Title: "Britons believe the hills are alive with haggis"
Post by: BFM_JANE on April 25, 2010, 03:25:07 PM

Reuters, Apr 23, 2010:

LONDON - One in five people in Britain thinks that haggis, the traditional Scottish dish made from the lung, liver and heart of a sheep, is an animal that roams the Highlands, according to a survey on Friday.

Commissioned by the online takeaway food service Just-Eat.co.uk, the survey found that 18 percent of Britons believe that haggis is a hilltop-dwelling animal.

Another 15 percent said it is a Scottish musical instrument while 4 percent admitted to thinking it was a character from Harry Potter.

The survey questioned 1,623 people across Britain to see how well they were acquainted with traditional Scottish food.

Even 14 percent of the 781 Scottish people polled said they did not know what haggis was.

This is why people who carry out these types of surveys should be locked away in a padded cell, with one of those nice coats, with the sleeves that tie up in the back. Probably like myself the people who were asked these questions were fed up being pestered, and decided to become creative with their answers.
Anyway, a little known fact about the Highland Haggis, is that it has evolved legs which are longer on one side of its body, than the other, to mitigate the effect of standing on the side of mountains. This is not to be confused with the more common lowland Tartan Haggis, which has evolved, a coat which comes in many differing patterns. Of course not to forget the 'Hoots Mon' Haggis, which due cold in the upper north of Scotland has developed an elongated snout, and its sound may be confused to that of bag pipes.

Don't let yourself get confused - the Haggis IS an animal, and those nasty people just want to make us believe it isn't. But it is, and here's the proof:
