Title: Anyone know of any good free MMOGs?
Post by: BFM_Hydra on March 16, 2008, 12:46:43 AM
Hey guys. Anyone here play any good text-based MMOGs? I've played a few in the past and am looking for a new one to play if I find them time. Any ideas would be appreciated :o)

Ancient City kinda building game (http://ikariam.org/)

Text based racing game (http://s3.metaldamage.com/c.php?uid=43124)

Uhm, dunno what the games called IRL, but its when you draw something, and others have to guess what it is, yeah, that thing (http://isketch.net)

First 2 are like actual games, where it's saved and you carry on, the last 1 is just a fun little game.

I play them when nothing else to do  :)

Hey VxT, Ikariam looks like exactly what I want! I'll see how I go with it. Hopefully I won't gget bored straight away like I do with others (Hence I'm asking other people's opinions...).

Thanks mate!

I've heard that Guild Wars is free (other than buying the disk)
And Runescape has a free version, But if your a more "intense" gamer, you probly wont like RS

For Guild Wars there is no subscription fee; like Pynk said, you just pay for the disk.
For runescape there is also the option to pay $5 a month to play ad-free and you get a lot more to do.
There are plenty of other free MMOGs out there.  Xfire generally can lead you to one.

I own Guild Wars and have played RuneScape for years (Gave up about a year ago). I didn't like either =/. Thats why I kind of asked for text-based ones - I'm not into RPG.

Not into RPGs....then you your kind of stuck...almost every MMOG is an RPG, unless you consider games like Halo an MMOG

Completely untrue.

Best that I've found so far.

What's an MMOG and a text-based one? I guess I can't look it up. And I won't!

"Massive Multiplayer Online Game"

A text based one is a game that has few graphics and is played via the player reading each individual page. It can also include games with embedded graphics -such as Ikariam or Travian. Games that are played in real-time and have controlled players moving in an online world etc. are not text based.

Yeah, old thread, so MMOG me to death!  Hydra, are you claiming that online real-time text based MMOGs like the original MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons/Dimensions) aren't considered text based games?  Come on ya ol' bird fess up and make that claim stick!  ALL of the original online games were text based until color graphics became the thing and LAN play then WAN/inet play left them in the dust.  My favorite MUD was BatMUD from over in Finland, and I think they are still online with even a web-based version with pretty graphics and flashy ASCII text from whatever their newest website is.   :clint:
