A positive rant?
« on: May 05, 2012, 04:05:17 PM »
Well there i was writing an essay when i wanted to describe someone doing the opposite of "ranting" or "having a go" at someone, but couldnt think of a suitable single word.  I ended up saying he applauded, or the like, but it wasnt really the same.

Any ideas for this sort of word?  :)

Tell us the whole sentence. Context is important.

  • Despite the cost of living, it remains popular.

Praise might be good. I like applaud. If none of them seem strong enough, you can spice them up with an adverb, like enthusiastically praised or something.

Depending on what you're trying to say, some other options could be celebrate, recommend, commend/commendation, glorify, acclamation/acclaim, endorse/endorsement.

Applaud is close but is usually specific to one type of praise (clapping).  A related word fits though...laud: verb, to praise.

BTW...does anyone know another word for thesaurus?

If we take 'to rant' as meaning to make a lengthy verbal or written attack then the closest I can think of to represent making lengthy positive comments would be 'to eulogise'.

I also like commend and acclaim as mentioned up yonder ^^^^^  :)

Whatever word you choose sounds like you would like to do it vociferously.
