Most of you don't know this... but in Hydra's spare time, the time he spends not trolling these forums anyway... he tends to play word games. Not the kind you play on vent that make people, like me, frown and wonder what I possibly did to deserve him as a brother, the kind of word game that 7 little plastic squares and a big board of colours that are supposed to give you extra points for apparently being awesome. Hydra happens to be particularly good at this game, or particularly nubbish, these two tend to go hand in hand with Hydra... and this was recently demonstrated in the AUSTRALIAN SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Before anyone says anything. Thats right. You can play scrabble. Professionally. So all that time I spent playing halo, learning to pwn Americans in their own server and take over the racing world, Hydra was blankly staring at little square tiles and memorizing the names of all these 4 and 5 letter words that nobody, including the people who write the Oxford dictionary, have any idea what the meanings are. Or even then, what the meanings themselves actually mean. Or the meanings of the meanings mean. Seriously you should see these words. Anywho back to my story.

So yes. Hydra plays scrabble. Get a real hobby like sports. Real sports though, not lawn bowls. Anyway so he drove to the next state for Easter to play in this championship. Great idea loser, just take Dad away for the weekend when I go home again! So for a few days he sat at this set of tables and stared at a bunch of boards. He was even lucky enough to have someone sitting with him at the table. Funnily enough they were also staring at the board and had 7 tiles just like Hydra did. He did this for 3 days. I ate chocolate. Much better weekend if you ask me.

So after 3 days of making up words, colour coordinating his plays and scoring an apparent large amount of points in most games... results are in!

Thats right. BFM has the person who came 7th in the Australian Scrabble Chamionships.

In all seriousness he was struggling earlier on and staged a fight to get into the top 10 where he then played the players who came 2nd and 4th. These two were in 2nd and 1st at the time respectively. So maybe he was responsible for knocking them off? Anyway he was beaten by 3 points by the player in 3rd, and lost as he always does (seriously all 8 times they've played) to the person who won who is 3rd ranked in Australia. He beat 5th in his final game and still ended up 7th. Still not a bad effort for the random guy ranked 51 in Australia. Yeah I groaned when I heard that too.

Just call him your 7-headed word crunching head forum moderator. If you talk to much about this he will get a big head, only one big head, and then the others will fight about it.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your support. I've played Scrabble competitively for 6 years now, and this is the best I've done at any major tournament. It's my 2nd Nationals tournament, and I've been to 4 Victorian Championships, the International Sydney Masters once, and also twice I represented Australia at the World Youth Scrabble Championship (2006 and 2007). It's a very stressful and hard-working hobby, and there's a lot of practice that goes into learning words and strategy, and I'm very lucky that my friends and family support me with it and respect how fiercely competitive I am with this game. Other people think I'm crazy...but so what? It's all a bit of fun, and I have a ball!

Victorian Championship is in June - we'll see how I go this time around - I've never gotten higher than 15th there before!

I just about understand the attraction of Scrabble though I don't play it much myself. Having read the scrabble columns in the papers every now and then I know that there is much more to the game than knowing obscure words. Kudos ( ;D ) to you for being able to play it at that level, complete with word power, strategy and goodness knows how much practice you have to put in.

Ya, my family won't play scrabble with me any more, either, Hydro....  ::)  (They gave up the time I played "weir" for triple-word score on a dangling "r" near the end of a game, and one of them challenged me.  I even gave them the definition of it, which they said I "made up!." The dictionary let them know who was making up what! LOSERS! )

'Good to see you doing "something productive" with your non-Halo time, tho!  ;D

...And do NOT hope to take that #1 spot someday! ... Then you'd have nothing to shoot for!  :siderofl:

Congrats Hydra!!! Scrabble gave all bookworms an excuse to drag around multiple volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary.  ;D
