Title: Music from iPod to iTunes.
Post by: Igor on October 12, 2007, 10:06:09 AM
You know it happens, you lose everything on your computer, all that precious music! gone! :'(
or is it?!!!!  :o
I just found a way to get the hidden music files off of an ipod and get them into a blank itunes!
Ok step one= Connect you iPod full of music into your pc.
If your itunes opens and says something like, sync ipod to this itunes...etc.. leave it alone dont click anything. (come back to this later)
Ok so now to the music> Start>>My computer>>Click on your iPod= you should see 4 folders, like calender and some other stuff but no music?!Gasp!
Click Tools > folder options > 'click the "view" tab'>> then scroll down and check the box that says 'show hidden files and folders'
For some reason iPod's don't let you see this, probably hoping you'll go back to itunes and buy it all again....
Ok, so now you'll have acess to a folder called iPod_control Click it, then go to music then you'll have some folder names FF0 FF1 etc....Open them and there's your music, now simply copy paste into a new folder and load that folder onto itunes. Your music is saved now you can re-sync your iPod
I know im a genius  d_b Enjoy!

PS. For some reason if you cancel and close the iTunes and that message about syncing it doesn't show up in my computer (for me at least)

I think I just went colorblind.... :ninja:

Oh and btw, if you go this route, Itunes will MOST LIKELY not be able to get your track info back. If they are MP3's then you can run them though WMP to get new names, but still, it's a pain sometimes. I know Itunes will just reload all the QEUF and QOUR and FFNG files just as they are back into the Ipod, makes it really difficult to find your music again LOL!

Only a select few tunes get the names mucked up, the artists will still be the same, and this can be easily changed. If you get the songs from itunes store this wont change but obv some people use other sources =]

if you have the songs on your iPod then all you have to do is connect it to the comp. and it automatically transfers it.

Yeah but i'm guessing this means you could use your iPod on someones elses computer who doesnt have all your music...

I could very well be Enigma's friend... That happened to me!  I was afraid to plug my iPod into the computer because I thought it would clear out the iPod. I'm still kinda hesitant but I feel more daring with this new info. Thanks so much Igor!

FYI, for Mac users, there is a program called Senuti (http://www.fadingred.org/senuti/) that will look at the files on your iPod, as well as look at the iTunes database on the iPod, and show you all the names of the songs, artist, etc.  Then you just click on the file you want, and click on Copy, and it saves it to your computer.

Sorry, it only works for Macintosh.  :)

Most people don't get all their music from the iTunes Music Store, but just so you know, if the music in question was bought on the iTunes Music Store, iTunes will ask you if you want to move it from the iPod to iTunes.

That's true. Anything you buy off iTunes, you'll have the option to transfer it to the computer without any sneakiness at all. I got my iPod games and videos transferred just by pressing OK. And out of 2300 songs, only one (count 'em, one!) song title was messed up. I was more than happy to edit it. ;D

Again Igor is a life...er, iPod saver!

PFF. Hasn't anyone here ever heard of ********?  :cop:

Yes, but lately several ******** users downloading music have been the targets of some HUGE fines levied by the RIAA - and charged with crimes as well....

Note: ******** is ESPECIALLY bad legality-wise in that it auto-shares out what you download (ala bittorrent.) Hence not only can they charge you with Copyright violations, but they sock you with CONSPIRACY and DISTRIBUTION as well.  One recent case a Bay Area woman who downloaded 22 songs illegally is facing $220,000(US) in fines and possible jail time (for the conspiracy charges.)  :o

Do not download illegal copies!

What you choose to use it up to you, but it is illegal, and is dangerous for your computer, i, and two of my friends have lost PC's because of it. R.I.P :'(
There are sad little people that make up nasty bugs and viruses, and pose them as songs, so when you download it, it spreads and infects and destroys the world!/you pc.

I'll need more detail than that, like how many folders are there that you see, and is there anything in them? Can you open them? etc...
Title: Re: Music from iPod to iTunes.
Post by: snowkiller on May 16, 2008, 05:42:59 PM
theres five folders with music in them and the folder is like timed so i have like 30 sec. to get the folders and for some reason my itunes thinks that my ipod doesnt go with the itunes. (i got a new comp.) yes i can open them too and i do seee the music in them but like i said it closes by its self afer 30 sec.
Title: Re: Music from iPod to iTunes.
Post by: Igor on May 17, 2008, 12:56:37 AM
Wow.
Try to do it quicker? You can drag the blue selecty-box (technical term) over all of them and try drag 'em out, I really have no idea why its timed like that.
Good thing to know is that the music is there, now you need to beat the clock :P

use a program called xplay avalible at
http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/
it makes ur ipod like a normal mp3 player so u can drag on drop file to and from the ipod. IMO its so much better than itunes.

I would be very careful with trading programs like ********.  The RIAA has recently stepped up and is handing fines out to people who have illegal copies of music.  Buying the music (via iTunes, CDs, Amazon, etc.) is okay and very legit, it's when you trade it to other people that it becomes illegal.  You can be fined up to $100 per song, and the average out-of-court settlement (before it gets to court) is around $3-4k.  Already 5 people at my university have been fined.

My university has a contract with Ruckus, which is a free-download music company.  What makes it safe is that the music is downloaded in a filetype that only the Ruckus Player can recognize, and is therefore not transferable and near impossible to trade.  This was made as an alternative from ******** so that you don't get busted by the RIAA.

I use a software called iDump. It automatically takes all the music from your iPod, copies them to your computer safely and in an organized manner, and adds all of the songs to your iTunes library as well!

all p2p programs are more hazardous than any thing else
i like to put it this way
a new song = $0
a new game = $0
a new pc = $1000
your old pc = worthless... :)

This talk of illegal downloading programs will stop IMMEDIATELY please...It was ok when it was mentioned and then killed with the posts about it being hazardous but we don't want to bring it up again as the negatives have already been discussed. I have removed the name of the program, as BFM does not condone such illegal behaviour.

Point taken.

But just for reference, that program is not illegal, in fact it is a very legit program.  It is a program that trades files between users, much like email attachments.  It's what people trade that sometimes cause themselves to dig a deep hole.

Wow, this thread... old memories...

*snaps out of nostalgia feeling*

Ahem, anyway. You can also make backups of your music on CD-R disks, if you like doing things old-school that is. I had to transfer 250+ songs from my dads computer (where all my music originally was) to my laptop, where it now resides. Keep in mind that the more music you have the more blank disks you will need. Of the 250+ songs I had I used two CD-R disks.
