Start with a little "Good Times, Bad Times" by Godsmack, followed with a good helping of "Spoonman" and "Black Hole Sun" by Sound Garden.
Toss in a frying pan, with some "Stupify" by Disturbed. and simmer. After approximatley 5:42, toss in a dash of "Running Blind(Accoustic)" and "Touche(Accoustic)" by Godsmack. Throw a little Killswitch Engage, mainly "End of the Heartache" and Stone Sour, "Bother" on the side for flavouring.
Drizzle on some "Rascal King" by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and your set. Be sure to serve with a nice glass of "Sweet Sacrifice" by Evanescence. <---Did I ever mention that I HATE spelling that name? Lol!

I'm pretty much a person who focuses primarily on the beats and the way a song sounds rather than the lyrical content. As a result, I'm pretty indifferent about a lot of genres. However, thanks to Spartan my new favorite song is "We Made It" by Busta Rhymes featuring Linkin Park. It pairs awesome lyrics with an awesome beat.

One of these songs isn't available on the net unless you pay for it, so I had to specifically upload this to show it.
It's by Rob Balducci. He comes up with a lot of cool stuff. He's not a very famous artist unless you live in the New York area. I'm glad to give him a little publicity in this innocent little post! xD
Click for Frequency of Twilight (http://tyraelsfiles.webs.com/13%20C.O.L.%20_%20Frequency%20of%20Twilight%20(B.mp3)
It's... soothing while still carrying on a kickin' beat with the drums. Try racing with this playing. Halfway through, you totally forget it's even playing. I love it.

A brilliant album where Schifrin, surprisingly, blends famous jazz songs (or the styles of famous artists) with famous classical pieces. Sublime - particularly 'Sketches of Miles', which refers to Miles Davis and features various famous songs of his, including Four and So What.

Mind in a Box - The Dream
You thought you had it all, but now all that has changed... never again put up with a world that is so deranged... leaving behind all that you had known before.... still confused, but you can feel that there is so much more.... I had felt so lost before, my boat had somewhere run ashore. I cried out into the night, there was nothing that felt right. I had given myself in, and self-pity was my kin. now I leave all that behind, to re-emerge and live the dream....

Chucho Valdes: Solo Piano.
Awesomeness! This guy is an insane jazz pianist...
EDIT: Now: Steve Reich - Piano Phase.
This is absolutely crazy. It's a six note piano phrase that is being looped, with some of the loops being pushed forwards or backwards from where it 'should' be. So you get these crazy harmonies when they're playing in time, and really fast passages when they're out of time...wow.
Oh, and it's 20 minutes long.

Butcher Red is an album by an experimental Thrash-Punk-Jazz group, EGG3, featuring one of my tutors (SImon Kaylor) on saxophones. It's really, really odd...and great!
As an example of its 'oddness', here are the track titles:
Butcher Red

Oh Now, Not Again

JACO PASTORIUS
Quite possibly one of the best bass players ever and a wonderful composer. He died at 35 after complications arising from mental health problems, but in his career - which started at 13 - he changed the face of bass guitar. Amongst his lasting changes was that he started playing the strings very close to the bridge (the bottom of the strings) because there they were more tense. This meant that they didn't move as much, allowing for faster playing. Most bass players since Jaco play with their fingers near the bridge as the 'standard' position.
Here are three songs which should give an idea of Jaco:
These first two come from Jaco's debut, self-titled album. He is 25.
Donna Lee (http://grooveshark.com/s/Donna+Lee/44k4oc?src=5)
Portrait of Tracy (http://grooveshark.com/s/Portrait+Of+Tracy/B9SzW?src=5)
This is the title track from Pat Metheny's debut album. The song is composed by Metheny, but Jaco's playing is sublime. So is Metheny's, who was only 21 at the time (Jaco is 24). The drummer is Bob Moses.

Some good ol' bebop today with Al Cohn and Al Porcino, followed by some more modern jazz by Keith Jarrett.
Keith Jarret annoys me in some ways. He's a wonderful pianist, but he has the habit of singing along with his playing with the voice of a tone-death squirrel on helium. Thankfully, on his Sun Bear Concerts, recorded live in Japan, you can't really hear his singing.

Saw Jon Gomm, Erik Mongrain and Giuliano Modarelli at a gig in town last night. Three ridiculously, shamelessly talented guitarists with some wonderful music. And, of course, all great characters, too - especially Jon. I'll hopefully be posting a video shortly of him giving the whole audience a guitar lesson. In the meantime, here's this from Jon:

Classic FM's Hall of Fame 2012 - the 300 favourite pieces of music based on a vote by their listeners.
I can't believe that we've already had Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto, that's way better than Prelude a L'Apres-midi d'un faune...
-
And now it's Beethoven's third Piano Concerto. Only number 181. What is the world coming to?
-
You just don't like Debussy, three60, so you're not a fair judge of where his music should be...I love it!
And to stay on topic, I'm listening to Gentleman's Dub Club, a modern reggae band - I vaguely know the drummer, Tommy Evans. I've heard some of his own music too, like the Green Seagull Suite (which won the contempory jazz composition award at the 2011 British Composer Awards).
EDIT: Now, for a REAL outrage, Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps only came 152nd. That's shamefully low. I did like the recording they played, though...I'm going to have to add it to my collection.
-
At least it was up 16 so moving in the right direction. But yeah, 152 is 151 places too low. What recording was it?
-
At least it was up 16 so moving in the right direction. But yeah, 152 is 151 places too low. What recording was it?
It is 151 places too low! I'm glad you agree. :P
It was a recording of the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.
I was very happy when I found this out - whilst it was playing on the radio, I thought it sounded like a modern recording; the bass drum was just too crisp for anything pre-1995ish. I went and looked it up, and presto! It was recorded in 2006.
-
Several more top pieces falling far short of where they should be: Schubert's Trout, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Sibelius' Violin Concerto, Mozart's Flute and Harp, etc. All of them behind Barry's score to Dances with Wolves, which is good but hardly that good.
Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 on now...
-
Any bets for #1?
-
Rach 2.
-
And now Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Part, a piece that is basically three notes repeated over and over again for ten minutes... How does that beat Nutcracker? How?
-
Any bets for #1?
Rach 2.
Actually it could be Beethoven's year with his Emperor, he's had a good year so far with something like 11 of his 13 entries so far going up the chart. 5 of him still to come, which will be 6th, 7th, 9th, Emperor and Moonlight.
-
And now Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Part, a piece that is basically three notes repeated over and over again for ten minutes... How does that beat Nutcracker? How?
It is a beautiful piece, though! You're just not into your minimalist music.
I'm a bit surprised that Marriage of Figaro has beaten Magic Flute - the overture to Magic Flute is better. Amongst other things, it has possibly the finest example of minorisation of a major theme ever.
It could be something by either Beethoven or Mozart; they each have something like 18 pieces in the chart this year. Mozart still has 2 left to go and Beethoven, as you say, has five.
I just hope #1 isn't taken by that stupid Lark Ascending again...anything else is fine by me.
Except possibly something by Phillip Glass.
-
All I'm saying is, I muted it for 30 seconds, made sure I got the count right, unmuted it, and it came back in without my noticing any real change. If I sat at a keyboard and kept plonking three notes you wouldn't call that a brilliant piece, so why does Part get away with it?
It's like the "no-one does a black square quite like this guy" rubbish in art.

A band featuring three acquaintances of mine - Ruby Wood (vocals), Simon Beddoe (flugelhorn) and Tommy Evans (drums). Kind of a blend of dance, pop and jazz. Didn't like it at first, but it's seriously growing on me. The video's not bad, either.

Today, I will be at a concert playing:
Anatoly Lyadov's The Enchanted Lake;
Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No 3, and;
Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 6.
Especially looking forward to seeing the Rach 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rach_3) performed live (http://www.youtube.com/v/D5mxU_7BTRA&rel=0)!
EDIT: Concert was amazing! Tchaikovshy's sixth is such a sad symphony...and the energy of the pianist playing the Rach 3! Incredible!
Today, my attention was drawn to Thomas Leeb (http://www.youtube.com/v/j8lUIqwQpZQ&rel=0), yet another annoyingly talented guitarist in a style similar to Jon Gomm. He's not quite as good yet, but he looks quite a bit younger, so I'll be interested to see how he turns out in the years to come!

Triple-posting, buy hey - someone needs to get this thread back on the front page.
Artist: Sonny Rollins
Album: The Bridge
Performers: Sonny Rollins (Tenor Saxophone), Jim Hall (Guitar), Bob Cranshaw (Double Bass) and Ben Riley (Drums)
The story behind this album is quite interesting.
In 1959, feeling pressured by the unexpected swiftness of his rise to fame, Rollins took a three year hiatus to focus on perfecting his craft. A resident of the Lower East Side of Manhattan with no private space to practice, Rollins took his saxophone to the Williamsburg Bridge to practice alone, and his first recording after his return to performance took its name from those solo sessions.

You really ought to try listening to this (http://www.myspace.com/music/player?sid=14044438&ac=now) - it's Live Maria Roggen and Lars Andreas Haug performing a cover of Woodstock by Joni Mitchell. Double post, but hey! I don't care.
Avid readers of this thread will know that I rave about the music of Igor Stravinsky - usually, Le Sacre du Printemps, or The Rite of Spring. Today, however, it's L'Oiseau de Feu, or The Firebird. Like The Rite of Spring, this is one of Stravinsky's ballets, written in 1910, three years before his most famous work caused a riot at its premiere.
There are two beautiful ways to listen to The Firebird: as the full ballet (http://www.youtube.com/v/E8L__PA9PCo&rel=0) or as the shorter suite (http://www.youtube.com/v/fFwbQEQH7u8). Both are fantastic, although the full ballet gives you a greater musical 'context' whilst the suite cuts out all but the more essential parts.
As an introduction, I'd recommend listening to the suite - and if you like that, listen to the full thing.
Enjoy!
EDIT: my favourite part is from 33-39 minutes in the full ballet; in the suite, this is from 10:30-15:30.
-

I've been listening to the Halo 4 soundtrack. There have been a few previews (http://www.youtube.com/v/BQ-mmSh9yMw&rel=0) out, and it sounds good - very 'epic', if slightly clichéd at times.
This is the first soundtrack in the Halo series which hasn't involved Michael Salvatori at all. Martin O'Donnell is also absent - the music for Halo 4 is being composed by Nail Davidge, who has worked with, amongst other things, Massive Attack.
Can't wait for November!
-
Another double post, but I still don't care.
On BBC Radio 3, at 23:00 every Monday, there is a program called Jazz On 3. Normally I wouldn't post a radio program in this thread, but this Monday, a friend of mine was featured. Luke Wynter is the guitarist for a modern Jazz-Funk band called the Roller Trio, who are making something of a name for themselves in Yorkshire.
To listen to the Roller Trio, visit their Soundcloud (http://soundcloud.com/rollertrio). This is, as I say, very modern Jazz-Funk, but don't let that put you off: it has great attitude, driving grooves and a great sense of fun!
-
A triple post! Woot!
Despite southerners in the UK often claiming that 'nothing happens up north', it ain't so. Especially not for the music scene: the Leeds jazz scene is almost as strong as London's, despite Leeds being about 1/12th of the size. One of the many awesome acts Leeds has produced in recent years is 'trioVD', a sax/guitar/drums lineup which pushes music to its limits. No matter what genre you try to describe them with, you will always be able to make the exact opposite genre work just as well.
Here (http://triovd.com/#ecd/soundcloud)'s their homepage/soundcloud thing, and here (http://soundcloud.com/naimedge/triovd-invisible-remix)'s another song that perfectly captures how wild and unpredictable they are. Their listeners range from die-hard jazzers to dub fanatics, prog rockers to funk freaks.
Seriously, check 'em out. I'd recommend the second link as a trioVD 'taster'.
-
Thread Revival!
Yesterday, I went to listen to Tommy Evans' the Green Seagull Suite for the second time. This is an absolutely phenomenal piece of modern jazz: ninety minutes of music chronicling the life of the composer's uncle, from childhood, through wartime, to grandchildren and death. It is incredibly powerful and moving, with each of the phases of his life perfectly realised. The complexity and depth that Evans gets from twelve musicians is incredible (with several of them playing two or three instruments throughout the suite).
I now have the CD of this suite*, which has a very good recording quality, but it just doesn't compare to the sheer energy of this piece live. Even Rite of Spring, which is probably my favorite piece of music ever, didn't get my heart pounding like this.

We Are Enough (https://www.youtube.com/v/qr-6nBHzp_8&rel=0) by Melt Yourself Down.
Weird song, this, as are most of those that I post. A strange mix of electronic sounds, really heavy guitar, funky horn sections and a straight rock drum beat with punk-esque vocals. Genre? Unclassifiable.
Even stranger are Opto File 1 (http://www.youtube.com/v/S2RdMlwx8ck&rel=0) and Opto File 2 (http://www.youtube.com/v/ZQ1zjPqJBPQ&rel=0) from Alva Noto + Opiate's album Oto Files. I'm told that this music is called Ambient Minimalist Glitch Music. Whatever you call it, it's certainly strange. And also quite interesting. The second video also has a very good visualiser of the sounds being played.

Yah, really!
And...underwhelmed. Howard Shore borrows heavily from his LOTR score, but I just didn't feel that this matched up to its predecessor - good though the music is.
Mind you, I recently realised that my reference for scores written by Howard is a bit off. I was watching a film and thinking, "this sounds like a bad composer trying to sound like Howard Shore".
It was Howard Shore.

I've been listening to Tim Minchin - mostly his take on Christmas, White Wine In The Sun, which almost exactly matches my way of thinking.
I've also - shockingly - started listening to dubstep. I think I got into it through fusions with folk music (e.g. Lindsey Stirling (https://www.youtube.com/v/JGCsyshUU-A&rel=0)) or whatever, but now I've just started listening to the raw stuff. I'd like to thank Octane for putting some good stuff up for me to try out, like this (http://www.youtube.com/v/ZoTeVLzp9Vk&rel=0).

Nice Marty! You obviously have musical talent to go to music college; good for you!
I tried to play acoustic 6 string guitar, I also had a fender strat and kramer guitar white on black. Sold them all cuz I couldn't play a lick after 2 years of trying :siderofl:. Then I bought a epiphone bass guitar and got so frustrated that i smashed it in my room just like a big rockstar after trying to play it  and failed  :bang:.

As do I. They just need to figure out who they are going to have as a singer now. My personal favourite was Tarja. In my opinion, her more operatic sound meshed better with the instrumentals being laid down by the rest of them. That is not to take anything away from Annette, but I liked the feel of the music from Tarja's era. That said Dark Passion Play would have been a COMPLETELY different album with her singing.
Okay, done now.

I take it you're not a Floor Jansen fan, then?

Actually, I haven't heard any of her renditions of the songs yet. I shall have to check that out and render my verdict. I know she was filling in for th recent tour, but has she signed on to do their next album?
-
... has she signed on to do their next album?
Not yet! They haven't even announced a 'next album' yet.
With luck, I'll be seeing her sing for Nightwish later this year. Until then, I'm not giving an opinion on whether she should stay.

Found this (http://www.youtube.com/embed/OC-8wF7gUVY?rel=0) video of a young guy singing "A Change Is Gonna Come" and he did a really good job. Sam Cooke did the original (I think, there are a lot of covers for it) and it's even better. I'm listening to it as I type!

Great song. Was watching a program about him, Otis Redding and a few others, a few months ago. He wrote that song after hearing Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind, and thinking it ironic that a white person had written it (a song about racism), he felt compelled to write one of his own!
You Send Me is a great song of his
If you like those:
Sitting on the Dock of a Bay - Otis
What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
At Last - Etta James
Very old stuff, but goosebumps!

I've been listening to Jacob Collier: a virtually unknown multi-instrumentalist who has put up a series of phenomenal arrangements and original compositions onto YouTube. I've already posted his Pure Imagination (http://www.youtube.com/v/IcVEx6UrtF8&rel=0) arrangement elsewhere, so here (http://www.youtube.com/v/0BE52oSiYKo&rel=0)'s an original of his: it's a setting of a Robert Frost poem.

Disarm the Descent- Killswitch Engage- Disarm the Descent
Just picked up this album last night. Their newest, and the return of their original singer, Jesse Leach. I have to admit, I was sceptical of what they would sound like with Jesse back, having been introduced to KsE by The End of the Heartache, and Howard Jones' powerful vocals, but after hearing the first single "In Due Time", I was pleasantly convinced. Sure, Jesse's voice doesn't have the same type of power as Howard's but he has certainly changed since their first album, Alive or Just Breathing. Good album, and a get for any Killswitch Engage/Times of Grace fan.

Device (Complete Album)- Device
As I am a rather loyal Disturbed fan, when I heard vocalist David Draiman was working on a side project, while Disturbed was on hiatus, I decided that I would have to check it out. Even with some critics panning it as another Disturbed album, I still waited for it, and had decided to buy it. I intentionally didn't go and preview the songs on the web, so that I wasn't spoiled during the listening. Then I got it.
In my non-professional critical review, I say this: \m/ (-_-) \m/.
In my mind the album rocks. Does it sound like Disturbed: yes, but the reason behind that is simple, Draiman is writing the songs and sings them, so yes, it sounds like Disturbed...lyrically. The album also features quite a few guest appearances from other musicians: Serj Tankian, "Geezer" Butler, Lzzy Hale and M. Shadows.
Musically, it is an industrial trip. The instrumentals laid down on it are great. Reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails, to me.
Overall, I think it's a great album and a great addition to anyone who likes Disturbed.
