Title: NEW mapwalking records!!
Post by: jim360 on June 30, 2011, 02:17:41 PM
OK, so I was a bit bored of time trialling in a hog all the time...

All of these times show how fast you can complete a lap when legally(!) walking the map - so that means there's no infinity time shown* as you can never walk that map. Often teleports have been used and the route may sometimes even be only possible with an overshield or good jumping techniques.

Anyway, here goes - format is map, (rough description of route).

Gephyrophobia (round top, picking up overshield, jumping down at 4th nav):

Blood Gulch (use tele at blue base):

Timberland (tracking the hog route all the way):

Danger canyon (tunnels used after both base navs):

Ice fields (teles taken to get to centre when going from blue --> red and red--> score):

Death Island (same route as when driving):

Sidewinder (tele's used - note that this is the way you have to do it in scrims anyway):

Why not try and beat these yourself? On second thoughts, maybe not a good idea...

The other thing this little exercise suggests is that a hog is only about 3 times faster than a Spartan on foot! (From death island time, when the hog route and walking route are pretty well exactly the same).

*for the record, it took me 284 seconds to walk infinity normal navs without using tele's.

That's a fun change of things! Sounds like you were bored... :P

three60 doesn't get bored, he gets thinking and comes up with these crazy schemes. Nice one 360! ¬_¬

Wow, that's actually pretty cool. Those times are all surprisingly short, I thought they would be a lot longer.

I tried Gephy in my own LAN server (so no lag):

I wonder if you go faster or slower when you jump? I figured I'd go faster if I kept my feet on the ground, but did jump on the ramps. Strategic jumping I guess.

Anyway, new Gephy mapwalking record. Got a full second on ya, but don't worry:

My times are as lucky
as lucky can be!

Well, maybe a little skillful, I'm an awesome mapwalker ;D

Gosh Jane, it doesn't always have to be a contest, ya know. We all know how competitive you are ;o

I got bored and figured out that a hog effectively moves approximately 3.15 times faster than a walker across normal flat terrain.
[...]

I think it's a little more than 3.  That's like being run over and shot at by each enemy hog THREE TIMES before completing a lap.  Of course, walking on foot with a rocket launcher and/or using tele's helps a lot.  =]

Maybe you can walk Sidewinder to blue or maybe even red base, but Death Island... ew....

@Jane - I seem to remember doing some testing on that before, and finding out that when you're jumping along constantly (holding down W and spacebar) vs running along the ground (just holding W) you go the same speed.

If my vast experience of racing has taught me one thing, it's that jumping does make you go faster.

Does someone mind doing death island twice on foot please?  Do once jumping and once without, and time both of them.  I'm seriously curious!

I walked death island all the way round without jumping and did a 177.2 lap. So I'd say that jumping and walking are the same speed. Jumping just feels faster.

Jumping is faster uphill, but it feels slower regularly I think.

Someone told me that walking backwards is faster.  Something to try out, especially since it'll be much harder.

Nope, if you move at a rate of 2.25 units going forward, you only move at a rate of 2 units going backward or strafing, so it's slightly slower.

I think he was talking about Ocarina of Time
