Title: The New Riddle Game
Post by: A41~Møbiu§ on July 19, 2007, 12:05:36 AM

Okay.

First riddle:

What was the Riddle Thread's last riddle in the previous BFM forum?

 :-/

 ;D

Okay, if you don't have the answer to THAT one, try this one:

What is the only question You could never answer yes to?

Here are "rules" ("'More like guidelines, actually!"  ;) ) for this thread:

* Only the poster correctly answering the previous riddle and posting that answer first is to post a new riddle. Please do not jump in with a new riddle and break the chain....

* After 2 days w/o solution the poster should post either (a) hint(s) or the solution & a new riddle. (Their choice.) After 5 days without solution, just give us the answer & a new one, please!

* Please do not post Lateral Thinking Puzzles (aka Situation Puzzles!) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Situation_puzzle) They usually lack enough information to be a true "riddle" with a definitive answer, and result in players asking all kinds of questions ... as LTPs are MEANT to be!

* Looking up the answers on the 'Web is verboten (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/verboten), however FINDING riddles to post in the thread from the 'Web is perfectly acceptable.

* This thread is a study in riddles in and of itself! If you're new to it, practice patience and test your brain by reading through the whole thing, stopping at each/many of the riddles, solve them yourself and then check your answer! Don't just read through them all - or worse! - skip over the excellent collection of riddles entirely!

TY & don't hurt your brain!

Sorry (and thanks for not nagging me too badly, jim ;D)! Here goes:

 When sunny and light
 I'll give you a fright
 Unless I'm just passing by...
 But when friends draw near
 Heaven's no longer clear
And all at once, we'll cry.

Still doesn't sound quite right, but meh. Good luck. :)

Thanks JANE! :D I've only recently started paying any attention to the riddle thread, so I thought I better not get one from Google incase it'd been done before.

Part of the "rules" of the riddle game are that you have to have got the last one correct in order to go. Having said that, I'm sure that while we're waiting for Mxy to post, they'll be people happy to have a crack at your riddle.

so in essence (if im understanding right) you should only post a riddle if you are the one who answered the previous riddle?

Indeed that was an excellent job, Hlao!

(It came to me on first reading, but I had to go through it two more times to be sure it fit!)

Okay, I'm making this one up on-the-spot!:

When from a bird, it's full of pain
But from another is pain's bane
Tasting sweet upon one's lips,
or launch a thousand ships
Steal one unwanted quickly
then catch one back right briskly!

What am I?

A kiss?
Title: Re: The New Riddle Game
Post by: jim360 on March 16, 2010, 11:04:21 AM
THe only thing I can think of is "face" as in "face that launched a thousand ships" (belonging to Helen of Troy).
Title: Re: The New Riddle Game
Post by: BFM_Kiwi on March 16, 2010, 11:46:56 AM
I think Hlao is right.  A kiss fits with a lot of the clues. Not sure what the bird thing is about though.

Was this the face that launch'd a thousand ships
And burnt the topless towers of Ilium?
Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss

Anyway, I could never make up a riddle like that, so I'm in awe of Hlao and Mxy for doing it.

Title: Re: The New Riddle Game
Post by: BFM_Hlao on March 16, 2010, 12:28:53 PM
I found that poem after some brief Googling. :D

I think the bird thing might be a peck. "Pain's bane" had me stumped for a while... but it could be a healing kiss / kiss of life.
Title: Re: The New Riddle Game
Post by: MrMxyzptlk on March 18, 2010, 11:43:27 AM

Hlao got it right off!  :yesyes: GJ!

Yes, each pair of lines described different words for "a kiss" as follows:

When from a bird, it's full of pain
But from another is pain's bane

A "peck!"

Tasting sweet upon one's lips,
or launch a thousand ships

A kiss!

Steal one unwanted quickly
then catch one back right briskly!

A "smack!"

Yur up, Hlao!

A man is carrying a 20kg barrel,
he puts something in it and it weighs less than 20kg,
what did he put in the barrel??
Title: Re: The New Riddle Game
Post by: Old Z on August 29, 2010, 10:48:41 AM
Anything that weighs less than 20kg was put in the barrel. A feather, a pencil... could have been anything.

'he put something in it and it weighs less than 20kg' <---this sentence could refer to 'it' as the barrel OR the item being placed within it.

Unless you meant to say, 'he put something in it and [the barrel] weighs less than 20kg?

~Z

EDIT: if you were looking for an item that will make it weigh less, then, since weight is relative to gravitational pull, he could put a helium baloon or other artefact that rises to counteract the weight of the barrel.

this is more of a brain teaser than a riddle but lets see if you can do it (some of you may have done it before :P)

This is a most unusual paragraph - and so is its companion paragraph that follows. This writing may annoy you until you find out why it is so unusual, for you won't find a solution instantly. But don't go into a tailspin about it, for it isn't that difficult. But you will admit that it is most unusual. This writing looks so ordinary that you might think that nothing is worng with it. And, in fact, nothing is wrong with it. But it is unusual, and you must ask why. If you study and think about it, you may find out why, but you must do it without any coaching of any kind. No doubt if you work at it for long, it will dawn on you...who knows? So start to study it now, and try your skill at finding out what is so unusual about this writing.

If you are able to understand this riddle, congratulations! You may be completely stumped by what seems to be a long paragraph that drones on for ever and ever. Can you see what is going on? Go away and ponder it for a while, next time you have a free moment. Think carefully, of all the possible things that may be happening - a good trick is to stare at all the words in this paragraph until you spot the hidden meaning. New ideas may well pop into your head all the time, one more crazy than the others. But one idea will be the right one - don't be discouraged if you take a while to get it! Be creative when you are going over the possible meanings in your head; too many people take one look at this and give up because they spent much, much less time than they could have. Longer times than a minute are necessary of course!

Well then, off you go!

And exactly WHAT sensible algorithm determines that word selection, pray tell??  :toughguy:

So I can pull hundreds of "sensible answers" out of that text by choosing random words from within that ordering and have been just as "right," right?

E.g.

Go away, think carefully, stare at one more crazy than the others. don't take the possible meanings, take one look at this and give up.

you may have heard this one already but oh wellz ;p.

Four men sat down to play,
They played all night 'till break of day.
They played for gold and not for fun
With separate scores for everyone.
When they came to square accounts,
They all had made quite fair amounts.
Can you the paradox explain,
If no one lost, how could all gain?
