  Sabre-Toothed Tigers, Trolls, Giants, and Dragons are instant death.  Steer clear of them early on. (Update: I can now kill STTs, once I reached lvl 7.  ;D )

- The dungeons are ... cities.  They are HUGE, and many levels deep (6?), and full of traps and denizens!

- There is an even MORE overwhelming wealth of side-quests.  If you like to manage them "regionally" (do a bunch in one area of the map, then move on) you have to go through your quest list one-by-one, tho, to figure out where they are/were....  ::)  E.g. In just doing the "main-line," initial quest (Greybeards) I picked up almost a dozen side-quests.)

- Roaming critters are EVERYWHERE, and those that attack now give you "fair warning" - no more wolves jumping you from behind!  Any that will attack you will howl/roar/scream before attacking you now!  ($10 to the first person that bags a rabbit with a bow, tho! Game is MUCH more like real life now!)

- The game hung on me twice....  ::)  :'(   Also, after a long, uninterrupted session it seems to get laggy.  (Exiting the game and re-entering with your Save makes all better, tho.) [Hint: DEFRAG your system - 3 times! - after installation...]

I'm sure there's more to report, but I'm getting back to the game now!

P.S. Thank you Bethesda!

I have to agree with Mxy,
definitely my pick for 'Game of the Year'
I have seen a few minor glitches but if you have played TES before, you know you should save often.

Quests are much more detailed and a lot more harder so make sure you carry health and magicka potions around because you will need them. If anyone plays this, you should be picking skills you like second and the ones you need first (learnt that doing the first Thieves Guild Quest, needed the first sneak ability to do it properly)

As for the dragons, they are not as strong as I would have imagined (mainly because I have set it on the lowest difficulty).
Best way i found to kill dragons is to just get a bow out and shoot till your hearts contempt. Also if they land, you can get up close and do double sword power attacks.

I love how they have done the favourite/hotbar system in Skyrim. It makes it much easier to switch between Weapons, Shields and Magic in combat giving you a wider range of combinations without having to go to the items menu every time.

The one thing I am having problems with is making money. It is no walk in the park and takes forever when you need to buy lockpicks, potions etc.

The thing I'm looking forward to most is finding all the weapons/apparel that is shown during the loading screen (almost all of them look amazing, while the others are just good :))

Btw, completed the Mage Guild storyline already (not as long as Oblivions, and you only need 3 spells, 2 of which can be picked up during the questline, to complete it) and love the equipment you get at the end (though it isn't the prettiest looking gear)

Also, if you dont see Xtr3me soon, you know where I'll be  ;D

Well Mxy, looks like you owe me $10! Though it was very difficult...

I love the dragons. Like boss fights, but way cooler!

Also, I love the graphics

Although this game isnt my cup of tea it does very very good. GOTY might be a three way race between human revolution, Zelda SS and this.

I rented it for a day just to see how it is. I do enjoy it a lot. itdeed it is tough and somthing i want to play more. i think i will get it for the xbox but hopefully they fix the glitches they have in it. i had to restart my xbox roughly 6 times cause it froze once in a while going to a area weather its in a building or out, basically the loading transition between places. i got decently far for 4 hours and not knowing where i was going half the time. i got to the point where i fight a boss and 2 other people. one using magic which kills me fast :P Enough of me rambling on The game IS FANTASTIC!!! graphics great, story line Great and i do like being able to choose my own words spoken. almost but not feels like playing legend of the dragoon again in 1st person RPG but like i said its not the same lol

My starting character is my "usual:" Dark Elf Stealth with Bow+Magic; Thief/Mage; Member to: Bard, Dark Brotherhood, (Imperial) Legion, Companion, & Stormcloak(!?!?)  :o

Replies:

1) Loot, Loot, Loot!:  If you're not having problems toting all your stuff around, you're not looting questies and dungeons enough!

2) Best "cheat"/short cut I've found: Pelts, pelts, and MORE pelts! Make 'em into leather and leather straps (at a 1::2 ratio, which is tricky math since the strips come in fours...) and "forge" Leather Braces to gain Smithing skill. (I was a lvl 86 Smith at character lvl 14!)

3) Yeah, the bows are WAY overpowered, but the new "zoom" feature being stamina-based is a GREAT tradeoff!

4) Um, there are different types of Dragons, you know!  'Seems like there's three tiers, which I've labelled:

NORMAL: <12 arrows/20 secs dual blast (of opposing type. I.e. Fire versus a Frost dragon.)
BLOOD: 12-25 arrows/40+ sec dual last w/ "Impact"
and BLACK (of which I think there is only the one?): I have no idea as he toasts/freezes, and/or zaps me to dust in like 15 seconds everytime I try to target him!  :siderofl:

None of which should be tried until level 12-14, really, unless you've got a tank or something going on*.

Finally, it hit me yesterday why the new quest style seemed so familiar: In addition to their detailed, well-thought out brawler/stealth maps, they've added ... Laura Croft-style Tomb Raider complexity and "puzzles" all over the place, too! (I's say their easily three times more difficult than the Oblivion ones....)

5) I still hate several aspects of the UI, despite having learned how to deal with it. (Which from a game design perspective, is EXACTLY BACKWARDS!)  The only saving grace is "game-time "freeze" while you fumble around with items sometimes. But the fact that sometimes the "E" key CONSUMES an item and other times it could also USE an item, and yet another time it DROPS an item, is CRAZY!  (And then the "R" key jumps into the act sometimes, too!  :-\ )

Sometimes it "blocks" on stacks of items, like say six or more, requiring acknowledgement with an additional action, but ... why the random quantity limit??  Almost all double-digit quantities block, but sometimes items stacks of just six, or even FOUR, block too?!?

6) SEPARATE-OUT WEAPONS AND APPAREL INTO TYPE GROUPS!  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! . . . ALPHABETICAL?!?!

7) And yes, I could've made good use of the "9" and "0" keys as EQUIP slots!

To whit, I have: 1:Flame, 2:Freeze, 3:Zap, 4:Bow, 5:Sword/Melee, 6:Voice #1; 7:Voice #2; 8:"Active" Spell.  I'd love to have the other two so I could have an alternative weapon in one, and then a BLOCKING item, as well, or maybe even potions or tomes....

And 8) I WANT TO ORDER THE DISPLAY OF THE "Quick" list myself, TYVM!!

Anyway, I've also stumbled into two nasty bugs which stopped serious quest lines cold, and it crashes on me at least twice a day still, too.  :'( (FYI: If you run into strange quest difficulties you might want to check the Bethesda Tech Support FAQ, as they've got dozens of issues that aren't code related, but are rather complex synchronization/timing issues and the like, and your problem might be on their list.  (E.g. "If character A happens to meet character B somewhere else before meeting to complete a quest step Q in city Z, the quest cannot be completed.  Period.  Ever.")

These are problems that are NOT fixed in the 1.1 patch, either, BTW....

And yet... it consumes me....  ::)

* Which reminds me of the GREAT QUEST with Barbas the Telepathic Dog!"  Not only is the whole thing hilarious, but Barbas makes a great tank, since he's immortal!

What's your "worst predicament ever" in the game so far?  Can you beat this scenario?:

Noticing a dragon flitting and careening about attacking some NPC(s) semi-distant across that huge open plain area (West of Whiterun, I think?) I set off to Take Him Down.  When I get in proximity to the fray I notice that he's been torching a troll. I hang back and wait a bit....  (! )  The troll gets lost, or runs away, and I start to move in on the dragon... who begins flaming the ground just over the hill I'm cresting.... Another critter, perhaps?

No. The dragon starts chanting in his native tongue, flames the ground on hos side of the hill, speaks some more Dragon-Tongue, and leaps up into the air, giving life to ... another dragon.  I just watched the Black Dragon bring YA buddy to life.  Great.  Time to leave this party!

So I turned to my right to take the shortest route to the woods (which are too far off to be of any help, really, but hey! Gotta TRY for some cover!)....

Unbeknownst to me, while I was occupied the The Dragon Birth Ballet a bandit trio: A NecroMage, a fully-armored Berserker with a huge axe, and a bowman had come charging out of the woods - probably to attack the dragon - BUT HEY!  Here's a lone guy that's easy for the pickin's!  As I did my about-face to go back over the hill the NecroMage yells: "OH NO YOU DON'T!" and starts blasting me with lightning.

As I crest the hill - it's actually been some time since I was back on the other side of that hill, you know - there are THREE giants herding their pair of Woolly Mammoths my way....

.

.

.

When it rains . . .  it kills you, right?

I dropped my quite-tensed shoulders and watched the slo-mo of the NecroMage frying me like a 2GW Tesla coil in an electric fry pan.

Then I reloaded from my last save and steered clear of that whole area, 'cuz I KNEW I wasn't going to make it out of there again, or EVER for that matter!  ::)

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Sells 3.4 Million Copies [over US$450m] in Two Days

By Leslie Horn, PC Magazine

November 15, 2011 10:46am EST5 Comments

(http://i42.tinypic.com/2ic70hs.jpg)The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has sold more than 3.4 million copies in retail stores in just two days since it debuted, according to VGChartz.
Of that number, 2.5 million units were sold in the Americas and the other 950,000 were sold in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. VGChartz noted that this figure doesn't include digital sales.

Skyrim is the fifth installment of the popular Elder Scrolls series. It launched at midnight on Friday and costs $59.99 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

PCMag analyst Matthew Murray called Skyrim, which earned an Editors' Choice rating, is the best installment in the franchise to date, offering the "most detailed, immersive and engrossing" experience yet.

"Bethesda Game Studios has outdone even its superlative work in Oblivion to create a hyper-realistic gaming environment where nature itself becomes magical," he wrote in his review. "You honestly never know what lies beyond that bend in the road up ahead, or what you'll see when you reach the crest of the hill you're climbing."

It seems 2011 could be the year of landmark video game sales. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 also went on sale last week, and in its first day, the game sold more than 6.5 million units in North America for a total of more than $400 million in sales. Activision said Modern Warfare broke the record of 5.6 million units and $360 million sales set last year by Call of Duty: Black Ops.

For more on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, see 7 Things You Should Do in Skyrim* and the slideshow below. Also check out: If You Like Skyrim, You'll Love These Games.

* Just FYI:
1. Play through one of the main plots.
2. Climb every mountain.
3. Track down all 13 Guardian Stones.
4. Join a union.
5. Settle down.
6. Indulge yourself.
7. See where the road takes you.

nice info there mxy,
I restarted my game after 3 exhausting days of playing because I didn't like the choices I made with my Skill Perk Points.

atm, I have a Nord who I have mainly focused on sneak/pickpocket (including all the smithing) and soon to do up the rest of bow and one-handed skills.

Couple of little things I love about the game:

and yes, I agree that they made this game for the consoles as it is relatively easy for me to work around everything

Well I have finally had a go at Skyrim. There is some bad and ugly and probably a few concepts that I would like refined... but I think this game will shape some of the RPGs in the future. I really hate the menu system although it is fully functional. No matter what I try I don't enjoy 'favourites' as much as the weapon quick keys. Pausing the game during battle is a bit annoying to change weapons to what may effectively be your only other setup.

What I do enjoy is the skills system. It really enocurages you to use ALL your skills. I am loving the smithing and collecting a million dead foxes... hoping to wipe them from the earth so when the year 2000 comes around they are extinct. :) (they are a massive pest in Australia)

The sense of adventure when playing is fantastic. The scenery magnificent. I am really enjoying the layout of the random and set quests. I love the new spell effects... but I do miss some of the old freedom with spells Enchantment is another favourite of mine, I think the way you learn how to enchant items is brilliant.

I did however get so bored with the tutorial when I first played it that I actually ran away from going to the first town and went exploring. I managed to get to level 5 just messing about with a character and even found a shout. The dialogue can be extremely slow and annoying, but at least the quests themselves seem very good.

I also enjoyed it when a giant hit me over a huge mountain. Kind of annoying I didn't quicksave... but it was quite funny.

Alright... off to kill Mammoths!

I'm probably going to wait until the after Xmas sales to get this game. I don't really want to pay ~$90 for a game which I will most likely play once. Oh and I will be getting it on the 360 for sure. Will probably get AC: Revelations at the same time and hopefully trade it in after I'm done with it. In my experience with offline RPGs, I don't want to play them twice.

LoL!

Yeah, I've got quite a lot of cabbage (over $50,000 gold, to be exact!  :P   FYI: I plan to buy Proudspire Manor ASAP just for the gorgeous views!)

I'm a bit of a "neatnick"/packrat wrt dungeons: Once through a dungeon I fast travel back and forth until I strip them clean, selling EVERYTHING.  Hence items and gold is not an issue.  (I also have every bit of storage available in my main house - Breezehome -  in use to store stuff as well. A nightstand just for potions, another for smithing/forging stuff, books, and most importantly, ingredients!)

If you're going to get the console version, I'd suggest that you wait longer than that: Wait until they come out with the first (larger) patch that fixes some of the important (like MAIN-STREAM!) quest bugs that you CAN'T GET PAST WITH A CONSOLE (because you can't go into console mode as you can on a PC to get past the bugged parts.)

E.g. You can - more likely WILL - get stuck when attempting to complete the MAIN QUEST.  (See "Bugs," here (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Elder_Knowledge).)

It was a simple matter for me to open the console window and type the command "setstage mq205 80" and then be able to play on....

Good thing I've been quick saving... wandering around a dungeon and found an enemy that one shots me at level 10 with shout, ranged or melee. Was never going to win that fight! Save for another day... I'll return to take him out later :P

Wow.

I just spent a very engaging and exciting 15-/20-odd minutes in my toughest raging battle yet: The "Containment" quest in the College of Winterhold quest series.

As if it wasn't bad enough being attacked by those dozen-odd Ice Wraiths, I had a Frost Dragon there AT THE SAME TIME!  (Anyone else that does that quest please let me know if that's "normal" for that quest, because if it is, it's a DOOZIE!)

Despite the help from the two college mages the wraiths killed my steed ("Frost," which I got from another quest) in the heated battle.... :'(

First time I've ever had to use potions to refill my Magika, too! (And mine regen's at 125%+....  :o )

*edit* Oh yaaaah!  Lookit who's Archmage of the college NOW!   :yesyes:

I took on Mxy's idea of storage places. For now i just have the one at the Riverside hotel place. That one chest is a valuable chest lol.

I just started playing Skyrim yesterday.  Bethesda used a similar engine as Fallout 3/NV (one of my favorite games) so Skyrim felt very familiar.  I recognized some of the recycled audio from Fallout too

I did not know the skill of the mobs though, so I picked a fight with a mammoth at level 4 and had to kite it around for about 5 minutes shooting arrows back at it.

Edit:  They aren't joking when they say 7,000 steps...

Nope they are not. Although I'm level 15 and finally got around to running up them :P

I defo need to look for more side-quests.  I'm done getting the horn for the Graybeards and I'm only level 6 because I've rushed the main questline so much.

:yesyes:

Oh lucky you. No, I was not fortunate enough to have the Dragon there at the same time, thank goodness. It was quite a tough little battle, and its awesome being Arch-Mage huh? :yesyes:

Spent 4 hours playing it yesterday... Then I passed out. I had done the early shift on 2 hours sleep so...  But hey putting the game as priority over sleep just puts it into perspective!, BUY THE GAME.

I took on Mxy's idea of storage places. For now i just have the one at the Riverside hotel place. That one chest is a valuable chest lol.

I keep killing my horses... What, so theyre not warthogs. But its burning holes in the pocket!

I just noticed the text in red: One of the notes that appear at game start warn players against storing stuff anywhere but in their owned houses, as items stored otherwise are NOT necessarily going to be there later....  :o

 ::)

(This is why I store it all in my HOUSE (Breezehome.)  (Also, I don't store stuff in my other houses, since that makes finding things later nigh-on impossible!)

That takes me back to Fallout 3...  When I had about 2 tons of stuff in one locker next to my door in my Megaton house <3

Haven't gotten to play Skyrim much this week, I'll pretty much be playing it all weekend though.  I'll have an update then.

Yes: Patch v1.2 has been released....

However:

Quote
The official PS3 Skyrim forum is reporting that every type of resistance is no longer recognized in the new 1.2 patch
"Magic resistance, elemental resistance, and poison resistance simply don't happen anymore. Your mage with 85% magic resist has 0%. Your Nord that has 50% frost resist now has 0. Your vampire that's supposed to be immune to poison can get poisoned.
Apparently true for NPCs and creatures, too. You can kill a Flame Atronach with fire now."

* PC players: Turn off auto-update in Steam by right clicking Skyrim properties>update tab>do not automatically update game. *

If you saved your game with the 1.2 patch; deleting it will not help. It will require the patch for it to load up.  (I.e. If you've installed the 1.2 patch, you're stuck with it now....)

Bethesda is aware of the problem

Among other problems, apparently....

P.S. This is why I wait and get patches a looong time after the first release of (virtually any) software I use, and also why I do NOT allow ANY "automatic" changes to my system, ever. (Once I've done a regular full backup I manually activate updates and downloads, checking them all before installing them....)

In one side quest in Riften I had to collect debts, someone wouldn't pay. So instead of going to the guy who they owed money to get info to hold against them (i.e break their prised urn to make them pay), i killed him, but managed to get away!  But couldn't finish the side quest as a result. (i didnt want some side quest listed for the duration of the game that i couldn't even complete).

So I had hit level 14 but because of the above have had to back track on my saves to level 11 so I could get this quest it done right.

Im looking after my horses better now... But its so fun to glide off cliff edges.  ;D

There is a simple fix for this problem I found on the Skyrim forums. If you go into Steam, right click on Skyrim under your library and check the cache for errors it should scan and get it working.

And as of yet... no dragons flying backwards! :)

Mxy responses to the string of previous posts:

- I'm running my graphics on "Medium," but with a few tweaks to the fade settings (Actor higher, grass lower, and items/objects higher) and I think it looks gorgeous!  (When I tried out different settings before it "permanently" screwed up my graphics, so I did a full re-install and left it at the recommended "Medium" setting, and just tweaked the view distances....)

- All I had to do was to "pick up" (click on) the urn for that quest and the owner of it folded ASAP! (I never had to break anything, but I did have to fight one guy tho, I think....)

- There are a LOT of places that you can "fence" items to remove their "stolen" status! (What I don't like: If you have ONE of several duplicate items that is stolen, they ALL show as stolen in your inventory! You have to take them out one at a time and put them in different containers to see which one is stolen!   )

- Yeah, I'm on my third horse now....  (WHY DO THEY ATTACK DRAGONS WHEN THEY LAND?!?!) I miss Frost the most.  :'(  Gonna wait until I can keep them safer and get Shadowmere then....

- No NPC in the game that's important to another plot line or quest will ever die, unless you've completed all quests that require them. (Hint: If you know this about some character you can use them to tank for you in a fight!!) I don't think this works for any of the "followers," tho....  ::)

- Um, I'm a "save-monger." I'm up to save #1743 right now.  (To avoid the sluggishness that comes from having that many saves "active" I regularly move out all but the most recent 20 into a location on another drive, thus also keeping my "C:" drive nice and clean of those "useless" GB of files....) I pretty much save before opening every new door in a dungeon, or sneak around a corner into a boss's room. Saves are cheap.  Keeping them around and going back when you need to is NOT, though, as it takes a lot more time sometimes. [Note: I also use saves to "mark" piles of stuff that I want to go back to pick up in dungeons. (Remember: I CLEAN OUT EVERY DUNGEON!....)]

How do I "mark" stuff, you ask?: I do a save of my character looking at the loot, and write down the save #. Then when I have a "break" in the Skyrim action I'll go back (yes, sometimes I have to pull the "save" from my archive, but NBD there) and "go to" that save, find where it is on my map, then go back to my active game state and go there and pick the stuff up!  As a result I own EVERY PIECE OF DWEMER STUFF I'VE EVER ENCOUNTERED IN THE GAME.  :o   ... I also have over 300,000 in gold!

- Ya, early on I gave back the Gold Claw as well, not knowing it was a "key...."  But going back and stealing it back was no problem-o, and I can even still do business with those characters!  ;D

- The "mask collection" was also in Oblivion (ES IV).  I'm glad they used it again!

- When an NPC that I "like" or utilize a lot - like my "follower," Lydia - dies, I go back and do that part over.  (Usually this just means telling my follower to "wait" or finding a place further away from everyone else to which I draw the dragon to fight it  ;D )  Once I had learned the Dragonrend shout, killing dragons became much more "manageable!"   (FYI: I have 11 more dragon souls than I can use right now!)

Finally: I've just about reached my hoarding goal, so expect an image soon!

When I logged in to play Skyrim today I was surprised to see the worst lag I've ever experienced in a game on my computer. I've been running it just fine up until today. The computer seems fine and my other games aren't lagging. I used to run Skyrim on Ultra settings (with the exception of lowering Antialiasing a bit). Sometimes when I felt (more likely imagined) lag in Skyrim, I lowered it to High quality and all (imagined) traces of lag were gone. Now, I cannot run it on Low settings -- it lags just as much.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

It's unplayable.

The latest patch caused a few performance problems for some people, while fixing problems for others. If you updated or changed your video drivers that may also have affected the performance. If it was a driver update simply roll back to the previous driver to fix the problem.

After doing the vampire quest in Morthal, I seemed to have caught vampirism.  I wasn't aware of this until it was too late and everyone was attacking me

I worked for about an hour to fix it and then decided to just start a new character because I didn't like my Redguard anyway.  On Saturday morning I started a Archer/Mage Wood Elf hybrid and I'm loving it so much more than just being a melee.  I bumped the difficulty up all the way because things seemed so much easier on the new character.  I'm already level 10 and finding tons of side quests to do that I never noticed before.  I'm in the process of attacking Whiterun to take it over for the Stormcloaks.

I am not surprised at all that you found the ranged combat more interesting... or that you needed to bump up the difficulty. The simple fact is that you can kill anything from a range if you know how to go about it. Magic is super powered... especially if you use both hands and make them stumble. It's almost too powerful! (although a welcome change from the previous scrolls where magic was really difficult). The combat system I agree is floaty and definitely so in comparison to a few other RPG games I've played recently.

Or dual-cast Frostbite FTW vs other "flamethrowers!"

(Also Frostbite FTW for remote-detonating Rune traps!!)

I'm finally starting to work with - and spend perks on - Alchemy & Enchanting, so once I've gotten all new, better buffs I'll probably bump the difficulty up another notch....

Also, I now have 18 more dragon souls than words!  (I don't even know if there are 18 more words to find in the game?!?)

I thought they'd stop fighting me once I defeated Alduin....  ::)

FYI: I stock up on "Cure Disease" potions and always drink one after leaving anywhere I found vampires. (I've been a vampire enough in Oblivion to know that I don't really like it: Too much maintenance...)

ROFL-time!: When I view my list of stored books, it takes me a full two minutes to scroll through the list by holding down the down-arrow key!  :siderofl:

I think I'll still wait a week or two and let other folks play guinea pig on this patch too....  ::)

FYI: I discovered how to get Words of Power locations as quest targets ( ?! +  =  :yesyes: ), so now I've gotten almost a dozen more today.  (Thus bringing my # of "extra" dragon souls down to 11!  )

Also, I spent a half dozen trips back and forth totting the huge haul of Dwemer booty from various spelunking (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/spelunking) around Markath to my house in Whiterun, too....  ::)  :-X

And last of all, check this out!: This guy hooked Skyrim on his PC up and plays via his Kinect device! (http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/Z83wzJwrBK0?rel=0)  It doesn't look like it has the sensitivity to get very good aim with the bows, though....

Well the patch seems to be working in my favour so far, as running a core 2 duo processor. Before the patch whenever i travelled out into Skyrim, going over a brow or through a detailed area the game would lock up for a few seconds, even on lowest graphics settings. Doesn't seem to now, if anything i just get low frame rate for a few seconds.

Im a married level 21 Nord now. Close combat and ranged combat is fine, takes roughly 4 strikes/arrows on most enemies, health regeneration and plentiful potions of healing keeps me alive during more difficult battles. But I am on easy difficulty lol. I might notch it up to normal and up the challenge, but there are times even on easy some quests are a good challenge. I usually sell ingredients, potions and forged items to make money while i continue to level up my perks. I imagine what I sell will start to change soon though as Im about to get into enchanting my weapons and armour and such. I think, ive sided with the legion, based only on the fact that ive committed crimes accidentally in Riften where the Thieves guild is. xD

Interested in starting a new character on a higher difficulty already though to see what the difference in game play is like.

Loving the auto run/walk feature giving me a free hand. Best thing since sliced bread hehe.

I shot a bunny with an arrow while on the run! I rock...

Dragonrend and a high-damage 2-handed enchanted sword kills dragons in no time. Ive got umpteen dragon souls and none of my magic needs upgrading with them.... maybe that will change in time as I get more quests done and find more spells and stuff like that.

Ive had it a couple of times with the horses LowK. I find myself not using them as much now.

Dewmer metal i thought was pointlessly heavy too. Ill grab it if/when i need it in a quest later on by which time levelling up ill have more carry space anyway.

5 kg carry space per level is cruel though... every time.

I saved my saves (heh), completely uninstalled the game (and made sure the stuff in the My Games folder was gone too) then re-installed (put my saves back) and my lag problems went away.

Seems that you cannot undo some of the changes that you can make manually (in the options menu) and are better off leaving things the way their installer extracts from your graphics device....  (However, I think if you make only small adjustments to the view ranges that's okey...?)

On another note, I just went into my Active Effects to assure that something I did was there, and noticed that I had contracted Witbane (Majika generation -50%!) - I think from a Sabre-toothed Tiger that jumped me earlier.  A Cure Disease potion did the trick, but I think it also taught me to listen to this one guy I run into a lot when I'm around my house in Whiterun (Breezehome.) He sometimes says to me as I pass him by "You look pale." !!!  :o

The game keeps amazing me yet!

P.S. But how can he see my face under that Legendary Krosis mask?!?  :siderofl:

I have tried re-installing the game. That did not work. And my computer was actually formated yesterday and Skyrim installed anew today. Not much on it now but Skyrim, Warcraft III, Halo and free space. I copied over just the one save file plus the auto and quick saves from an external harddisk after the Skyrim folder under My Games was recreated.
Changing any graphics settings from the highest down to the lowest does not seem to make any difference.

I walk from Breezehome and pass the Whiterun city gates, walk down the path leading down to the stables. When I am to choose weather to take a right or left turn, I am greeted by the Lag.

Um, that was my point: Changing the graphics settings AT ALL IS WHAT CAUSED LAG FOR ME.

Once you've changed them, no amount of fidgeting with them will correct the lag, hence the re-install.... (I went through it three times to be sure that was the problem for me, BTW....)

Just making sure you did nothing with it and tried playing it at least once before making any changes....

Just played for 8 hours in one sitting (literally).  I just got so much done I can't even remember most of it...

Unfortunately, I still cannot play Skyrim because of the heavy lag. It seems to take just below a minute for it to initiate. Before that, everything is running perfectly.

Sorry. Yes, I have tried playing without changing anything after re-installing. Both times.

Wow.  Majorly-odd bug I've got now:

Whenever I try to talk to the NPC Leigelf in Dawnstar the game instantly crashes on me....  :bang:

...And Hevnoraak in the Valthume Barrow (quest: "Evil In Waiting") was the toughest major NPC I've encountered! (Man can he dodge!)  Sweet Dragon Priest mask (also named Hevnoraak) tho! (Immune to diseases and poisons*!)

* Except Falmer and Chaurus tho...  ::)

Ya, I'm in a bit of a slump too....  I worked so hard to clean up my masses of open quests, and now that I've thinned it out it's started to seem like "work" a bit....

But that won't stop me!

Anyway, I finally put Fraps on this system and have been taking some videos and screenies!

I'll get around to posting some of the videos in a while, but for now, here's a couple of screen shots I enjoyed, and think you will too!:

I agree with your dungeon complaint, Lowkey.  I feel, with as much creativity that went into the recent Fallout games, Bethesda could have made MUCH more original dungeons.  The standard format is okay sometimes, but their team has more than the necessary amount of creativity to formulate a lot of original ideas for dungeons.

(Plus, on my Wood Elf, kiting the end boss is WAY too easy in the linear style dungeons.  They go so long that I can just outrun the boss and get far enough away from him to /wait an hour and get all my magicka and health back.)

You have to hold it down for a bit. I did the same thing when I was playing with it. And the more words you get for a word of power sequence the longer you have to hold it down (but becomes more powerful).

ROFL!

Reminds me of a story...:

I was at a party this one time, and several of us were standing there chatting when another (new) friend joined us and said "Wow. No matter what I do I can't seem to get my new live-in friend's car to go.  Anyone got any ideas?"

Each in turn threw out things such as: "Did you let it warm up?", "When's that last time it had a tune up?", "Can you get it into gear?", and "What sort of sound does it make?"...

To the last question the wanna-be driver answered: "No sound at all."

So I asked them: "Is there gas in the car, and do you have the keys?"

To which they replied: "I don't know. Why? Does that matter?"

 :siderofl:

P.S. 'Never happened, of course, but like all stories, they're better when told in the first person!

On a more realistic note: You Would Be Amazed at the number of times I've gone to help someone with a computer that "won't run" and when I get there I find the 0/1 rocker switch on the PSU is in the OFF position....  ::)

Can be summed up by IT Crowd

"Have you tried turning it on and off again?

and then of course

"Is it plugged in"?

Anyway.... back to Skyrim!

I haven't played it for a few days.... might go back and slay a few dragons :D

Yikes.

I finally had to cave and join a faction/guild/organization, which I've been putting off for a long time. (I've got each and every one of them at the laaast possible stage before it commits me and flags me as a member of something....)

Surprise! I'm a Thief! (However I intend to eventually be a member in ALL such groups in Skyrim, BTW. Next will be The Dark Brotherhood so I can train in Alchemy.)

I had to do it because I needed their higher-level Trainers to get that last bump to 100 for my Sneak and Archery, which I've now done! (Lock-picking(92) and Pick-pocketing(78) are coming along nicely, as well...)

I wanted to find out from others, tho: Was the Thieves Guild/Nocturnal/Nightingales quest line as long for you too? It just seemed to go on and on.  I'm on the part to return the Skeleton Key now and it's kinda getting tedious.  :-\

And while the Nightingale's outfits are cool looking (see below), I find that I've set it aside for the stuff that I was already wearing. (To whit: I find it "more stealthy" if I can one-shot kill one-by-one from stealth with my bow and its buffs than trying to "sneak" in to a group of Falmers and take them down.  ::) )

I love the Nightingale gear.  I used it for awhile until I got boots that gave 30% easier sneak and gloves that gave 30% bow damage.  I still wear the hood and armor though (which I improved to Flawless because it only cost a Void Salts to upgrade it).
Title: Re: Skyrim (The time is here!)
Post by: BFM_Xtr3me on December 15, 2011, 09:20:28 PM
yes, the first time around, the thieves guild was very hard mainly because I didn't have the dark brother hood boots that give you Move silently (same effect as the nightingale boots).
btw, to become guildmaster, you have to do enough quests from Delvin and Vex to get special quests from each city (Winterhold, Whiterun, Solitude and Markarth) and if you find it tedious doing master ranked locks like i do, i kept the skeleton key to do the four.

Lock-pick skill level 48.
Chest Level: Master
Lockpicks: 1

That was a lot of quicksave/quickloading.

I have yet to BUY a lock pick.  ::)

I kill so many things I get more than I use up! ('Most I've ever used on a Master lock was ~12, I think?)

I'm carrying 225 of them right now....

What character type are you, Exodus, "Fumble-Finger?"

I chose Thief from the get-go because I know how overpowered Elder Scrolls "Sneak" has always been!  (It was my second skill to make it to 100, after Smithing.  ;D )

...And WHY did I get my Smithing up so early on? With my Smithing buffs I was able to make most of my items either "Epic" or "Legendary" from the get-go that way!  (FYI: You need a Smithing skill level of at least 91 to make Legendary items.)  So my Legendary Ebony - soon to be replaced by a Glass - bow does 168 damage per strike, x2 for sneak attack!  (Sneak applies as long as the target can't find/see you, so if you duck into hiding after each shot, it counts as x2 AGAIN when you pop out and hit them again.  However I'm pretty sure - from my experience - that Dragons can see you regardless of your sneak ability!   Ditto anything with Detect Life ability.)

Note that this is all independent of your character level, except that you won't get/find things like Glass weapons as drops until you're at a high-enough level for that to start, but you CAN get them from quests.  :siren:

On a totally different note: I've wondered about how much the travel time differed when bopping about Skyrim.  I finally did the study:

Whiterun -> Markarth, departure time 9:00am via:

ModeArrival Time
Fast Travel (Foot)10:20 pm
Fast Travel (Horse)10:18 pm
Hired Carriage10:14 pm

'Guess I'll save my 20 gold pieces from now on!

LOL!

My lockpick level should read 38. This was very early on in the game. I have also never purchased a lockpick... I was going through a draugr-filled dungeon and none of them were dropping any lockpicks, nor was I finding any. At this stage I had never had more than around 30 lockpicks at one time (I was only a few levels up). I had opened 2 master chests and 3 expert chests already... so doing all of that with 30 picks was not all that bad (especially when you add in the lower level ones as well which can easily steal a lockpick!)

Now I have over 400 lockpicks. I have never wasted points on getting the perks... can usually get the master chests on 5 attempts with a quick trigger finger.

As for my character type I have been playing a one-handed fighter that uses a shield. The most apt description is probably "mushroom picker" because when I wander through the dungeons you will see me picking up alchemy items off the ground as I fight enemies. :D

I buy lock picks for no reason.I'm only like level 6 and have about $20,000, aka, kill and steal everything, don't do quests.
Lock picking is only about 20, yet most picks I've used on a master is about 4, and I've picked 10+ masters. Natural talent? :P

Also, I've gotten Blacksmithing, Pickpocketing, Lockpicking, and Restoration to 100.

nice job lucky,
ive only gotten smithing and pickpocketing to 100,
and yes enchanting is annoying, me being me, i sneak everywhere and dont want to use the soul trap spell to give away detection plus i dont carry soul trap weapons (which i should)

atm, sneak is level 80ish, blade is just over 60 same as archery, light armor is about 50 and enchanting is at 40, and im only gonna level restoration to the point i can restore stamina, everything else i will only level to get the perk points

i am also considering starting the game again and this time not doing it on the easiest difficulty lol
Title: Re: Skyrim (The time is here!)

My enchanted 2-handed sword kills dragons with ease, ive more souls than can be used at the moment , and dragon scales and bones are annoyingly heavy! Pit stop to see the Wife at Breezehome after each kill.

Ive got more flawless jewellery than i could possibly sell. I wish I had more book cases in my house... Might just move out of Riften Breezehome soon though anyway. Stormcloaks are on the way to attack Riften and ive also go to capture a dragon at Dragons Reach too so its all gonna royally kick off there soon.

The quests are still multiplying almost more than I can keep up and ive been hammering through them.

Thieves guild quests ive put off for a bit. Especially now ive heard how long the whole thing is hehe.

Ive no specifics maxed to 100 yet but smithing is nearly there at 85, all combat forms and blocking is on the increase more than others due to the relevant stone activated. and everything else is at about half way or just under. Just wished you got more than 1 perk upgrade per level up.

I have to repeat how much this game was definitely worth the money.

Im with Extreme, next time i start the game from the beginning ima try jumping up a couple of difficulties.

Heck you can even change it IN THE MIDST OF BATTLE!  (FYI: I'm on Expert.  Master was too much "Fight Club" for me!   )

I have SOOOO MANY FILLED SOUL GEMS it's CRAZY!

One of the two bows that I carry has a 7-second soul trap built-in. If I need the power of the better one to bring down a NecroMage or something, I usually switch to my "Soul Reaper" bow for the last shot to also grab their soul.  :muah:

I'm sure I have over a hundred filled soul gems, maybe 200....

Just hit level 30 yesterday.  Shifted over from a 2-handed sword to 2 1-handeds. (2 max smithed and enchanted Nord swords that set ppl on fire) which are really good but Ive also picked up an ebony bow and an ebony 2-handed sword lately which are even more powerful than my currents without being upgraded yet.

The Sanguine Rose and the Wabbajack have both gotten me out of a few sticky situations! Nothing more relieving than turning that troll into a chicken at the last minute.

Killed Alduin. I had been going through the game up until that point thinking that killing him was going to be the ending of the main story line or something, but obviously not... good.

How stuck into the game I got? I completely missed the in-game settings window... Ima try upping the difficulty then! Thanks.

There's actually a BENEFIT to using your shout in/near towns now and then!: (Often) a courier will later bring you a message about it, and the message contains information about an as-yet-undiscovered Word location! (Note: You won't get another notice until/unless you've gotten your currently-outstanding word-wall notice, so don't think you can "stack them up" and then go get them all!   )

On another note:

Skyrim just now completely bummed me out / dissappointed me to the max  :'( :

You can't get the final / one of the Words of Power UNLESS YOU JOIN ONE OF THE TWO FACTIONS and start the war!*

I had intended to put that decision/commitment off forever, enjoying the freedom of movement between the two, but the authors apparently consider the war to be a major part of the game's plot, I guess.

::)        :'(        :bang:      :siren:       :sigh:       :roll eyes:      :doom:     :argh:     :zombie:

(FYI: I joined the Stormcloaks.  Why? Because so many of the Jarls were corrupt....  ::) )

Now I've got to look forward to getting attacked every time I visit an Imperial-held city....  :-X

On the up side, tho: I've now gotten all the Words of Power and hence all the Shouts!**  :yesyes:

* FYI: That one "locked away" Word Wall is one of the words for the "Slow Time" shout, and is located within Korvanjund.  This location's entrances are blocked by rubble until you takes sides in the civil war. Note: You have to access that site via the quest "The Jagged Crown."

** ...And I still have 12 left-over dragon souls!?!  ::)  :LOL:

On YA note: Can Shadowmere DIE?!?  I mean, this horse is basically another follower!  The thing attacks and kills things about as well as my Housecarl(s)!

Also, I think there's a very strange bug in here, too, and I think it might have started when I chose sides in the war: Lydia and Shadowmere now attack EACH OTHER whenever a fight anywhere nearby breaks out.  Great.

just like to mention I was never attacked when I was a Stormcloak in Solitude or an Imperial in Windhelm.

about my weapons, I carry an Elven bow, 2 1-handed swords (the strongest ones i find) and Mehrunes Razor which is definitely my favourite weapon in the game

about shadowmere, people have said she can die though it requires very overpowered attacks (unless some sort of glitch is involved). Also watch out, during my second run of the game, the game glitched so shadowmere never spawned *sigh* (though apparently there is a fix)

Yeah, I haven't actually tested out the "attacking me on sight" thing, I just assumed, what with me slaughtering all those Imperial dudes*....  ::)

Your post prompted me to investigate:

"- Shadowmere has more health than other horses in Skyrim and the ability to regenerate health extremely quickly. [...]

- Shadowmere can and will defeat most lower-level to mid-level enemies, but is vulnerable to attacks by hard-hitting foes (such as Snow Bears).

- If Shadowmere attacks a dragon, the dragon's soul may no longer be absorbable, resulting in the dragon's body just lying there without becoming bones.

- When completing the subquest to gain Shadowmere, having a purchased horse with you can cause Shadowmere not to appear. [PC workaround omitted.]

- Unlike the Shadowmere present in Oblivion, this version of Shadowmere is not Essential and can die. However, 15-20 days later, Shadowmere will respawn in the location of death."

* Yaaa... If I use my double-heal spell (both hands) I can stand amid pretty-much any oncoming crowd and then a short pause to do a Flame Cloak spell every now & then usually clears out just about anything around me, eventually! (Oh, and my Majika and Destruction are high enough that I've never even gone below 1/2 Majika yet doing that....)  ::)

I used to find all the arrow knee jokes funny. But then I took an arrow to the knee.

Ey, has anyone sided with the imperial, attacked the Stormcloaks and at the end of it killed Ulfric?  And THEN gone upstairs in his castle?  Theres like 20 odd people all stuffed in one bedroom! What is that!

I released my fire thu'um(?) by mistake in there too... Joy. Runnin out of the castle at full pelt with a random load of firey Windhelmers slicing at my back was not my plan.

Now turns out theres a huge bunch of main and side quests i cant complete anymore... Restarted the game on a higher difficulty.

Goodness I hate it when there's a dragon flying around above me and I'm shooting and shouting at it like crazy, then it just flies off!
Anyone got any helpful tips regarding attracting the attention of a dragon?

Goodness I hate it when there's a dragon flying around above me and I'm shooting and shouting at it like crazy, then it just flies off!
Anyone got any helpful tips regarding attracting the attention of a dragon?

A couple of things:

- If the dragon is also battling something else nearby - say a pair of trolls - it will be more focused on them than you, and when they're dead or the dragon gets bored it will leave.  (I.e. The dragon never really cared about you anyway!   )  You can tell that this is happening because the dragon never hovers or lands really close to you or facing you for very long.

- Some seem to need to be back at their mountain peaks, it seems, and will break off attack and head up there if they get any chance (after being wounded.) It's likely that that dragon may be part of another quest - like one of the Dragon Priests.  So until you've killed all of them and their dragons, you may run into that problem.

- Dragonrend is your friend!  Get this shout ASAP!  Once you've pinned a dragon down on the ground he's all yours! (Be sure to REPEAT the shout after every third or so attack you make on the downed dragon, too) Note: Hitting a dragon (with the shout) that is flying a fair distance away will not always ground them, but  it WILL get their attention - if they can see/find you, so....

- DON'T HIDE FROM THEM! (until they've landed or start hovering, that is!) Get some place that's fairly open. (That will help you to dodge his attacks, too.) A large field with a few trees or rock outcroppings is perfect.

- Don't sneak! / No inviso'! - at least until you've got him locked in.

And one bit of advice for when you DO have him downed: Hide behind something! Move out and cast/shoot him and then duck back instantly and recharge/reload, then repeat.

GL!

Note: It seems that all dragons are males....  ::)  I wonder how they ever reproduced?!?!

Now that I have completed the main story line, I think I am going to make my second character to go and do everything in the game. Some do it with their first, but I do it with my second, because I usually do something wrong, or something that changes the way the game is played (like choosing Stormcloaks or Imperialists).

First time through I played as a stealth Nord archer. It was pretty cool sneaking around shooting monsters/undead/people and they go to investigate and never see me. I had them come right in front of me (took a couple steps back) and they dont see me. :clint: I did the Dark Brotherhood line (makes sense with a stealth toon) and most of The Companions and Mage Guild. Didn't do Thieves Guild, oddly enough.

For my second character, I dont know if I want to go Mage or Warrior ... thoughts?

Dual Wield one of the elements and take the stagger perk... congratulations you are now practically invincible to creatures in melee.

I found magic is a lot of fun although because of the way it is set up there is not a lot of variety to the spells which I thought was half the adventure. I guess hacking at stuff with a sword isn't exactly variety though. Magic is cool :)

Lol, I haven't specialised at all! I use a bit of anything, swords, bows, magic etc, whenever it suits me :D

Well I just got it today, and I played four hours straight  This game is absolutely amazing. I haven't specialized either (not on purpose anyway), but I guess I have as I haven't really used magic at all yet. I do want to become a mage/archer though. I really like the sound of that. I haven't taken a look at the Level up bar either yet. I am super excited to play again, but I think I am going to load a save from earlier in the game so I can kind of restart. I went off randomly and got completely lost, and so know I have no where to start.

I watched a Let's Play episode, and now I have a general idea of where to go :)

OK, so I have just discovered the awesomeness of magic :D I usually go roaming now with a Flame in my left hand and an Iron sword or battleaxe in my right :D  I WUV SKYRIM!!! BEST GAME EVER!

Edit: I also need a bit of help with lock picking, I can only do novice or w/e it's called, but I have done one Expert. The thing is, I am not quite sure how to do it? Do i need to find the right spot with the pick and the just press a? Or do I need to find a few different spots and loosen them up?

with lockpicking, you just got to find the right spot, i just tap it to the left or right in a couple of random places until it moves then you know where to be aiming for ;D
