Ok for any new players the first and most tip I can offer is that upgrade everything Max before doing your Townhall? why? Because if I upgrade my town hall from Level 4 to 5 and I haven't upgraded my defences up to scratch,all those players that are town hall 5 will have a very easy time raiding me and I'll have a hard time attacking. It does require some patience but in the long run it will benefit you come townhalls 7-9.
