ATi Next Generation Cards presentation
« on: September 10, 2009, 06:12:51 PM »
Today (10th September or 11th September for us Aussies) sparked the first offical presentation of ATi's next Generation graphics cards code name "Evergreen" that use the new R800 GPU chips.

Within this Evergreen codename is the Cypress codename, more commonly refered to as the HD5870, which uses a GPU chip codenamed RV870 and sports 1600 stream processors clocked at 800MHz. 1600 stream processors is double that of HD4870's 800 stream processes theortically making the HD5870 card double the power of the HD4870. However in reality this number would probably be in the order of 60% performance gain with small performance gains after each driver update. Which is still a VERY impressive jump (Core 2 Quad to Core i7 was only about 10-20% max).

3 cards were introduced today on the USS Hornet (an aircraft carrier that fought durring the second world war, but now on display). The 3 card were the HD5850, HD5870 1GB and HD5870 2GB.

HD5850 1GB of GDDR5 memory will cost around $US299
HD5870 1GB of GDDR5 memory will cost around $US399
HD5870 2GB of GDDR5 memory will cost around $US449

As I said before the HD5870 will come with 1600 stream processors (twice HD4870) clocked at 800MHz. The chip will have as many as 2.1 billion transistors, where the HD4870 "only" had 956 million transistors. The GDDR5 memory will be clocked at an insane 1.3GHz (which is effectivly 5.2GHz for the GDDR5 memory in Quad mode). At full load it will comsume around 180W, but at idle it will drop down to as low as 27W making it the most efficent card at idle to date.

The release of ATi's flagship the HD5870X2 will be delayed by a month. The HD5870X2 is basically 2 HD5870's on a single board. Currently not just info about this card yet. The HD5850 and 5870 (1GB & 2GB) will be lauched on 22-23rd of September making the HD5870X2 being launched around October 23rd (very close to my birthday :P).

On to another interesting feature that ATi is going to release. "ATi's Eyefinity". This enables to use of up to 6 screens. ATi presented this with the game H.A.W.K on six screen with a crazy resolution of 5760x2400. Eyefinity enables either you to have 1 large array of "up to" 6 sixs or use a the computer to deliver various experiences for a group of people. "E.G. one can watch a movie on two displays, others can do whatever they like on other four."

Here are some amature pictures of the reference card of the HD5870 (Meaning stock cooler on it). http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15454/1/

It appears to have a similar cooler to the HD4870X2 which it uses a Centrifugal fan (so an air pump instead of a fan :P) . It does look massive though, but should be smaller then the HD4870X2. The exhaust hole is VERY small, but appears to have 2 intake holes for the air pump cooler. This is just the reference cooler on this card and companies like ASUS, Gigabyte, Sparkle will all put their own cooling variations on it. I am personally a bit worried about the cooling performance of this reference cooler, however ATi card have always been design to handle much higher tempreatures then Nvidia cards (note X1950XTX where it happily sits around 80 degrees C (176 degree's F)). However these high temps will affect the surrounding components in a case such as the CPU.

Should hopefully get some benchmarks from now the end of this month to see where these cards truely sit on the performance scale.

I might continue exploring other sites for some info or better yet a benchmark based review. From my guestimate HD5870 will walk all over the GTX 285, however just short of the "dual" GTX295. However when the HD5870X2 comes it will become the new performance crown. Nvidia have plans to release their GT300 based graphics cards as well, however due to poor manufacturing of the silcon die's these cards wont get released proably til Early 2010.

P.S. I am currious to see what is better HD5870 or HD4870X2.

Cheers

A what now?? A quad core duo??. So does that mean its a quad core, a dual core or 2 x quad core CPU's??

Also there are no CPU's in either the Core 2 family or the Core i7 family that have a default clock of 3.4GHz.

What is the CPU called, the memory called and the motherboard called? I am very curious now!

I believe there is an AMD processor that comes stock with a 3.4GHz

As yes the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition. Still doesnt match the Core i7's however gives all the Core 2 Family a flogging.

Looks like I was wrong with the "Up to" 6 monitors with ATi's Eyefinity lol. (Cough overkill)

I'm getting that processor, but the 940(or 945 or something in that area ) Black Edition. 24 MONITORS?!?!? :scrim: :liljawdrop:
That IS overkill, but some serious Multi-Tasking ability maybe? :haw: :XD:

Although the AMD processors do offer a pretty good Price vs Performance. I believe getting a Core i7 920 will be better because when new CPU's come out they will use the 1366 socket motherboard so you can upgrade without having to buy a whole new motherboard.

I dont know how long the AM3 socket motherboards from AMD will last before they have to change it again.

It is stupid to get a i7 940+ etc (excluding the extreme editions refer to note :P) because they are the same CPU as the i7 920, but factory overclocked with a higher mulitplier. Best to buy the 920 and just overclock it yourself then pay the premium.

Note: Extreme editions have an unlocked multiplier

Rightio

The HD5800 series got released today. The specs and reviews are up so now lets do some comparison to work out overall performance differences between current generation GPU's

This helps place where abouts the HD5870 sits on the performance scale of todays cards.

Games used: Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Call of Duty 5: World at War, Mass Effect, Crysis WARHEAD, Tom Clancy's HAWX, Anno 1404, Brothers in Arms: Hecks Highway, Dead Space.

Cards: HD5870 1GB, GTX 285, HD4870X2 and the current performance leader the GTX 295.

NOTE: The HD4870X2 and the GTX 295 are actually 2 graphics card in 1, while the HD5870 and GTX 285 are just a single card, a little unfair, but we are looking at "CARD" performance. The HD5870X2 will be released next month or November.

Everything is in FPS

Far Cry 2

GTX 295 - 78
HD5870 - 59
GTX 285 - 50
HD4870X2 - 49

Anno 1404

GTX 295 - 67
HD5870 - 76
GTX 285 - 48
HD4870X2 - 65

Call of Duty 5: World at War

GTX 295 - 80
HD5870 - 68
GTX 285 - 58
HD4870X2 - 74

Tom Clancy's HAWX

GTX 295 - 73
HD5870 - 77
GTX 285 - 55
HD4870X2 - 81

Crysis WARHEAD

GTX 295 - 51
HD5870 - 45
GTX 285 - 35
HD4870X2 - 41

Mass Effect

GTX 295 - 146
HD5870 - 112
GTX 285 - 98
HD4870X2 - 132

Dead Space

GTX 295 - 214
HD5870 - 178
GTX 285 - 144
HD4870X2 - 104

Fallout 3

GTX 295 - 83
HD5870 - 77
GTX 285 - 61
HD4870X2 - 90

Brothers in Arms: Heck's Highway

GTX 295 - 106
HD5870 - 111
GTX 285 - 74
HD4870X2 - 92

As you can see different graphics card perform differently in different games. The HD4870X2 even beat both the GTX 295 and HD5870 in Fall out 3 and Hawk.

Over all compared to the HD5870 here is the percentage performances

GTX 295 - 11.11%
HD5870 - 0%
GTX 285 - -20.28%
HD4870X2 - -5.58%

So the GTX 295 overall still holds the performance crown by 11.11% over the HD5870.

Lets look at the proper 3D Mark benchmarks to see what percentage difference they say over the HD5870:

3D Mark Vantage (DX10)

GTX 295 - 18656      = 16.28%
HD5870 - 16044      = 0%
GTX 285 - 11942      = -25.57%
HD4870X2 - 15382   = - 4.13

Those are rather close so I think my comparison looks fairly accurate.

Note; The HD5870X2 is still to be released. If the HD5870X2 is 60% better over the HD5870 then I estimate it to be around 43-50% better then the GTX 295.

Also note Nvidia is still to release their GT300 based cards which is rumored to be more powerful then the HD5800 series, however they are not getting released til sometime next year.

Nvidia GT300 specs are out

# 3.0 billion transistors
# 40nm TSMC
# 384-bit memory interface
# 512 shader cores [renamed into CUDA Cores]
# 32 CUDA cores per Shader Cluster
# 1MB L1 cache memory [divided into 16KB Cache - Shared Memory]
# 768KB L2 unified cache memory
# Up to 6GB GDDR5 memory
# Half Speed IEEE 754 Double Precision

From the look of it seems like ATi might get burned this round. However if that is true and the GT300 as "Up to" 6GB of GDDR5, then I would expect these cards to cost a few kidneys if you have some to spare?

However Nvidia still have extremely poor driver support for even its current generation, plus general purpose GPU's are something new, so I am all ears to see where this card stands and more importantly its price/performance ratio.

EDIT:

Never mind the "6GB = Telsa, not for mainstream. Just like the GT200 Telsa, I think that had 4GB."
