GIS Dissertation
« on: January 08, 2014, 09:05:12 AM »
Hit a bit of a troubling situation in my 3rd year of university. One of the modules consists solely of a Dissertation. Because I do Geography and G.I.S my dissertation has to incorporate G.I.S (Geographical Information Systems).

Only recently, having been a good third of the way though my lecturer has turned round and said that my original idea of 'How modern advancements in GIS has aided in gathering Landuse data in the UK' is too vague and unfeasible.

I'm now stuck at what else I can do a dissertation on. I do need to find data to create maps, graphs and charts as part of the data collection where I can build the majority of my discussion. But of course 'relevant' and 'useable' data is extremely hard to find on the internet.

Baring in mind I use ArcMap (can use MapWindows), and all of the Arc tools, does anyone have any suggestions of what my new dissertation title should be and what data is easily available and can have a lot of implications.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Having thus ruled that your first efforts were doomed to failure, did the lecturer not then follow up with a suggestion of what you might do instead?

Short of that, are there no friends/ fellow students/ postgrads from the same course who might have some suggestions? Really it's the sort of thing that probably requires specialist experience to offer any useful advice.
Check out my Short introduction... corner and my "Historical figures who should perhaps be better-known" thread!!

Could you pick a specific advancement in GIS and show how it has advanced the gathering of land use data? That would retain your original idea while making it less vague and more feasible. Plus you get to pick a cool technology that may be very interesting for going in-depth.
