if you want a copy pm me for it
also for first time readers
this is a q and a thread for hp
-
Obsessed is such a strong word :P
However, I do like it :)
-
I know all the spells off by heart anyway. :P
-
I have read the books multiple times each, I wouldn't say I'm obsessed but I do love the books.
The movies are great too, but unfortunately they can't fit everything into the movies.
Mugglenet.com :P
-
Gotta agree with sandman here, the movies are great but the books have got alot more information and story.seeing as ive read the books many times each, I know the spells of by heart, but I've probably forgotten a few lol, since theres so many

Turbo, I challenge thee to a HP trivia contest. Whenever you're ready, PM me. Or we could just post questions for each other here...
-
post here lol, do what ever u choose i just wanted to add my 2c and also :noadd:
-
I know one spell >_> That one where he says expecto or something and a huge light comes out.. yeah that's about it.. like the movies though.
-
Turbo, I challenge thee to a HP trivia contest. Whenever you're ready, PM me. Or we could just post questions for each other here...
I wouldn't do that Turbo, the only person who knows more than Marty about the books is JK Rowling.
-

You mean 'Expecto Patronum', the Patronus charm which wards off Dementors and in advanced wizards, can take on the shape of an animal?
(ye, I love HP!!)
-
that be a lot of spells

A trivia contest sounds fun!!! Would it be about spells or could it be everything? ;D
-
"obsessed" is such a strong word... Sure I have all of the books and I've read them all seven or eight times through, but thats because I have nothing better to do with my time.
-
A trivia contest sounds fun!!! Would it be about spells or could it be everything? ;D
if u want u could make a thread for everyone or do it on this
oh not that much spells so far
-
I really like the books, but if it weren't for actors like Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman (and all the others), I'd hate the movies. They're a lot better now that the kids are growing up, but there was just so much missing from them, I don't see how anyone who's not read the books could follow the movies. Yay for the last one being a two-parter, dedicating 5-6 hours to the movie. :P
I would probably not do too well in an HP trivia contest though.
Digression! I couldn't remember Dame Maggie's last name and had to look her up. I've really only ever seen her in Sister Act (in a nun's habit) and Harry Potter (in a high collar and witch hat), and on imdb.com there's a picture of her... She has hair! And a neck! LOL
-
It wasn't until I watched a repeat of Die Hard on FX the other day that I realized Snape and Hans Gruber were the same actor. (Alan Rickman) LOL
-

Well, there kind of is one HERE (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php/topic,42528.15.html) but it never got going. Anyone is free to either restart this thread or to create a new 'Harry Potter Trivia' thread.

Nice answer Tur8o, although it is first referred to as a deluminator in HP7 the deathly hallows.
For the purposes of HP1, it is called a Put-outer
;D
-

i have two questions about the books...
1. What is the name of Neville Longbottom's Parents and which death eater killed them?
2. What is the chant for a Death eater to cast the dark mark?

Antioch, Cadmus, and Ignotus Peverell, Each were the original owners of teh Deathly Hallows.
Anitoch owned the Elder Wand
Cadmus owned the Resurrection Ring
And Ignotus was the owner of the Invisibility cloak

how can there b 2 harty potters
any way heres another question
what r the 3 unforgivable curses and who first mensions them first in the 4th book
-
the cattawailing charm
Caterwauling, so yes.
what r the 3 unforgivable curses and who first mensions them first in the 4th book
The unforgivable curses are first mentioned in the chapter of the same name in The Goblet of Fire. Alastor Moody asks his fourth-year class what they are:
Ron Weasley says the Imperius Curse (Imperio) which forces the victim to obey the caster's wishes and which few people can resist.
Neville Longbottom says the Cruciatus Curse (Crucio) which causes intense pain in its victims. This is the same curse that Neville's parents Frank and Alive had used upon them by Bellatrix Lestrange, driving them insane. Bellatrix also uses the Cruciatus Curse on Neville in the Order of the Phoenix.
Hermione Granger says the Killing Curse, Avada Kedavra. Harry Potter survives being hit with a Killing Curse twice, once as a baby and once when seventeen. Harry is the only person ever to have survived a Killing Curse.
I think I've shown off enough (read: too much) by answering way more than the question asked for.
New question: List the named dead from the Battle of Hogwarts. There are nine named and around 60 unnamed deaths.

Colin Creevy
Remus and Nymphadora Lupin

Yes, I was counting Nagini, and no-one else is explicitly said to be 'dead' and named. And yes, it was Fred, not George - the one with both ears died.
The thing is, we can assume that out of all the Death Eaters and MoM members fighting against Harry & Co, some of them must have died, but they're not named. And then there are "50 others who died fighting against [Voldemort]", but they are also not named.

Answer Below (Highlight)
-----------------------------------------------
Galleons, Sickles and Knuts.
seventeen Sickles to a Galleon, twenty nine Knuts to a Sickle.
493 Knuts --> 17 Sickles --> 1 Galleon
-------------------------------------------------
-
I couldn't quite remember the conversion rate, I settled on 29 Knuts =1 Sickle but that 13 Sickles =1 Galleon. So I couldn't quite remember the Sickle-Galleon conversion. Piffle.
According, to JKR, the Wizarding-Muggle conversion (around 5th Dec 2010) was as follows:
1 Galleon = £5 (GBP) = $7.35 (USD) = €5.9 (EUR) = $7.96 (AUD)

In facts, let's go the full hog:
Give every Hogwarts teacher's full name, only including the seven years covered by the books (so Dumbledore doesn't count as having taught Transfiguration, and Neville doesn't teach Herbology). Just so's you know, not all of them have their full names mentioned in either books or films - for example, neither books nor films ever mentions the name of the Professor of Ancient Runes. Here are all the subjects you need to name the teachers of:
Headmaster #1
Headmaster #2
Headmaster #3
Headmaster #4
Arithmancy
Astronomy
Apparition
Care of Magical Creatures #1
Care of Magical Creatures #2

"Defence Against the Dark Arts #6 - (trick question?) Dumbledore? Not a trick question. Dumbledore taught Transfiguration before being Headmaster."
I was thinking Dumbledore would have been considered the year 6 (or whatever) teacher for DADA since he gave Harry the private lessons in the sixth or fifth year. But I supposed there would be a regular teacher for the rest. :P
Thanks for all the answers Marty, lots of "oh duh, I knew that" moments reading through it!

And Ginny Weasly to that list. Would you count Dean Thomas as a chaser?
I would - which brings us to:
Seeker#1 - Harry Potter
Seeker#2 - Ginny Weasley
Beater#1 - Fred Weasley
Beater#2 - George Weasely
Beater#3 - Jack Sloper
Beater#4 - Andrew Kirke
Beater#5 - Jimmy Peakes
Beater#6 - Ritchie Coote
Keeper#1 - Oliver Wood
Keeper#2 - Ron Weasley
Keeper#3 - Cormac McLaggen
Chaser#1 - Katie Bell
Chaser#2 - Alicia Spinnet
Chaser#3 - Angelina Johnson
Chaser#4 - Demelza Robins
Chaser#5 - Ginny Weasley
Chaser#6 - Dean Thomas
Chaser#7 - Doesn't exist/James Potter I (Harry's dad)
I couldn't remember a seventh chaser being named, and I've checked - there isn't. Unless you count James Potter I, and as TUR80 said 'books 1-6'...that's debatable.
So! I make the scores:
BFM_Marty: 7 (I'm not counting Chaser #7)
BFM_Terra: 5
BFM_three60: 4
BFM_dStruct™: 1

Turbo, I challenge thee to a HP trivia contest. Whenever you're ready, PM me. Or we could just post questions for each other here...
I wouldn't do that Turbo, the only person who knows more than Marty about the books is JK Rowling.

Harry has a dream just before his first Quidditch final - i.e. in Prisoner of Azkaban. Describe it.

Yeah, phrased. Have edited now.

I'll give you that. There was one more detail that I was looking for...
-
um um um
i think i know ???
he forgot his broom?
-
Correct! The dream goes:
- Harry was late and missed the match.
- Oliver Wood yells at Harry, saying they had to use Neville instead.
- When playing the game, Draco Malfoy and the Slytherins turn up on dragons.
- When flying and trying to avoid fire from Malfoy's steed, Harry realises he has no broomstick, and plummets to the ground.

Challenge accepted, TUR80...
List the Hogwarts song lyrics - the one in Philosopher's Stone. Extra credit if you can say how it is sung by different people.
-
Well Fred and George sang in a funeral type tune, and from what I can remember the lyrics are:
Hogwarts, hogwarts, hoggy warty hogwarts, teach us something please, whether we be old and bold, or young with scabby knees. Our heads could do with filling, With some interesting stuff, For now their bare and full of air, dead flies and bits of fluff, so teach us things worth knowing, bring back what we forgot, just do yer best, we'll do the rest and learn until our brains all rot!
Sooo yeah...

meh

Both correct. Everyone is told to sing the lyrics to their favourite tune, resulting in everyone finishing at different times. Fred and George finish last due to singing the tune of a very flow funeral dirge.
One of the most interesting ways of singing a tune I have ever heard.

well this is now the second most popular general board post :woot: and probably the most popular every harry potter thread
wtg guys
so to celebrate ill ask another question
who knows more about harry potter
marty or J.K.Rowling
-
It's a tough one - - But I'm gonna have to say J.K Rowling
-
then why didnt u vote?
-
who knows more about harry potter - marty or J.K.Rowling?
I'm amazed you even have to ask. Of course it's me Rowling.
What are the measurements of the following peoples' wands?
Harry Potter
Ronald Weasley #1
Ronald Weasley #2
Tom Riddle
Bellatrix Lestrange
Peter Pettigrew
Draco Malfoy
Mary Cattermole
I think that's all the wands whose full details are mentioned. Some peoples' wands have some of their details mentioned, Like Lucius Malfoy, but not all of them (we don't know from the books how long his wand is). Anyone who can get all of these wands without looking them up in ANY WAY officially knows way too much about Harry Potter - I don't know them all off by heart.
Oh, and for an extra bonus mega prize, list the full properties of the Elder Wand. It's not mentioned in the books, but it has been canonised by Rowling.
-
wow thats a tuff one
riddle has a yew wand 13inch?
harry pheonix wand-11inch?
RON#1 a broken wand um 9inch
ron#2 10inch?
bellatrix, 12.5inch?
draco, 9.? inch
petegrew-8.?
cattermole- just over 10 inch
most of these are edugated guesses
the eldar wand is made of eldar
-
Just to clarify, I'm looking for Wood, Length and Core.
Harry Potter - Holly, 11'', Phoenix Feather
Ronald Weasley #1 - ?, ?, ?
Ronald Weasley #2 - ?, ?, ?
Tom Riddle - ?, ?, ?
Bellatrix Lestrange - ?, ?, ?
Peter Pettigrew - ?, ?, ?
Draco Malfoy - ?, ?, ?
Mary Cattermole - ?, ?, ?
Elder Wand - Elder, ?, ?
Remember that wand lengths are given to their quarter-inch length.
-
Harry Potter's is Holly and phoenix feather. I'd have to look up the rest. But I can't be bothered.
-
Harry Potter's is Holly and phoenix feather.
Added above. And as I said, I don't know them off-by heart. I'd be surprised, to be honest, if even Rowling herself did.
-
that is tuff
-
Wood, Length and Core.
Harry Potter - Holly, 11'', Phoenix Feather
Ronald Weasley #1 - ?, ?, Unicorn Tail Hair
Ronald Weasley #2 - ?, ?, Unicorn Tail Hair
Tom Riddle - Yew, ?, Phoenix Feather
Bellatrix Lestrange - ?, 12.75", ?
Peter Pettigrew - ?, ?, ?
Draco Malfoy - ?, ?, ?
Mary Cattermole - Cherry, ?, ?
Elder Wand - Elder, ?, Thestral Tail Hair
Cedric Diggory - ?, ?, ?
Fleur Delacour - ?, ?, Veela Hair
Victor Krum - ?, ?, ?
Neville Longbottom #2 - ?, ?, ?
I've added what I know from memory. Everything else I'm not sure about.
I've also added a few more wands that I've just remembered have their full details mentioned.
Elder Wand - Elder, ?, Thestral Tail Hair
As you can see, the Elder Wand has a unique Core. Almost every other wand uses one of three cores: Unicorn Tail Hair, Dragon Heartstring or Phoenix Feather. Some wand-makers have been known to use Veela Hair as well, but this is very rare. However, only one wand was ever made with Thestral Tail Hair, which Rowling describes as " a powerful and tricky substance that can be mastered only by a witch or wizard capable of facing death."
-
Well, on Friday I'll post the answers for those who don't have the time to look them up.
-
what u dont even no them urself
what hope do we have
-
AS good a chance as anyone else that has far too much spare time.
-
lol
what is everyones patronus
a point for every patronus and the character that forms it
-
Wood, Length and Core.
Harry Potter - Holly, 11'', Phoenix Feather
Ronald Weasley #1 - Ash, 12'', Unicorn Tail Hair (Elder brother Charlie's old Wand)
Ronald Weasley #2 - Willow, 14'', Unicorn Tail Hair
Tom Riddle - Yew, 13.5'', Phoenix Feather
Bellatrix Lestrange - Walnut, 12.75", Dragon Heartstring (Used by Hermione Granger in the last stages of book 7)
Peter Pettigrew - Chestnut, 9.25'', Dragon Heartstring (Later taken by Ron Weasley)
Draco Malfoy - Hawthorn, 10'', Unicorn Tail Hair (Later taken and used by Harry Potter to defeat Voldemort)
Mary Cattermole - Cherry, 8.75'', Unicorn Tail Hair
Elder Wand - Elder, 15'', Thestral Tail Hair (Details not mentioned in the books)
Cedric Diggory - Ash, 12.25'', Unicorn Tail Hair
Fleur Delacour - Rosewood, 9.5'', Veela Hair
Victor Krum - Hornbeam, 10.25'', Dragon Heartstring
Neville Longbottom #2 - Cherry, 13'', Unicorn Tail Hair (#1 Was his father Frank's old Wand, and was broken in 1996)
Well, there's the list of wands featured in the books. There are other wands whose details have been made canon - notably Hermione's (Vine, 10.75'', Dragon Heartstring) - and I included the Elder Wand just because I felt like it. Note that Harry and Voldemort are the only two characters in the books who have Phoenix feather cores. This is probably because Phoenixes are notoriously difficult to domesticate - there are only two known to have existed domestically in the time covered by the books. And as one of them (Fawkes) only ever gave two feathers, they are very rare.
I'll wait a while before posting any answers to the Patronus question, but here's an interesting bit of trivia: the only Death Eater ever to cast a Patronus was Severus Snape, as for most of them the ideals of a Patronus (love, hope, happiness) are contrary to their lifestyle. So Harry does have a magical power that Voldemort doesn't.
-
This thread is full of spoilers. Full of them! I've read the first book like six times and as you get further in the series, I've haven't read those as many time because I would re-read the ones that were out while waiting for the new ones. For that reason, I've only read the last one once. I remember pieces of it, but the movie was going to be the first one I've seen where I didn't know lots of details from the book. But not now! :P
Harry Potter = stag

There's also Dolores Umbridge who casts a cat.
And as to the specific type of Dog that Ron casts, without checking, I'd guess a Terrier.
And yea Tonks's second Patronuse is a werewolf but I can't remember what her first one was or whether it is mentioned. I just know it changed to being a werewolf from something else.

a alternate answer
Aberforth Dumbledore Goat Summoned outside the Hog's Head in an attempt to convince the Death Eaters who had seen Harry's Patronus that they really saw a goat.
Albus Dumbledore Phoenix His magical familiar, Fawkes, was a phoenix. Also he used it in 1995 as a message to Hagrid when Krum was stunned. It was described as "a ghostly bird that flew off in the direction of Hagrid's house".
Andros the Invincible Something allegedly the size of a giant Stated on his Chocolate Frog Card as the only wizard to make a Patronus that size.
Arthur Weasley Weasel First seen when he sent a message about Rufus Scrimgeour's arrival on Harry's seventeenth birthday. Later seen when Arthur sent a Patronus to 12 Grimmauld Place to inform Harry, Ron and Hermione that the Weasley family was safe.
Cho Chang Swan Seen in the last Dumbledore's Army meeting in 1996.
Dolores Umbridge Cat While interrogating Muggle-borns at a trial, she had cast a Patronus to ward the Dementors from the prosecutors. Her favourite animal, as shown by the many plates with cats on them in her office. She was able to cast the Patronus due to her affinity with the locket Horcrux's evil influence.
Ernie Macmillan Boar Seen in the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998.
Flavius Belby "Something with horns" In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, he stated he cast off a Lethifold by performing the Patronus Charm. It says the Lethifold was thrown into the air on the horns of his Patronus.
Ginny Weasley Horse[4] Seen in the last Dumbledore's Army meeting in 1996.
Harry Potter Stag Harry's Patronus is in the shape of his father's Animagus form and Patronus. He learned how to conjure a Patronus at an exceptionally young age.
Hermione Granger Otter Seen in the last Dumbledore's Army meeting in 1996. It is apparently the only spell Hermione has trouble with.
James Potter Stag James' Animagus form was also that of a stag.
Kingsley Shacklebolt Lynx Seen in 1997 when he warned the Order during Bill and Fleur's wedding of the downfall of the Ministry of Magic and Rufus Scrimgeour's death.
Lily Evans Doe Mentioned in conjunction with Snape's Patronus. Is was also the female form of her husband's Patronus.
Luna Lovegood Hare[5] Seen in the last Dumbledore's Army meeting in 1996 and in the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998.
Minerva McGonagall Cat with glasses Just before the Battle of Hogwarts, she sent her Patronus out to alert the other Heads of House that Hogwarts Castle would soon be under attack by Lord Voldemort and his followers.
Nymphadora Tonks Werewolf (previous Patronus unknown) The form of Tonks' Patronus changed in 1996. It became a werewolf due to her love for Remus Lupin, though Harry Potter and Hermione Granger initially believed it was a black dog, triggered by the death of her cousin Sirius Black (whose Animagus form was a black dog). Changes of Patronus are rare and usually caused by devastating life traumas.
Ron Weasley Jack Russell Terrier[6] Seen in the last Dumbledore's Army meeting in 1996 and in the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998.
Seamus Finnigan Fox He could not yet produce a fully formed (corporeal) Patronus in Dumbledore's Army, though in the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998, he managed a Patronus in the shape of a fox.
Severus Snape
Doe
Acted as Harry's guide through the woods to where Godric Gryffindor's Sword was hidden. Snape's Patronus mirrored Lily's due to his unspoken love for her that began when they were small children.

I'd personally not post answers, even if they are in black...
ginny weasleys is mentioned in the movie
Equally, I tend not to think of the movies as 'canon' - certainly not where they conflict with the books. If they conflict, the books take precedence. Here, I suppose, it never actually says in the books what Ginny's patronus is, so it may as well be what it is in the movies...Rowling was consulted on most/all of the script, so...
ill have to look neville up
Neville's patronus is never mentioned; it is entirely possible he never manages to produce one.
Harry Potter - Stag (BFM_JANE)
James Potter - Stag (BFM_three60)
Lily Potter (Lily Evans) - Doe (BFM_three60)
Severus Snape - Doe (BFM_three60)
Ron Weasely - Terrier (Liam)
Hermione Granger - Otter (Liam)
Albus Dumbledore - Phoenix (bfm_Xtr3me)
Aberforth Dumbledore - Goat (BFM_three60)
Luna Lovegood - Hare (bfm_Xtr3me)
Cho Chang -
Arthur Weasely -
Minerva McGonagoll - Cat (BFM_three60)
Kingsley Shacklebolt - Lynx (BFM_three60)
Nymphadora Tonks - Werewolf (BFM_three60) - her first patronus is never mentioned.
Seamus Finnigan -
Ernie MacMillan -
Dolores Umbridge - Cat (Liam)
Ginny Weasely -
So there are still five Patronuses left to get without looking them up, of which one only appears in the films.
-
Is Cho's a Swan?
Something seems to be screaming to me "bird" so if it's not a swan might it be a Raven or perhaps a Dove?

I thought Seamus had a dog like a retriever or something big and friendly/faithful. And I thought Ginny did too, maybe a beagle or something clever (a clever animal). Guessing!
-
Well, the answers are up in black anyway, so I'll post them and we can move on.
Harry Potter - Stag (BFM_JANE)

Nymphadora Tonks - Werewolf (BFM_three60) - her first patronus is never mentioned.
Seamus Finnigan - Fox
Ernie MacMillan - Boar
Dolores Umbridge - Cat (Liam)
Ginny Weasely - Horse - seen in the film adaption of Order of the Phoenix
So, new question: What is the opening line of each of the books?
-
"Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of Number 4, Privet Drive [in Little Whinging], were happy to say that they were perfectly ordinary, thank you very much." - HP1
"To the villagers of Little Hangleton it would always be known as 'The Riddle House'." - HP4
Don't remember any of the others, though HP2 opens, I think, with Harry in the garden? Hp3 with Harry in his bedroom, HP5 with Harry in a park somewhere, HP6 in the (Muggle) PM's offices, and HP7 opens with Snape and (?)Yaxley walking towards Malfoy Manor.

Both given answers are so close that I'll say they're right. I'll give the chapter titles if it helps anyone.
The Philosopher's Stone - The Boy Who Lived: Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of Number 4, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. (BFM_three60)
The Chamber of Secrets - The Worst Birthday:
The Prisoner of Azkaban - Owl Post:
The Goblet of Fire - The Riddle House: The villagers of Little Hangleton still called it 'the riddle House', even though it had been many years since the Riddle family had lived there. (BFM_three60)
The Order of the Phoenix - Dudley Demented:
The Half-Blood Prince - The Other Minister:
The Deathly Hallows - The Dark Lord Ascending:
HP5 doesn't open in a park, but goes to one a few pages in - however, the film opens in a park. And no, HP1 is NOT called The Sorcerer's Stone. Apparently US publishers thought that a 'Philosopher' wasn't exciting enough, or that they wouldn't understand it.

A quick question
cos i have no idea what those answers are
the name of the ministry official who investigates the gaunt house in dumbledores memory
-
Bob Ogden, head of the Dpt of Magical Law Enforcement. Probably related to Tiberius Ogden, a member of the Wizengamot in 1995.
-
Marty i think it is time to throw some more of our challenge questions in
What age do unicorns turn

silver
white

ok, seriously where in the books or movies are these things written/said?

6 months springs to mind, also I think female unicorns might be a different colour at birth or something?
ok, seriously where in the books or movies are these things written/said?
Oh you can find them, it's all in there. All the answers I've given are from memory, since a) I don't have copies of the books with me, and b) I seriously couldn't be bothered looking up the other ones.
I always say (well, truth be told this is the first time I've said it) that Marty knows more about what the books say than I do (and indeed anything else we've both watched/ read/ listened to), but that I know more about what the books mean. Possibly.
-
I always say...that Marty knows more about what the books say than I do, but that I know more about what the books mean. Possibly.
Hmm...thank you and...er...no, thank you?
ok, seriously where in the books or movies are these things written/said?
Which question? Bob Ogden is found in Prince in the chapter The House of Gaunt. The details about unicorns are found in both Goblet in the chapter The Second Task and, most likely, in the charity book Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.
I'll give the first few words of each chapter...
The Philosopher's Stone - The Boy Who Lived: Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of Number 4, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. (BFM_three60)

The Philosopher's Stone - The Boy Who Lived: Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of Number 4, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. (BFM_three60)
The Chamber of Secrets - The Worst Birthday: Not for the first time, an argument had broken out over breakfast at number four, Privet Drive.
The Prisoner of Azkaban - Owl Post: Harry Potter was an unusual boy in many ways.
The Goblet of Fire - The Riddle House: The villagers of Little Hangleton still called it 'the riddle House', even though it had been many years since the Riddle family had lived there. (BFM_three60)
The Order of the Phoenix - Dudley Demented: The hottest day of the summer so far was drawing to a close and a drowsy silence lay over the large, square houses of Privet Drive.
The Half-Blood Prince - The Other Minister: It was nearing midnight and the Prime Minister was sitting alone in his office, reading a long memo that as slipping through his brain without leaving the slightest trace of meaning behind.
The Deathly Hallows - The Dark Lord Ascending: The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane.

cant remember the name but im pretty sure the nephew of the inventor of the wolfsbane potion is the guy your looking for, not the son ;p
btw, it is mentioned in the Prisoner of Azkaban (Lupin needs it) and it is mentioned in the Half Blood Prince (i think in one of Slughorn's dinner parties)

ill assume for all these questions that the book trumps the movies?
-
Absolutely!
Sad truth is that the films don't contain as much information about the world of Harry Potter as the books. But that can't really be helped - among other things there isn't really enough time to go into all the back-stories, histories, all of the characters and so on. Books are a wonderful way of letting the reader find out everything you want them to.
Having said that, the best-made films can be almost as rich in detail as a book. But it can be harder to find.
-
Having said that, the best-made films can be almost as rich in detail as a book. But it can be harder to find.
Now what films are you talking about, I wonder...

The Hp films would have to go about 1,000,000 years to get all the detail into them in a interesting way

[EDIT 2] WOOHOO!!!!!! 1000TH POST!!!! WEWT!!!!!

I know that Granger wasn't in the carriage, as she's muggle-born and only became a favourite after her first potions lesson. I'm pretty sure that there wasn't a Carrow in there either, 'cos Slughorn didn't invite the kids of Death Eaters.

-
Griphook
Gornuk?
????????????

-
There are three Goblins mentioned - the two we already know (Griphook, Gornuk) and one in the last visit to Gringotts in Deathly Hallows.
-
Well Ragnuk or Ranguk or something like that the First made Griffindors Sword, And Bogrod took Harry, Ron, Hermione and Griphook down to the Lestrainges Vault.
-

Impressive! Ragnuk the first was a very skilled goblin armorer, but he isn't seen in the books - he gets one mention in the whole series (Shell Cottage, Deathly Hallows). Equally, another goblin who gets a single mention is Ragnok, who is a colleague of Bill Weasely's at Gringotts (Order of the Phoenix, Order of the Phoenix).
-
that was the fourth i was thinking about
-
Well, if you're counting him, then you might as well count the Goblin rebels who are mentioned in books one through four. He never actually appears, so I'd not count him.
-
fair enough
What does SPEW & SPUG stand for (they are different things BTW)
-
Well, obviously they're different.
Society for the Promotion of Elfish* Welfare
Society for the Protection of Ugly Goblins - I think
*Note the distinction in meaning between "Elfish" - the quality of being an elf; of the race of elves - and "Elvish" - the same word, only for people who can't spell "Elfish".
-
yeah thats right
i cant think of any new questions
*digs into Marty's challenge questions*
where do vanished objects go?
-
"into non-being, which is to say everything"
-
yeah
*screams at Terra's Avatar*
-
I would be 100% sure that J.K Rowling knows the most :)
-

Incorrect, three60! Elvish is only used to refer to the high-elves and wood-elves created by the Valar when the world was young.
:siderofl: Jokes...
What is the first question on the 1996 Charms O.W.L. paper?
-
Can't remember the wording, but the answer was "Wingardium Leviosa; Swish-and-Flick".
-
1996?
was it that long ago
what is the spell used to make objects fly and how is it cast
Thats my answer BTW

Yes, it was 1996 in the 'canon' - in Deathly Hallows it mentions that Lily and James Potter lost their lives on 31st October 1981, when Harry was one year old. Therefore he turned eleven in 1991 (remember that his birthday is in July) and was fifteen in the 1995-96 school year. This, incidentally, makes a scene in Half-Blood Prince the movie become apocryphal: in the opening scene, Death Eaters are scene destroying the millennium bridge, London. This wasn't opened until June 2000, but the canonical year for that scene is 1996.
And I guess those two answers are correct, really...
1)a) Name the incantation and b) describe the wand-movement to make objects fly.
Roughly.
Who resigns from the Wizengamot in Order of the Phoenix?

resigns
hmm
thinks to self
did this person resign or was he kicked out

not fudge, i thought Dumbledore was kicked out
-
Fudge would only be kicked out in The Half-Blood Prince after he is forced to step down as Minister For Magic.
Yes, Albus Dumbledore was kicked out. But I was looking for two people (one man, one woman) who resigned from the Wizengamot in protest at something the then-minister For Magic did.
-
im stumped
ill have to read it
-
Yeah, this is a tricky one...SERIOUSLY tricky.
-
m gunna post another q while you all struggle with marty's Question
What are the names of all the House Elf's Mentioned that are alive
i think there are three
-
Kreacher
Winky
is there really another?
-
Marty's question: Was it Tiberius ogden?
Turbo's: Hokey?
EDIT: no wait.. she died aswell
-
Marty's question: Was it Tiberius ogden?
Correct! Well, that's one of them...Tiberius Ogden and (who?) resigned in 1995 after Cornelius Fudge passed Education Decree Number Twenty-Three, creating the post of 'Hogwarts High Inquisitor'.
And I can only think of four house-elves mentioned by name, and two of them die - Dobby in Deathly Hallows and Hokey long before Harry was born.
-
i probably should have phrased my question better
i meant were alive during any of the books not all of the books
sorry for the confusion, Dobby is the third
-
Who resigns from the Wizengamot in Order of the Phoenix?
Tiberius Ogden and Madam Griselda Marchbanks both resigned in 1995 in protest against the creation of the post of Hogwarts High Inquisitor.
-
Just prior to the Third and final Task of the Triwizard Tournament, what did Fleur Delacour expect the task to involve?
-
Underground tunnels containing treasure which the champions had to find. Harry thought he'd just borrow a Niffler from Hagrid.
Anyone else feel like asking a question?
-
well i would but you would know the answer straight away Marty as I don't ask questions about such details that you and a few others seem to know ;p
-
I'll give it three days before I answer! Honest!
-
ok, i have just googled some of these so i dont know which book the answer would come from but here
and if the answers i got are wrong, then I will turn to Marty for the answers lol,
and you dont have to wait 3 days Marty ;p
1. What is Nearly Headless Nick's real name?
2. In which year did Dumbledore become headmaster?
3. What type of wizard is Harry's godfather? Eight letters
4. According to the Harry Potter books, what is the full name of Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry?
5. What kind of ice cream treat did Harry get at the zoo in the 1st book?
-
1. Sir Nicolas de Mimsy-Porpington
2. That's a tough one. Armando Dippet was Headmaster 50 years before the events of Chamber of Secrets, so that would be 1942. Dumbledore was headmaster by at least 1980 and probably some ten or fifteen years before - I'll guess that he started in c. 1960, but I don't know.
3. Animagus (among other characteristics...)
4. Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore
5. Knickerbocker glory
-
Albus Dumbledore became Headmaster of Hogwarts in 1956, but this isn't included anywhere in the books or films - in fact, it only came to light within the past few months, from what I can find out, after JKR announced a new HP-related project which gives backstory to McGonagall (as she replaced Dumbledore as transfiguration teacher, the date she takes that post must be shortly after Dumbledore became headmaster).
And the rest of three60's answers are correct.
-
yep, all questions are right except #5,
i got the 1st book just to be sure and that is not the ice cream treat he had (to my knowledge),
at least the one his aunt and uncle bought him anyway
as for the year, seeing how i did just copy and paste that question, the answer they gave was either 1956 or 1970 as it was unsure so ill stick with Marty for that one lol
-

Regarding question #5 - he does get to finish Dudley's first knickerbocker glory because he complained that it wasn't big enough. He also gets bought a 'cheap lemon ice lolly' from a stall. I can't remember anything else...
-
ah, k
well i just looked for the 1st reference and then put the book away xd
and ye, the cheap lemon ice lolly was what i was looking for :)
