Title: $$ How much speed do I need to pay for?
Post by: TEX'N on October 11, 2009, 12:24:02 PM
Well, I've always wanted the fastest connection I could have just in case it might change my gaming experience.  I don't really do a lot of movie or music downloading, just some intense online gaming like Everquest, City of heroes, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Champions Online, etc...  I don't want a slow speed to be the cause of my lagging.

The wife wants to change our Cable/Phone/Internet package to AT&T for possible better cable and cheaper, but I keep saying "No" because of the internet speed.  I've always paid Cox for the highest possible connection over fiber which doubles DSL, but am I overpaying for more speed than I actually need?

Gaming use practically nothing in terms of bandwidth. Halo is probably one of the biggest bandwidth users in gaming, however that is still only 5-6Kb/s upload and download.

As long as you dont have dial up speeds I think you will be right.

The main uses of bandwidth in most households is when people use youtube, facebook etc. This is the real cause of lag or when someone is downloading something,

You can buy routers which have throttling, such as the billion series routers. This means you can slow the download speed to a certain IP address to prevent them from hogging the bandwidth.

So yeah get what you want. If your just gaming you dont need insane speeds because games doesnt use that much at all.
