Well Alot of times i go.
Fill the block with what ever colour of paint you want.
You know how to do this.
press Ctrl + A.
Render>
Then pick one.
They all are differnt and are quite cool if you use the bars.
-
I quite often use:
pick the two colours u want, one light 1 dark
filter -> Render -> Clouds
Then I use a distortion effect on it, usually ripple or shear

Thanks heaps you two!!

You can also download brushes off the internet; Google something along the lines of grunge Photoshop brushes. Just search around you'll find some that appeal to you.
-
One last thing is you can use renders called C4D renders which are totally abstract, and with a bit of lighting can make really good backgrounds, as an example:

SMUDGE!!!! Duplicate your render a few times, choose different brushes, change the scattering and such, smudge away. Add a C4D that flows with the render or makes it flow, set it on color or lighten and lower to opacity to make it look good, i might post a PS CS2 tut.

Main tool used is the Brush tool. You can download or make new brushes. You can also use a gradient, which adds flavor to the background.

Hmmm I haven't used a brush in months... maybe I should start again...

But I just find some really cool brushes, for whatever I'm drawing.
