Title: ASK HERE: ALL Ventrilo-related Questions
Post by: BFM_Chaindog on July 28, 2007, 03:19:21 PM
« Thread Started by MrMxyzptlk (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=91) on Jan 31, 2006, 5:07am »

NOTE: Once you have downloaded (the correct version of!) Ventrilo (http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php), read and follow their instructions on installation and setup (http://www.ventrilo.com/setup.php) before performing any of the following steps.

[For answers to other common Ventrilo questions, please scan through this thread for posts containing yellow headlines.]

FAQ: How to setup VOX & mute in Vent(rilo)
----------------------------------------------------------
Here are instructions on how to set up the VOX (voice activation) capability in vent instead of using the push-to-talk key:

[These instructions work for Ventrilo version 3.0.8, which is the current version as of this update. They worked for version 3.0.1 as well, but you might as well use the current version!]

Click the "Setup..." button in the right-hand menu of buttons.

Assure that the "Voice" tab is selected.

UNcheck the "Use Push-To-Talk Hotkey" box.

Select a "Silence Time" of <= 2 secs, and a "Sensitivity" of, say 30 for a start.

Now test your mic input & VOX sensitivity setting, and tweak as needed by doing the following:

Select "Speex" in the "Codec" pulldown (it's the one that BFM uses, cuz it's the only one supported on the Mac! ;) ) and leave "Format" at default.

Click the "Monitor" button and talk into your mic'. (FYI: A headset mike should be w/in 1" of your lower lip, just below or off slightly to side, and you should NOT be able to touch it by "kissing" with your lips.)

A stream of 'volume levels' numbers will scroll by, where the # represents the 'volume level' of the input. Say a few words quietly, sniff, and stuff like that to see what the highest # is when you make such sounds.

Select the "Monitor" button again to stop the stream.

Then adjust your Sensitivity setting to a few above that # from above. (Like maybe 5 above. This # varies widely for various systems & mic's.)

Now test your settings from above:
Select the "Test" button and speak as if your were on vent. When the input gets above the input Sensitivity setting "-- Begin --" will appear, and when you're silent long enough (per your set "Silence Time") "-- End --" will appear, and what you said will be played back as others will hear you on vent.

End the test by selecting the "Test" button once more.

Now play with any settings you think need it, and use the "Monitor" and "Test" features to check out that your VOX setting are okay-doky! (And then you can close the Setup window by selecting "OK".)

Finally: "What do I do when I want to mute my mike and scream at a child/sibling/spouse off-vent?" you ask? :)

Well, it's simple, but confusing (and this may not work on a Mac....)

Here's how to set a Key Binding for the "Mute Microphone" function in vent:
Select the funky arrow thingy button ( -> ) to the far right of the "Bindings" item on the main vent menu.

(Unless you know what you're doing, just modify the "default" Bind....) Select "Toggle Mute Microphone" from the "Function" pull-down menu. Then click in the "Bind Key" box. It should say "MOUSE1" or some such. Important: Now touch the key on your keyboard that you want to hit to toggle your mike! (Hint: I'm right-handed, so I use the large "+" key on the right-hand numeric keypad to the far right of most keyboards. This allows me to whack it with my thumb without breaking stride at all in-game.... Of course, again, 'your mileage may vary'!!)  Be careful to chose a key that is not in use for anything else you're doing, too!

Now select the "Add" button to create that "(key) bind" (in your "default" Bind set.)

Select "OK" to quit the Bind Setup window, and assure that "default" is selected for the "BindingS" field on the main vent window.

Now try your "toggle Mute Microphone" key and watch the "Mute Microphone/Binds" checkbox at the bottom of the main vent window to see that it's working!

Viola!

Finally, to have the Computer Voice tell you your mute state every change:

Select the "Setup" button in the right-hand list of menu buttons, then select the "Events" tab, and select "Text-to-speech" to the right of "Toggle mute microphone."

Select "OK" button to exit Setup.

Ventrilo will now describe the state of your microphone each time you un/mute it with your assigned un/mute key!

First check that you can hear NON-VENTRILO sounds okay, and if so, then the problem is likely your ventrilo "inbound" volume setting is too low/muted.

I don't have Ventrilo in front of me to check this, so it might be off a bit:...

0) Start ventrilo & select the "Setup..." button on the right.

1) Under the default ("Voice"?) tab, check the "Inbound" volume is NOT all the way to the left (-10?) or otherwise too low.  If it is, raise it in SMALL INCREMENTS - DO NOT SET IT UP A LOT ALL AT ONCE, and check sound again.

... Hope I got those right....

GL!

Ventrillo was down earlier this morning.

It was back up around an hour later after it crashed.

You should be able to get on now.

when i put the :4193 on the end of the ip that is

if i leave it off it send me to some weird test server in georgia or somethin... i'm thinkin wrong ip?? i have checked it many times and the one shown at http://www.bfmracing.net/ is the one in my vent...
Title: Re: ASK HERE: ALL Ventrilo-related Questions

You need to put the port number (the 4193 WITHOUT the colon ":") in the box labelled "Port number", and leave it OFF the IP portion (everything UP TO BUT NOT INCLUDING the colon ":"), just like the Quick Setup Instructions (http://www.ventrilo.com/setup.php) tell you to (steps 8-10.)

More good stuff:

How to Troubleshoot Microphone Problems:

First, bring up the Windows "Sound Recorder:"
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Sound Recorder

Now try to "see" your voice/any sound show up as a vibration of the straight green line by clicking on the Red circle (Record) and speaking into your microphone.
(Click the black square to stop recording.  Then the right-pointing arrow to playback your recording.  When assured that it's all working correctly, dismiss Sound Recorder by clicking the red "X" in upper-right corner.)

Did the line wiggle AT ALL?

If not, then:

See?  Obviously (at this point) it has nothing to do with Ventrilo!  (Hint: Your sound isn't working IN WINDOWS!)

First, assure that the "Mute" switch on your microphone is NOT muting it, then

Check your cables, then
check your cables, then
check your connections, then

Assure that the microphone is enabled in Volume Control:
- RIGHT-click the little speaker icon in your toolbar (far right)
- Select "Open Volume Control"
- Select "Options -> Properties" from the menu
- Select the "Recording" radio button & assure that the checkbox in front of "Microphone" is enabled.  Then select the "OK" button
- Assure that the checkbox in the "Microphone" section is THE ONLY ONE CHECKED.
- Select the "X" in the upper-right to dismiss the window

Now try Sound Recorder again....

This just came up elsewhere and it made me realize that I've never typed this in here before now ( :o ) so I'm "copying " it here:

If you're getting unwanted echo then you probably have one or both of the following two settings that need to be corrected:

- In Volume Control -> Playback: "Microphone" is enabled.  Mute it.

- In Volume Control -> Recording: Assure that only "Microphone" is selected, not e.g. "Stereo Mix" (actual wording varies between diff sound cards.)

I suggest that you bring up both sets of slider panels with every item selected so that you can see what else might be the problem, and then go back to the (smaller, useable) slider set(s) that you want to usually see when you bring up the slider panel thereafter....  (Or just write down the names of the ones that were selected in each slider set at the start and put things back as they were when finished... except for the changes mentioned above that is!!! >Doh!< )

[New!: Read this also if you can't get your mic to get loud enough to be heard! Follow the same instructions, but do the text in GREEN instead....]

If you're getting distortion and/or crackling sounds when you talk on vent (um, that is, when ppl tell you you are!) then you probably have your Gain (aka "boost") turned on in Windows.  See if the following steps correct the problem (Windows XP):

- Double-click the speaker icon in your taskbar notification area.  (Usu. lower right corner.) This brings up the Volume Control panel of sliders.
- Select Options -> and if Advanced Controls does not have a checkmark in front of it, select it.
- Select Options -> Properties, and then select the "Recording" radio button.
- Assure that there is a checkmark in the box in front of "Microphone."
-Select "OK" button to dismiss the Properties popup.
- Now select the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the Microphone section of the Recording Control window.
- [CHECK]UNCHECK the box for "Mic Boost" in the "Other Controls" pane of the "Advanced Controls for Microphone" popup.  (This [EN]DISables a 20dB gain on your mic input, you see....)
-Select the "Close" button.

- Now move the slider in the Microphone section one mark below its topmost setting, and either test you volume with someone on vent, or follow the instructions in the 1st post to set your volume level.
NOTE: that there are TWO volume controls that can be adhusted to set your microphone volume: The slider in the Recording Control window, and within Ventrilo -> Setup... -> Voice tab, the "Outbound" slider in the "Amplifiers" pane.  (One obviously effects all uses of your microphone on your computer, the other only modifies it within vent....), then "X" (upper-right corner) to dismiss the Recording Controls popup.

For Vista, to disable the Mic Boost, do the following:
- Right-click on the speaker icon in your system tray and select Recording Devices
- Select the Microphone/Headset you want to adjust
- Click Properties button
- In the popup window, click on Custom Tab and untick the box that says "AGC"  (Automatic Gain Control I assume)
- Click OK on both windows
Let me know if anything is wrong with the above, worked for me ~ Kiwi

Also, if you're not using the correct version of ventrilo you can get all kinds of strange sounds/effects.

I am not really an expert but it sounds like you would need to have either two different computers logged into the server at one time or at least two different vent accounts logged in at the same time from the same computer.  One account for the music and one account for your voice.  Logging in with different accounts from different computers would work and would probably be the easiest way.  If that is not an option for you then you would have to enable the multi-client feature in vent so that you could log in with two accounts at the same time from the same computer.

As far as I know x-fire you can only talk to one person at a time.  Vent can be much much more.  And... x-fire stinks for chatting imo  :P :P

No, you can do group voice chats with xfire.

Anyway, ventrilo is more effective, as it's ONLY a voice communication system, and xfire has many other benefits OTHER THAN its voice support. (Screenies, game-stats, clan sites, file xfer, ....) It's voice support is pretty clunky compared to TS & ventrilo, too.

Try clicking on the taskbar "icon!"  ::)

If that doesn't do it (I'm hoping you've already tried that!  ;D ) then it's probably in The Windows Twilight Zone Of Off-Screen Pixels!!  (Oh NOEZ!!! Say it ain't SO!)

This happens when Windows - for unknown reasons - "leaves" a window at a location OUTSIDE YOUR VISIBLE VIEWING SPACE. (Ya, pretty dumb thing to do, I know.... Psssh! It's WINDOZE!)

It's tricky to do, but here's How To Recover An Off-Screen Window:

RIGHT AFTER YOU START UP VENTRILO....:

Press <ALT>+<SPACEBAR>. This will open the regular Windows menu for "Move the (currently-focussed) window" to another place. (If, when you press <ALT>+<SPACEBAR>, you cannot see the Window, just press the <DOWN ARROW> once and then <ENTER>.) You can now use the arrow keys to move the window to a position where you can see it.

'Hope this does the trick!

When you join the server, it says what ever you phonetic is".....has connected" Same with you moving in and out of a channel. You can change it by clicking the -> by your username, and below your username are some boxes, blank by default, one says phonetic ________[Play] Whatever you put in the space will come up with when you join/leave server/channels.

I got a question about vent the other day. [I decided to put it in here in case the question ever occurs!]

Q: Can you change how loud or soft someone talks on ventrilo?

A: Yes! How? Right click on the person of which you'd like to change. Go to Misc. and then click on special effects. Under the available column, click on volume and hit add. When you hit add, a box should come up and allow you to change the volume of the selected person. If a box doesn't come up, and you have already added volume, simply double click on volume.

I'm wondering if there's a way to bind channels to a hotkey so I can move around without having to A) ask an officer to move me or B) Alt-Tab out of Halo and move myself. I'd just need it for pretty much the Race Room and the KOS room.
Title: Re: ASK HERE: ALL Ventrilo-related Questions

Yup there is, Compdude. Underneath the Username/Details sections at the top of the window, you can open up the "BINDINGS" tab.

You'll have to play around with them though as I only know how to make text-to-speech bindings.

Also FYI, bindings are disabled in MANY of the channels on BFM vent because of misuse/abuse of them is possible...The Racing Room is one of them.

Aw too bad. I understand how they could be abused though. I can see some people flipping back and forth between channels quickly resulting in a never-ending stream of Microsoft Sam.

Yep.

But FYI: You can do pretty-much anything with the binding mechanism available in Ventrilo! (Most of which can lead to annoying abuses!  ::) )

For no reason I can find all the sudden Theres tons of feedback whenever I talk on vent. Normally I just use the mic and listen with the huge speakers I've got hooked up. I hate headphones on my ears but I tryed them and that didnt change a thing. Ben, Taco and Taipan tryed to help but we cant figure it out. I didnt change any settings and I dont think Johnny did either. The only thing I cant think of is maybe something he downloaded jiggered something, but I cant find it. Any Ideas? :bang:

Didn't happen to have just installed Skype or the likes, did you?

Internet "phone" SW is well-known to mess up Ventrilo, sometime to the point of being downright incompatible!  (Although the new 3.x version of Ventrilo now allows for settings manipulation to be done to allow them to "play" together fairly well now, but you have to do SOMETHING to your Ventrilo settings, that's for sure!

If you DID install something new like that, I suggest that you go to the Ventrilo website (http://www.ventrilo.com/) and see what you can find about it....

Ok, I got on vent, and decided I wanted to move my vent to the other side of the screen. Well, instead of just moving it to the side of the screen, I took it completely off of the screen. Is there anyway to get it back to where I can see it without uninstalling and re-installing?

Solution: I plugged my laptop into our flat screen tv, which allowed me to actually see the extended desktop. I don't know how I got vent over there in the first place, lol.

In the future, do this to "recover" lost-off-screen windows. (It happens to me all the time with stoopid Windows Photo Viewer....)

0) Try to assure that the window in question has "focus." I.e. It is selected somehow.

1) Press <ALT>+<SPACEBAR>. This will open the regular Windows menu for moving the window to another place. If, when you press <ALT>+<SPACEBAR>, you cannot see the Window, you only see the popup menu, press <DOWN ARROW> once and then <ENTER>.

2) Now you can use the arrow keys to move the window to a position where you can see it.

You might want to exit the window NOW, and restart the application to assure that it remembers the new ON-SCREEN position tho!

Voila!

You can set up what is called a hotkey, basically when you push that button, it "mutes and unmutes" your microphone input with vent.
Basically, we will get it to work don't worry. Theres even a way to make a key to mute your mic completely on vent =]

Hey guys can i get a brief sumary on how to join or start venttrillo servers?

To JOIN an existing Ventrilo server, see the ("Client") instructions link in first line of the first post in this thread (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php/topic,753.0.html).

Also, see this tutorial (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php/topic,35.0.html) which has additional, somewhat more descriptive/specific instructions, too.

To install and start YOUR OWN Ventrilo server, well, that's a bit more involved, but the instructions are on that same Ventrilo page, under "Server...."

OK, I was reading the thread (I did apply, and if I ever decide I want to use ventrilio, it's good to know this stuff), and I saw how Skype and similar programs can mess it up.

What if Skype isn't actually running? I don't use it often enough to put it in my "Internet Comminucations" RocketDock stack.

To the best of my knowledge, it only needs to be installed to be a conflict/problem. It CAN be worked around, tho, by setting the Input Device in Ventrilo to your actual HW audio device, and setting Skype to use DirectSound Input....

Heh, I just now got around to setting Skype up like that (remember, be prepared, because those zombies AREN'T going to kill themselves!), and I encountered a problem.

Skype and/or Vista has foiled our plans by not showing "DirectSound Input"

Since Mxy doesnt speek Vista, Ill do my best,I know that Ventrilo does show DirectSound Input and im running on Vista, Premium(basic does as well), so i am assuming that Skype is your problem, possibly take a look at some forums for skype or some FaQ's.

if it's Ventrilo that's "saying" that, then you need to confirm that you still have an account on the new BFM Ventrilo server with an officer (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php?action=staff) (Capt. or above)....

Yes, BFM members, prospective members (once they reach a certain point in the recruitment process,) and a few long-time-guests/family members.

If you've applied for recruitment they will let you know when the time comes to give you vent access.

Yeah, it's basically doing 3-way over the phone, only sometimes it can be 40-way  ::).  Since it is over the internet, it can be a bit laggy, but the lag usually is only about 50 milliseconds or so.

Voila!

Double

Just upgraded my graphics drivers and had the very same problem with various windows, but Vent was the worst to retrieve, i never thought to use my arrow keys!

Argh! I ended up going into the configurations setting.ini file for vent and deleting the "MainLocSize=#,#,#,#" line out. Basically that just resets the windows position to the center of the screen but flamin' nora... Spent a good 30 mins searching and learning how to do it...

Even though you said that you checked your settings....:

Open Ventrilo, select the Setup button, then Speech tab....

Is "Play Text-to-speech message sent by other users" checked, and is the volume on something other than "a real low number?"

Start -> Control Panel -> Speech to bring up the Speech Properties window, then click on the Preview Voice button and see if that works.

Also, check that "Use the default output device" is selected within the Text to Speech Sound Output Settings window under the "Audio Output" button. (And that you've got "Use DirectSound Device" set in both Ventrilo settings....)

Darkfyr: Use the same vent info.  Same name, server IP and port, password, same everything, and it should work.  If not then vent did something with your account, not your computer.

ColWalker: Not sure what you mean.  If you mean on Windows' Control panel, then I have Anna running, and there's not much else I can change.  On the advanced button, I have it set to "use preferred audio output device."
If you mean on vent, then on the events tab I have everything at TTS.  On the speech tab I have it play TTS messages sent by other users, text filter lvl 2, and phonetic if available.

I hope that helped.

Hello all.
I am having problems with my mics.  Yes, both of my mics are having problems.
The problems comes from the point I am "loud" at times, and there is always static in the background, or, I cannot be heard at all.

The static I can say is most likely from my laptop. With its drives spinning, it makes a constant whine, and this is most likely the problem.  The mics are picking this sound up and putting it through. (So much for a headset mic that filters background noise  :bang: :bang:)

If someone could help me here, I would appreciate it.

First off, check/do all the things in this earlier post in this thread (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php?topic=753.msg35332#msg35332) to assure that you do NOT have "mic boost" set if you can record/hear sound through your mic that is at a good level without "mic boost" enabled.

Second: Make sure you're using version 3.0.4 (http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php) of the correct ventrilo client.

1. it is in the correct socket and
2. it is in properly

Does your headset have its own volume control? I know of these green and pink plugs that you speak of (I have them as well, except the headset mic broke so I use my built in one), and my type of headset has a volume control about half way down the wire. If it's low or off that could be your issue.

Make use of Front Panel Audio ports:
Also
Rear-panel speaker port doesn't work:

If you have Front Panel audio plugs I suggest that you use them for a headset.

Why?

Because they sometimes have the feature where they'll MUTE THE REAR-PANEL OUTPUTS when you plug in to the front ports! (Note that sometimes the mute feature is there, sometimes it's not, and sometimes it settable.  It depends on the sound chipset and mobo manufacturer....)

That way you can keep your speakers set up and silence them when you go to play a game with your headset by simply plugging them in the front!

P.S. So if you CURRENTLY have your headset plugged in to the REAR panel ports and you plug something - like some other speakers - into your FRONT PANEL (headset) port... Well, you've just MUTED YOUR (rear-panel-connected) HEADSET!

I actually did that last night and it worked, I got sound into my headphones.

But, I also get the halo game sounds in my headphones as well....

Is there any way I can have the halo sounds come out of my computer speakers and have the vent come through my headphones only?

I know I could do that with Teamspeak but I am new to Vent and don't know if that feature is available.

Plus, I still get a muffled sound everyone says and my Outbound is set at -8.  I might just have to pick up a new headset.

How do you do that?

Not if I turn the halo up just a notch, it wouldnt interfere with vent.

When I have both sounds through my headphones, I canot hear anyone talk thats why I wanted to try it the other way.
Title: Re: ASK HERE: ALL Ventrilo-related Questions

In Ventrilo select the audio device where the headphones are plugged in as the output, then in the Control Panel set the default audio device to the speakers. Then Halo and everything else will sound out of your speakers, but Vent will go through the headset because of the options you set on it in Vent... that should work.

Another alternative is just to turn your Halo down or turn Vent up. I have Vent at normal audio settings but run Halo at 6/10 across the sound levels so I can hear Vent.

Whichever works for you.

Note that you can always check the CURRENT status of BFM's ventrilo server via the link on their website ( www.bfmracing.net ) in the right-hand "status" menu, by clicking on the listed IP address for their Ventrilo server (http://bfmracing.net/vent.php).

The Right Honourable Mxyzptlk has suggested that I simply change key to a none-shift/ctrl/alt key to avoid 'sticky' keys, but other people have been using shift for months and hoad no such problems. ALso, despite having had vent for about four months, this has only been happening for about the last two. In fact, I could say it might have started once I got my small tags, but that's just a guess.

Any ideas? Major Cool, I'm looking in your direction: you said you might know how to fix it....

Well, just off the top of my head I'd say that you should avoid using any "stateful keys" - such as <Shift>, <Ctrl>, or <Alt> - for you hotkeys!  ::)

 :P

Secondly, I'd like to ask: Are you using a WIRELESS KEYBOARD, perhaps??

Nope, USB port keyboard. To give some mroe detail: Windows XP; Sticky Keys are DISABLED. Keyboard functioning normally in every way except this.

We really only have enough spots for members.  You could PM one of the generals and ask.  But at this time I'm sure the answer would be sorry, but no room.

Okay, so I've noticed on vent everyone seems to be too low of a volume for me. I kept increasing everyone's individual volume by right clicking > miscellaneous > ? > volume or something (I don't know the full path). I'm pretty sure there's an easier way to change the whole output volume overall. I'm assuming this is in setup and I just increase the Inbound and Outbound bars to a higher setting. If that's right, which one is it?

Of course I know this won't fine tune it to everyone's different level of voice, but for starters I think the majority volume should be increased; how to do so in vent is where I'm stumped. Not a very user-friendly interface. :eyebrow:

I'm sure this is already somewhere on the forums, probably even in this thread. I'm just not one to dig up old posts ...Okay, I admit it. I just want more posts.

Thanks! Decoy. :)

Dr Decoy.

Right click on the channel where everybody is to quiet, go to Misc., then go turn up the whole channel itself.

Or, you can just turn up the volume on your computer. :D
Title: Re: ASK HERE: ALL Ventrilo-related Questions
Post by: MrMxyzptlk on July 25, 2009, 08:09:31 PM

Turn up your INBOUND volume to make what you hear (in from outside).

Turn up OUTBOUND to make yourself louder to others.

Volume balance between everything else on your computer is actually quite a test of one's juggling ability: You'll have to muck with several volumes until you get a good balance.

My advice on the subject, tho, is this: You'll run into several things that do NOT have their own volume controls, for which the only way to adjust them is through the main/primary volume control offered by Windows itself.  Find/run into one of those, and adjust your main volume accordingly. THEN and only then go to work on adjusting the volumes of things throughout your computer one at a time.

Oh, and most of this all goes out the window once you've run into the volume diff's between your speakers and your headset!  ::) :bang:

(Another way to do this is to simply adjust the Windows volume for whatever it is that you use most often that makes sound and then go set the rest. (E.g. I've set mine so that when I play music (via Winamp) it's audible to me with Winamp's volume on the low side. That way I can boost everything up when/if I need to.)

Vent problem after Halo updated to 1.09?  I started having halo say that I needed admin access to install an update whenever I wanted to go to the lobby.  I could enter a game via direct IP.  I updated halo and now my vent will not allow me to speak unless it is the top window.  I can't play halo and talk at the same time now.  I am running Vista.

Thanks,
Mr. P

Situation solved.  Geek2 told me that I needed to run both Halo and Vent as an Admin.  Once I did that, it worked like it always did.

Yup.

I advise people to ALWAYS set "Run as Administrator" AND whatever applicable Compatibility Mode setting there is for any pre-Vista sw they install on a Vista machine....

(The same prolly goes for W7, too....)

First off, you will be notified when you can access our vent server.

Second, did you try the IP?  or "bfmracing.net?"  You will need to make sure the IP and port (numbers after the ":") are correct, which you can find them on the home page of our website.

Vent Lag Out!

I'm having lag issues when on Vent.  My usual ping is 94 but when playing halo my ping will jump to 16k plus whenever 2 or more people are talking over one another and 1k plus when anyone is talking.  Any ideas or settings I can change to help this?

Problem has been fixed.  Thx

OK, Vent problem here
Every time I log into vent it's ok, I can join any channels but as soon as I join a channel I have about 20 seconds before it lags me out. ie. I can hear everyone else in the channel and the PTT button looks like it works fine on my end, but no-one on vent can hear me although it looks fine and well to me. after about 5 mins or so, it'll sign me out for 8 secs and then sign me back in put me back into the channel I was in b4 and I have about another 30 secs b4 everyone's like "Hmmm, seems like Eragon's lagged out agian..."
 Can someone help me?

You can try resetting your LAN (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php?topic=19442.0), but ...

Ok what i meant by "vista" is my vista computer... people seem to be hearing me fine on that one without a whole bunch of static, even though I'm "quiet." I have gotten it to where at least some people can understand me... but most other people only hear a bunch static with an incredibly quiet voice, too quiet to understand... When i tried the sound recorder i could hear myself but i had to raise my voice a bit - more than you usually would, in order to hear it echoed back through the recorder to where i could understand what i had said almost perfectly.....

Still a bit unclear....

Are you saying that you're trying it on two different computers and trying to compare the differences??

If you're talking about vent on two different machines you're going to need to be a lot clearer about WHICH ONE has WHAT SPECIFIC PROBLEMS, please. (And all the differences between them, right down to the hardware....)

And then tell us which ONE you want to correct.

.

.

.

Then forget everything you want to tell us about the OTHER computer, and save yourself some time.

Title: Re: ASK HERE: ALL Ventrilo-related Questions

No, I am not trying it on two different computers to compare the difference.... I use two different computers to race.
In case one is not available I use the other.

I want to correct my XP computer..

Now, the differences between the two computers that I have.

1. Vista has many more upgrades and can work much better with Ventrilo, while XP has a limited amount of choices for some of its features... such as that I only have 2 choices for my input and output effects.. (voice set up tab in Ventrilo)

2. Vista is newer than my XP computer.

3. I have more choices of how I want my microphone to work on the Vista than on the XP (Admin privileges + program availability)

If there is anything else you need to know about my computer please PM me since it will probably get my attention faster than the tech section, and it will probably also allow me to ask my dad any other differences between them in very short order so that I can PM them back to you quickly. Therefore, saving you from getting confused by my posts, and talking with somebody who actually knows what he is doing.

EDIT: New mic fixed problem

[...]

...Then...

Step 0) COMPLETELY IGNORE THE VISTA MACHINE.  (Except maybe to confirm that the headset and mike work with WINDOWS SOUND RECORDER (and NOT with Ventrilo, which is irrelevant to it working on the XP machine....)

Step 1) Start an independent thread about this with this as the first post:

Quote
I can hear people on vent fine, but they cannot hear me, and even then they say I'm a bit quiet.

My machine is Windows XP, headset/mic proven to work fine with Windows Sound Recorder on another computer, and work fine to record/playback my voice via Windows Sound Recorder on the XP system, too.

Of course, only post that AFTER you've done the steps to PROVE those last two points!!

Ya, I heard him the other day.

Sounds to me like he has mic/sound system problems rather than ventrilo problems.

Chief should try recording his voice via that headset and playing it back using Windows Sound Recorder before we try anything else....

Have you tested to assure that this volume problem happens only in Ventrilo?  (I.e. How does it sound when you record and playback your voice with the Windows Sound Recorder?

Also, what have you got the ventrilo "Settings" -> "Voice" tab -> "Input Device" and "Output Device" set to? (And do you have BOTH of the "Use Direct Sound" check boxes checked?

Finally, what device is your "Hardware input mixer (Optional)" set to?  (Perhaps posting a screenshot of your Ventrilo Setup window would be best.... (Hint: Select the "Setup" window, then hold down the <ALT> key when taking the screenshot....)

You can always check the BFM Vent server status - and even who's IN IT ATM! - by going to the BFM website (http://bfmracing.net/) and clicking on the Vent IP in the right-hand menu.

(Hint: "No response from server." means any of: The Vent server is down, you cannot connect to it for some other reason, or the BFM folks have forgotten to update the website with a newer Vent IP  :siderofl: .   ;D )

Look under the "Events" tab under the "Setup" button.

Assure that "Users connect to server" and "Users disconnect from server" are set to "Custom."

Select the "OK" button and see if that fixes it.

And YES, it was from the LAST "old forums" not the two before that one!*

Anyway, what that means is that I CANNOT EDIT the first post to try to move some of the later advice into the first post for better use for y'all.

Mayhaps I should just restart ANOTHER Ventrilo thread and do that In its first post?

First things to check are your basic settings in Windows.  (I.e. Leave Ventrilo out of it for now, until you're sure it's working right in Windows.)

So:

One or both of the following two settings that need to be corrected:

- In Volume Control -> Playback: "Microphone" is enabled.  Mute it.

- In Volume Control -> Recording: Assure that only "Microphone" is selected, not e.g. "Stereo Mix" (actual wording varies between diff sound cards.)

If these steps don't fix it, then it's on to the Device settings in Ventrilo....
(We'll do there if we need to, because it really can't be done via the forums.  It needs to be done on ventrilo....)

Just started on vent Monday. Other players are saying my broadcasts are quiet. A few have said after a second or so there is static and can't understand what I am saying. Others on vent at the same time say they don't hear the static, but verify it is quiet.

I have vent inbound and outbound set at +10.

No problem for me hearing other players. I use headphones so there shouldn't be a feedback problem.

Any suggestions? The microphone I have is not a very expensive one. Would an upgrade on the mic be first step?

Thanks,
DeadMeat

You probably have a condenser mic, which needs "microphone boost."

Read down a bit in this post (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php/topic,753.msg35332.html#msg35332).

I was just wondering can someone (like me) that does not want to be recruited still get vent access? I know there is limited space on vent but figured it could not hurt to ask. I am around the servers a little again and figured why not stop in and say hi.

That's a question for the BFM Officers (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php/board,6.0.html), but I'm pretty sure no (more) guests can get BFM vent access....

Just wanted to make a post regarding the Overlay in Ventrilo. I'm currently using 3.0.8 x64 with Windows 7 64-bit. I was having issues with it and wanted to make sure that it was enabled so I could learn some of the "newer" members voices. Anyway, after searching on the internet the solution seems to be to ensure that your game resolution is the same as your desktop. Whether this means that you need to increase your in-game resolution or decrease your desktop resolution is your decision. Other than that... it worked just fine for me. = )

If you're wondering how to set a custom resolution in Halo, you can add -vidmode x1,x2,x3 to the properties tab, where x1 is your width, x2 = height, and x3 = refresh rate. I'm not sure if this will allow you to go to a higher resolution than is normally supported via the Halo settings.
