about ps3

If I am putting these questions in the wrong forum forgive me please. Well, I have the ps2  console and I have some games so I have some doubts about the ps3:
1. The ps3 console runs ps2 games?
2. Is the ps3 console better than xbox360? or both are good?
In Brazil, where I live, the ps3 console is expensive yet but my interest about the ps3 is because I have the ps2 and I wouldn't like to lose these old games - God of War 1 and 2, Socom, Black, Winning Eleven, Resident Evil 4 and others - as well.
