Stargate

Colonel Robert Walker emerged on the other side of the gate from the Delta Site.  He was followed almost immediately by Master Sergeant Gordon O'Neil and Staff Sergeant Hector Jones, and then by Second Lieutenant Katrina Logan and Warrant Officer 2 Logan Kale.  Walker lowered his M-4 a little when it was clear there was no immediate danger.  He turned and nodded to O'Neil, motioning to fan out to the right.  The Master Sergeant confirmed, and after checking their respective areas, the team came together around 30 yards from the Stargate.

Just like the other times, Gordy put his right foot out and fell forward, feeling the blue liquid overtake him.  The next sensation that the sniper felt though was the rush of every molecule in his body traveling over thousands of light years in mere seconds.  The team emerged on the other side, in some bug infested swamp of a planet, and instantly secured the area around the stargate.  Gordy's converted M4 raised as he exited the gate, eyes scanning his surroundings.  Even while he scanned over the right side, the medic knew that Jones was covering the left.  It was always beneficial when two D-Boys worked together, even when they were from different squadrons.

When Walker gave him the look, Gordon returned a nod and flanked out to the right to check that area.  With his rifle in a ready-position, the former sniper covered ground quickly while at the same time scanning for any sign of a hostile presence.  Thankfully none was evident, and so in minutes he returned to where his team was grouped near the stargate.

Walker spoke up quietly, "As you all heard from the briefing, this is the third enemy stronghold we have visited.  We have no clue what we will encounter, but the main objective is to stay undetected.  Do not under any circumstances engage the enemy without my express order."

O'Neil listened intently to the 'pre-game speech,' knowing that this was a serious mission.  Any slip-up could force the team into a firefight with hostile forces, most likely a deadly one at that.  They needed to go over how to approach this.  While Gordy was bred to take a hostile positing by force, he was also taught how to take one with subtlety.  Here, the second option seemed like the better choice, and as the team started off into the marshes he was already thinking over a possible entry plan.

Walker looked at the determined faces of his team.  Nearly three weeks had passed since the fateful events on the opening night at the Delta Site, and the murder of Brigadier General Jax Connolly.  After several inquiries from expedition members, it was decided that the General's body would be preserved until the Daedalus arrived from Earth.  Shortly before the ship was due to arrive, a funeral and memorial service would be commenced, so the Delta Site personnel could say goodbye one last time.  The death of the General had been a shock to everyone, and an extremely shaky start for the expedition.

Robert and the team discussed tactics, and headed out over the wet ground towards the swampier marches, in the general direction of the enemy stronghold.

Ares Hand Compound
Shipyard Observation Deck

Hermes - "immortal god" - and member of the Council of Olympiads, stood on the observation deck overlooking the shipyard. Down below him, workers were putting the final touches on three new squadrons of Pentekonter-class star fighters; soon they would be joining the fleet of Ares Hand. Hermes signed. While he could think of a dozen worst assignments, but even then, overseeing the construction of Ares fleet did not rate too highly with him. It could be worst, I could have been sent to work for her.. he thought to himself, recalling his last encounter with Athena.

"Are you pleased with our progress?" asked a Taxiarkhos-ranked member of Ares army who had been waiting patiently to his left. "Indeed," replied Hermes. "Inform your men they'll receive a generous bonus if work is complete by sun down tomorrow." Hermes could see the glint in the commander’s eye upon hearing this. "Yes Hermes, I shall inform them immediately" the man said as he hurried off. Hermes leant on the rail. Things were so much more easier when we just enslaved them..

SD-3 had been travelling for a few minutes now, and Colonel Walker had been observing the chemistry of the team so far.  While four of them had grown comfortable with each other over the last few missions, Robert was a little concerned about Staff Sergeant Jones.  He had worked with many SF and Delta boys before, and found that many of them looked down on anyone not "on their level" as one SFC had mistakenly confronted him with before.  Hector seemed to be more concerned with keeping time with O'Neil than the entire team, and that was something none of them could afford.  However, only time would tell.  Let's hope this 'I'm better than you are' Delta attitude won't put any of my other people at risk Walker thought to himself.  No wonder non-Army troops working with Delta is a rare occurrence ... hard to work with them if they think you're not up to speed like they are.

As the team moved out across the marshes, Gordon secured the medical pack that he was carrying by connecting the two clips.  The strap wrapped around him, securing an inch or so above his waist as to make sure that the bag on his back didn't bounce too much during a possible sprint.  While wandering through the vegetation, O'Neil stayed to the right of the Colonel covering that side of the formation while traveling a few feet from the group at the same time.  While moving through the swamps, Gordy always liked a unit that was spread out, one that could cover more areas in a firefight.  Thankfully though no hostile forces were present on their journey, and so the group made it through the marshes and onto solid ground.

Walker held up a hand to stop the team, Logan being closest.  The Colonel made his way to the top of a large mound stretching about a mile in each direction.  He pulled out his scope and looked through it, seeing a gigantic structure about ten klicks in the distance.  When Jackal put his right hand up in a clenched fist, Gordon dropped to his right knee and pulled the stock of his M4 tighter into his shoulder.  After a few seconds though, he noticed the colonel waving for him to get to the apex of the large mound.  Without a second thought, the master sergeant covered the ground in a quick manner before dropping in a prone position next to the CO. "What do we have sir?" Gordy inquired.  Walker motioned for Gordy to come up and look throught the scope, and to the rest of the team to get to the top.  Walker nodded, "Doesn't look too inviting Sergeant ... "

As he answered the question, Gordy peered down the scope he was using and quickly scanned the enemy fortress.  The large stone works reminded the young man of the battlements stretched across Normandy.  "Well I doubt they'll be rolling out the welcome mat, even if we do show up with cookies."  The medic once more glared through the scope and shook his head as the base loomed in front of him.  "Scouting close to the wall will be hard.  Our best bet is to wait for sundown."

Robert nodded and said, "Great minds think alike, O'Neil."  He started down to the rest of the team and addressed them.

"OK people we're gonna hang around till sundown," he said to the others, before continuing, "This is by far the largest stronghold we've encountered, and the others were manned by tiny scout patrols, no real threat.  This is obviously something big, but we can't afford exposure too soon.  Make camp and we'll scout around for a while, but let's not wander too far from home eh kids?"

Walker then turned to Jones and ordered, "Sergeant, you've got first watch.  Take your eyes up there and keep an eye on the base.  Lt. Logan, you go up with him."  The two acknowledged the order, and Kat took the lead up the hill.

Turning back to the remaining people, Robert said, "Mr. Kale, you scout out to the east and see if we've got anything else to worry about."  Kale acknowledged and headed in that direction.

When Gordy turned to him, the Colonel spoke, "O'Neil, you stay with me for now.  Relax, you'll relieve Jones in a few hours."
