Title: Quotes!
Post by: -shiNe! on September 02, 2011, 01:30:29 PM
I love reading Inspiring quotes, or really just any quote. Quote from a movie, quote from a book, etc. They can make you laugh, cry, or see outside of the box. I recently ran across this one quote In my rereading of the Eragon/Inheritance Trilogy. Which Inspired me to make a thread that hopefully will have many other responses from you all!

I'll start, and when you do post a quote, please post the source.

"Live In the present, remember the past, and fear not the future, for It doesn't exist and never shall. There Is only now."
-Saphira from Eldest, written by Christopher Paolini

I have so many quotes I like, but they're all from one book series, lol. I'll just post a few for now. :)

"The only sovereign I can allow to rule me is reason. The first law of reason is this: what exists, exists; what is, is. From this irreducible, bedrock principle, all knowledge is built. This is the foundation from which life is embraced. Reason is a choice. Wishes and whims are not facts, nor are they a means to discovering them. Reason is our only way of grasping reality--it is our basic tool of survival. We are free to evade the effort of thinking, to reject reason, but we are not free to avoid the penalty of the abyss we refuse to see."
- Faith of the Fallen by Terry Goodkind

"Your life is yours and yours alone, rise up and live it."
- Confessor by Terry Goodkind

And one more that is similar to the quote you posted:
"Life is the future, not the past. The past can teach us, through experience, how to accomplish things in the future, comfort us with cherished memories, and provide the foundation of what has already been accomplished. But only the future holds life. To live in the past is to embrace what is dead. To live life to its fullest, each day must be created anew. As rational, thinking beings, we must use our intellect, not a blind devotion to what has come before, to make rational choices."
- Pillars of Creation by Terry Goodkind

Imo, I say not. Because It's not a game, just a list of favorite quotes from people. Like the "What're You Listening To" thread. It's not a game, just what they are listening to. Like that, transferred to quotes that you love.

Maybe it fits in the Cogitative Corner?

There are threads similar in nature there, like Mind-share, Music you should listen to and even Arnold quotes... The tittle may have to change to something like "Inspirational quotes" to be accepted into the Cogitative Corner.

Now, in the purpose of this thread, I don't really have any quotes I like.

I don't plan on changing the title of the thread. Quotes come In all shapes and sizes, no need to narrow It down.

The General Board is more for small announcements, or announcements from guests. So this thread has been moved to the Cognitive Corner.

I personally love failed predictions. Some of the best I've heard are:

"Stocks have reached a permanently high plateau." - Irving Fisher, Professor of Economics, Yale University, 1929
"Where a calculator on the ENIAC is equipped with 19,000 vacuum tubes and weighs 30 tons, computers in the future may have only 1,000 vacuum tubes and perhaps only weigh 1.5 tons." - Popular Mechanics, forecasting the relentless march of science, 1949.
"I think there's a world market for about five computers." - Thomas J. Watson, chairman of the board of IBM.
"But what [...] is it good for?" - Engineer at the Advanced Computing Systems Division of IBM, 1968, commenting on the microchip
"There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home." - Ken Olson, president of Digital Equipment Corp. 1977
"Drill for oil? You mean drill into the ground to try and find oil? You're crazy." - Drillers who Edwin L. Drake tried to enlist in 1859.
"$640K ought to be enough for anybody." - Bill Gates, 1981.
"Men might as well project a voyage to the Moon as attempt to employ steam navigation against the stormy North Atlantic Ocean." - Dr. Dionysus Lardner, Professor of Natural Philosophy and Astronomy, University College, London, 1838

The quote from my sig,

"Indeed 'tis subtly narrow, that bottle neck through which the red sand runs, so hairlike its trickle that the eye beholds no diminishment in the upper chamber, and only at the very end does it appear to go fast and fast be gone. But that is yet so distant, what with the narrowness, that it deserves nor mention nor thought. Simply that the hour-glass has been turned, that the sand has begun to run."

From Doctor Faustus.
