Title: Biweekly Game Giveaway!!!
Post by: BFM_Fuzzy on January 20, 2020, 09:45:07 PM
Howdy gang!

I've decided to run a biweekly game giveaway!

Rules:

Every two weeks, I will post a new game, redeemable via a Steam key that I will PM to the winner. These keys are 100% legit, and purchased by yours truly. There will be a contest to determine the winner, the nature of which may change.

Anyone can enter this contest, whether you are a BFM or a guest on our forums.

For this first giveaway, we'll keep it simple. I've picked a number between 1 and 500. The poster whose guess is the closest to the number wins.

Prize:

The first prize is a copy of Shadow of Mordor, which includes 17 DLC items!

The winner will be announced on February 3rd.

Only three entries in a week? Doesn't anyone else like free games?! :scrim:

Let's get a few more posts in over the next week so this can become a regular thing!

Boredom is the winner, with an exactly correct entry of 117!

Please check your PMs for Shadow of Mordor's Steam key!

For this next two weeks, we'll keep the number guessing game going. I'd like to come up with something a little more intricate, so post here if you have any ideas that would make the contest a little more interesting!

I want to see more people posting, so remember folks: even if you already have the game that's being given away, you can always send the key to a friend!

The prize for the next two weeks is Homeworld: Remastered Collection! Remastered Collection makes Homeworld 1 & 2 compatible with modern systems. It also includes a beautiful graphics update for the original game. If you want to play with the old graphics, the collection also includes legacy copies of both games.

The number I'm thinking of is a decimal number between 0 and 1.

Mil wins, with the closest guess. The correct number was 0.28469.

Your Steam key will arrive shortly, Mil.

For our next prize, we're gonna have a bundle of games available!

Here are the titles:

Stronghold HD
Spintires
Cities: Skylines
STAR WARS Jedi Knight - Jedi Academy
STAR WARS™ Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast

Let other people know about this!

Again we'll do a number guessing game. The correct answer is somewhere between 1001-2002

Milton has won again, with a very close guess of 1824. The correct answer was 1870!

For the next giveaway we're having a blowout on strategy games. The prizes are:

Total War: Napoleon
Total War: Medieval II
Total War: Attila

The retail value of all these games put together is $95.

We'll keep the number game going. This time there won't be a given range. I'll think of a number, and whoever gets closest to it wins.

**NOTE** If these giveaways continue to have such low turnout, I will be discontinuing them in the future. **NOTE**

Also I feel like part of the reason the turnout is so low is because registration is turned off on the forums. I hope to see it continue, because I like having a chance, but if there's no turnout, I understand.

But thank you for giving us a chance!

I just didn't notice this before. I think it is great that you are doing something so nice to breathe life back into the forum. I suggest that those racing this Saturday night tell people about it using in-game chat.

I was thinking about alternatives to the number guessing. Unfortunately, things like riddles can be looked up unless they are original, or they give an extra chance to win to those who see it first, which is not really in the spirit of what you are trying to do. So the best I can come up with is to stick with the number guessing but make it a prediction on some publicly available number. You could stick with random like asking people to predict what the final two digits of the Dow Jones Industrial Average will be on a given day. Or you could give people a chance to actually make a substantive prediction and guess what the whole number will be.

I will let you know if I get any other ideas. Thanks for doing this.

That gives me an idea for a guess.

2885

It represents the 2018 low for the S&P 500 and a major technical support. If the market doesn't bounce from there (thanks to COVID-19), it'll go a lot lower.

That's an excellent suggestion, Mr Do. I'll probably use that (or a slight variation of it) for the next game giveaway.

Also, I second your admonition to let people know during the Saturday races. For anyone who races, please spread the word around. As long as we keep getting a good turnout, I'll continue posting giveaways for the foreseeable future. :)

Boredom is the winner with the closest guess! The correct answer was 9862!

This next week will feature two racing games:

Assetto Corsa
Gas Guzzlers Extreme

Together, they have a retail value of $45.

Thanks to an excellent suggestion by Mr Do (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php?topic=61809.msg457255#msg457255), we're going to change things up for this next giveaway. Entrants will post a two digit number, with the winner being determined by who is closest to the last two numbers of the Dow Jones Industrial Average when the market closes on March 30.

(Note: I would have posted this and sent out the Steam keys yesterday. But I was snowed in with a ton of things to do.)

I was thinking that the day was Friday when the number would be determined and so I checked the Dow. I now see that it is Monday and so we will see what tomorrow brings. But looking at it led me to a question. When I proposed using the last two digits, I didn't realize that they include decimal places in the reporting. Are we going with the decimal places or the last two digits of the whole number? If it had been decimal places and Friday, I would have been dead on with my 78....

The last two digits of the Dow today are 48. Both Mil and Devin's guesses are six points away from the correct number. Since Mil posted first, I've decided to declare him the winner. Congrats Mil! Please check your PMs for the Steam keys you've won.

Henceforth we'll keep guessing the last two numbers of the Dow. If anyone has a suggestion for a different style of contest, feel free to post it in this thread.

The games for the next two weeks are:

Civilization V
Stronghold Crusader 2

The normal retail value of these games together is $70.

Feel free to post an entry even if you already have these games. You can give them away to a friend if you win!

Good luck!

(Sorry for the late post. All the promotion stuff made me forget about the giveaway. :hotsauce: )

The Dow closed on Monday with the last two digits at 77! This means Mr Do is our winner! Congrats!

For the next two weeks, the giveaway prizes are:

8-Bit Armies
Chivalry: Medieval Warfare Complete Pack

8-Bit Armies is something of a return to form for the developers at Petroglyph. Petroglyph consists of many of the old Westwood developers who brought us classic RTS titles like Command & Conquer and Red Alert.

Chivalry: MW is a high-end first-person medieval combat game, in which you can actually hack limbs off other players during combat. The graphics are phenomenal, and the game has an 83% positive rating on Steam.

Together, they have a normal retail value of $50

Good luck!

The Dow closed with the final two digits at 78. That means Mr Tails is our winner! Congratulations!

For the next two weeks, the games being given away are:

Europa Universalis IV
MotoGP 19

Europa Universalis IV (EU IV) is a grand strategy game from Paradox Interactive, a studio known for making obsessively detailed video games. There is a steep learning curve to this game, but it holds an 86% positive rating on Steam, and continues to be a well-liked title nearly seven years after being released. If you like grand strategy, you should give this a shot.

MotoGP 19 is a motorcycle racing game with an 88% positive rating on Steam. IGN Italia calls it “the best motorcycle simulator in years.” Frankly, I kinda want it for myself!

Together, these games have a standard retail value of $80.

The prize this week is a copy of Project CARS 2 - Deluxe Edition, a $90 retail value. This edition includes all of the DLC for the game. The game is well regarded on Steam, with a 77% positive rating.

Remember, you can still post even if you've already won, or you already own the game being given away. What you win is a Steam key that can be saved for later and given to a friend as a gift.

The stock market is closed for Memorial Day, so we'll be going with the closing figures from Friday. The last two digits of the Dow were 16, meaning that Mr Do is our winner, with an extremely close guess of 19! Congratulations Do!

For the next two weeks, we're having a space themed giveaway, featuring:

Homeworld: Remastered Collection
Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion

Together, these games have a retail value of $75.

Homeworld needs little introduction to RTS fans from the late 90s to early 00s. I remember spending many childhood hours playing the first one on a beat up Windows 98 machine we'd bought from a library sale. The updated graphics make an already brilliant RTS gorgeous.

SoaSE: Rebellion is a slower-paced game than some RTS fans may be used to. It's honestly less of a strategy game and more of a resource management simulator. Matches against AI tend to become economic slugging matches, which can be a ton of fun! It's very easy to slide into a 'just 10 more minutes' mentality with this strategy heavyweight.

Make your best guess and post away!
Title: Re: Biweekly Game Giveaway!!!

Well this is awkward...

As a cursory perusal of this thread will show, nobody posted in the last two weeks since the last giveaway. So Sins: Rebellion and Homeworld will have to hang out in my library for a little while.

For the next two weeks, I'm giving away:

Rise of Industry
Total War: Empire - Definitive Edition
Total War: Shogun 2

I'm a big fan of Rise of Industry. It's a lite economics simulator where you have to supply resources to towns. The premise is simply enough, but the logistics are enjoyable and can grow a bit intricate over time as you build your supply empire.

Total war: Empire is another game I like. It tends to be a little easier to get into than some of the other total war titles, in part because of the simpler nature of 18th century warfare versus medieval warfare. It's got a modern feel, but still has much of the classic Total War feel that some of the more recent games have moved away from.

Finally, we have Shogun 2. This title is set in Japan, as the name implies. You start as the leader of a clan, with the goal of unifying Japan under your clan's banner.

Post away!
