Basically, just post the name of the song that you consider most powerful (as in, has a deep meaning or just sort of inspires you in some way) and why you consider it powerful or any background about it if you know. I'll start with a Queen song (go figure :P) called Mother Love. The main reason I consider it powerful because it was Freddie Mercury's last song ever written. He actually died in the middle of the making and Queen guitarist Brian May had to finish writing it and sings the last verse, a painful reminder that Freddie is no longer with us :'( The most tearful part is at the end when they added audio clips of Freddie's best moments in life, like a clip from their Wembley performance, and a baby crying to symbolize Freddie being born, which is undoubtably the greatest moment in his life :') Does anyone else have any other songs they consider powerful?

Clapton's Tears in Heaven is pretty heartbreaking. Never much liked the song though myself.
Saw a doco on R&B - both Otis Redding's Sitting on the Dock of a Bay and Sam Cooke's A Change is Gonna Come were huge hits, but both releases posthumously. I think that's sad in the same way as Mother Love.
-
How you remind me - Nickelback
-
Well, it may sound corny, but I still get a lot of imagery from our national song (NOT our offical anthem) America the Beautiful (http://www.scoutsongs.com/lyrics/americathebeautiful.html).
Perhaps it comes from having extensively traveled the continent and seeing the people and the places in person.... :shobon:
-
Nope, not at all corny. Patriotic, but definitely not corny.
I gotta say "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin.
If you take the time and comprehend the lyrics, you'll see that it is in fact a truly beautiful song, more than just the legendary guitar playing.

I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing- Aerosmith
Crazy memories.......

Not sure of the name.
Another one is both Trail of Broken Hearts and Starfire. Both by Dragonforce.

My Immortal, and Because of you. Some of you might think they arent that powerful, but to me they are. They have an important meaning to me! And the best most Epic song! Dont Stop Believing!

DragonForce - Through The Fire And Flames
My Chemical Romance - Welcome To The Black Parade
Dafydd Iwan - Yma O Hyd (Welsh folk song. If you thought Mxy's choice was corny, this one is beyond! :P)
Lostprophets - Last Train Home
The Calling - Wherever You Will Go

I'm hoping I'm not the only person who knows this song but...
Thank You for the Music by ABBA
I'm a music geek. (no comment) So I love this song.
For those that love to find the meanings of songs, a lot of songs by Serj Tankian talk about the war and the reasons we should stop. Look for Empty Walls and The Unthinking Majority. (My 2 favorite songs!!! =) ) does that go there? the parentheses i mean?

Well, I'd have to say Memory...by myself. It's a song I wrote after my best friend ran infront of a train 5 years ago. If anyone would like to hear it, I'll send it xfire. I'm sure it's most powerful to me because of its personal meaning. I'll never know why he left because he never reached out to me or anyone else. I think it was and is the hardest thing I've ever gone through.
-
i have alot of bands rather than songs so ill list the best to me
1. Avenged Sevenfold (all time favorite!!!)
2. Lamb Of God
3.As i Lay Dying
4.Tool
5.Linkin Park

#1 of all time for me: "The Face of Love" - duet with Eddie Vedder and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, from the "Dead Man Walking" sound track. The raw emotion in this song just rips my heart out every time. Listen to those voices!! It is beauty and joy mingled with pain and desperate, hopeless love. If I'm driving my car when this song comes on I literally have to pull over until I've cried it out.
A good runner-up: "Off He Goes" - Pearl Jam (No Code) - ok so I guess Eddie Vedder gets to me - but this song is about the hope and joy of rediscovering old friendships, and the sadness and disappointment of losing them again. Oh, the lost opportunities! How we wish we had done things differently, way back when! The yearning for that past that will never be again...
-
I am corny just like Mxy. I am very patriotic and the National Anthem really gets to me....all three verses (we only sing the first verse). On a more spiritual note, I have to be careful if Bob Seager's version of "Little drummer boy" comes on when I am alone in the car. My eyes will well up with tears and I just might drive off the road. Same thing happens around Christams time if I hear "Christmas shoes".
Týþhooñ you mentioned some Metallica songs and I have to agree that many of those get to me too...they are very cathartic. Try listening to some of their less well known songs though...."Mama said" wow what a song!
-
Harry Chapin's "Cats in the Cradle". Makes every parent, especially us dads, realize what really is important.

Wow, I really wasn't expecting this thread to be such a big hit!! I guess I'll add a few more songs that I know of...
"The Show Must Go On" and "These are the Days of Our Lives" both by Queen (again, both made with Freddie's deteriorating health in mind)
"Breath" by Breaking Benjamin
"Never too Late" by Three Days Grace
and I'm sure I've heard a couple others, I just can't think of them right now XD
-
I'll go for a cliché : Eye of the Tiger :) always gets me pumped up!
that or The final countdown
both good old school songs
But I want to say that I loved "le gars de la compagnie" from Les Cowboys Fringuants.. wich is obviously a french song that you don't know about :XD: and it talks about the begining of the 20th century in Quebec with a twisted ending (I just love those).
