*WARNING* Before you can play CE you MUST have your Halo CD Key!!!!!!!
Ok, got to Here (http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=410) and download and install CE.
This may take a while depending on your computer.
Sometimes a patch/update is needed, this is found here: Click (http://hce.halomaps.org//?nid=419)
Now, maps.
BFM Server.
To play in any server on CE you must have the correct maps, the BFM up to date map rotation can be found Here (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php/topic,54008.0.html).
Then, you need to put these into your map folder.
Firstly extract each Zip folder, and inside should be a .map file. This is the map itself.
Go to your Hard Drive, C:/ --> Program Files --> Microsoft Games --> Halo CE ---> Maps.
This should have by defualt Halo's normal maps, but might not, if so copy them over if you want them.
Now we take the .map file and put them in here.
Start up CE, and voila!
If you want other maps then go to HaloMaps (http://www.halomaps.org) to download them, and repeat the above to put them in.
Troubleshooting:
Note: The more maps you have in your folder, the longer Halo will take to load.
Note: CE and Halo can not both run at the same time.
Note: If you get the message, "an error occurred loading map" you don't have the map in your folder, or the correct version of it.
Happy CE-ing!!!!

I put the ZIP file of a map in the map folder and nothing happend

You need to UNzip the folder, then Drag the map into the halo CE Folder, hope this helps!

This topic helps a lot. I didn't even know I could have Halo: Custom Edition for free if I had my CD Key for the normal Halo. I can't wait to try out the new CE server! :D
-
I've tried to d/l the maps file 3 times. Each time the web interface looks like it wants to d/l the file, but the Firefox d/l function shows that nothing is being downloaded. At one point I got a "file not available" message.
Haaalp!
Belay the Haalp!....I tried with with MSExploder and it worked. One of my Firefox addons must not play well with that site.
Another edit.....there may be a problem with the file containing all of the maps. I had an awful time getting all the maps unzipped. Warthog Run Final and Domain Final simply would not unzip. I downloaded them separately from the Halo CE maps site.

Archer

yes i also had that problem yet thought that it was only me on my laptop...
anyhow there should be an updated list of all the maps CURRENTLY in the map rotation.
and also added on those which are NOT in the map pack.
i would do it if i could :P

It is asking me for a Halo CD, is this necessary?
-
yes it is. the Custom Edition used your cd key like it dose for halo combat evolved

FTR: Halo was made by Bungie FOR Microsoft under contract.
MS pushed the schedule and Bungie wasn't all that happy with what got released by MS....
But Bungie had rights to produce another version, but (I don't think) they were allowed to make any $$$ off of any spin-offs.... (At least not without giving some/most of it to MS.... ::) )
Hence the "freely-available" version from Bungie - called "Halo Custom Edition" is basically the "final release" that Bungie wanted to do for the original!
(I'm sure their licensing agreement required that only existing holders of the MS Halo product were to be offered Bungie's "finished version," too. Hence the CD requirement...)
So thank Bungie that Halo CE even exists!
(I can't say that I blame them (Bungie) when you see some of the dumb things in Halo Combat Evolved!... E.g. Names over teammate's heads!!)

Ah okay, because I had never needed the CD for Halo, but when CE asked for it I was thrown for a loop. Ill go dig it up then haha.

I'm aware that this is a fairly large bump, so save the board warning as I have something useful to add.
HaloCE doesn't require a Halo CD.
Go to program files, microsoft games, Halo custom edition, and look for haloupdate. Run that, bam, no more CD needed as you're now running the latest version of HCE(1.09)

Correct, but you DO need to have your valid Halo Combat Evolved 'key' though....

You don't actually as you're mos likely aware. shared keys are just banned across most servers except for servers that ban by ip. best to have your own legal key though.
