I can almost finish one (I can't push myself up again :P).

Well, I dont' really try to push myself up again, too hard. I imagine I could if there was a spider under me. A big one. A big spider that is on fire... I really don't like doing push-ups!

One of the traditions in the Huskie Marching Band is that when we win a game, we unbutton our capes, put our hats on backward, get on the floor and do pushups equal to our score.  We've had to do 40, rarely 50.  Sad to say, some of us never made it.  I went as far as I could, which was around 35-40, I lost count.

To be honest, I can do about 25 or so without stopping or slowing down from my original speed. But when I drag it out, I get about 30.

I rarely do push-ups. Only in the spring for lacrosse. But for fall and winter, it's soccer and track. All leg work outs.

Well there was a time, about 14 years ago, when i could do 75 straight. Now prolly more like 7 or 5, lol.

I used to be able to do about 50 something, but it's been a while I hate to say  :P.  We would have the Marines come to our school into the cafeteria at lunch and have push up contests to win stuff.  My friend did a little over 100, it was crazy.  I wish I could do that much.

I tried it, only 33.   :P

Yeh mith the army comes to our place in cambridge often because there is sports and uniform services and most people doing that are going into either firefighter, police or army. The marines and army are insane when it comes to training and fitness as they are so physically fit. Probably get over 100 in about 1min 30secs if i pushed myself harder ::) ;D

Hmm.  I just tried it.  I managed 30 before my arms gave out.  I managed a consistent pace up to 28, but the last two got hard pretty quick :-X.  Not too bad I guess for not having done any pushups in a long time :P.

At my best I can get out 70 - 75 in a set... obviously only 1 set at a time (or several if spread out a couple hours haha). Personally I enjoy doing push ups... they're a good workout and my and all me weirdness find them fun ;D.

Now, the question is how many crunches can you do? THOSE burn haha.

I do three sets of 60 when I work out (sets about a minute apart). One set with my feet elevated (about 45 degrees or more) and one with my chest elevated. The other is normal. I really don't know how many I can do at one time.
Title: Re: Push ups?
Post by: Mith on January 25, 2009, 06:02:37 AM
Pull ups are pretty hard to.  I can do about 13.  Those are really tough if you do em right.
Title: Re: Push ups?
Post by: Arya on January 25, 2009, 04:29:40 PM
I can only do 5 or so before my arms give out :P. I was on a volleyball team and in practice, every ball you served and missed, the whole team (the team was split in two, so half the team) had to do 5 push-ups, and we were missing quite alot (hey! it was the first season! could you blame us?? lol). But I haven't tried in awhile... lets see....

6!! yay!! I can do 20 girl push-ups though... I didn't know there was that much of a difference between the to kinds  :roll eyes:

Title: Push ups?
Post by: Forseti on January 26, 2009, 06:12:49 PM
Remember that I am old and fat, but I have been doing them a lot longer than the rest of you. I do 50 every morning before hopping into the shower and they are all done with the best form I can do and all in 5 breaths. I used to do many more, but found that I was more prone to be "too tired" to do them every morning and am much more consistent doing them limiting myself to 50 even when I am not feeling well. By the same token I do pull ups much less frequent in the evening so I limit them to 8 (or chin ups to 10) to make me more willing to do them since the number is easy when you keep at it for a long time. Did I mention I was old and fat...oh and married, so I am not trying to increase my number, bulk up or impress anyone, just maintenance. I have found the best exercises for people to do are ones they like or at least do not mind doing and will keep at consistently over the long term. It is pretty easy to pick just one (push ups or pull ups or sit ups or squat-thrusts) that will only take a 2-3min right when you wake up and stay at it if you do not over set your goals. You will notice a real difference in just 1-2 months. This 20-30min a day 4-6 times a week is for athletes and let them have it I say.

I can not answer the original question because I never tried a max number when I was doing more, but I always do sets in 5s as bigger numbers require more controlled breathing and 5s and 10s are easy to remember with 1 breath. 75 was common but I do not recall ever doing sets of 80. I can say that at one time I could do sit ups non-stop essentially forever and without discomfort after I got past 75-80 yet I never have had wash-board abs.

Post by: Plixity on January 26, 2009, 07:01:35 PM
Yeah thats basically what I do Forseti... minus the whole 5 breaths thing :P. I used to be able to do sit ups pretty much non stop too, but crunches work the abs a lot more so I migrated over to those suckers.

I was content with 1 push up... then after watching a simpsons episode I was down hearted when the character 'Lenny' turned to Homer and said:

"A push up consists of an up AND a down part."

So none i'm afraid... I'll try weight lifting carrot sticks, then spuds, then bags of frozen peas, then dumpsters, then my dad's car, then the house, then my town, then the whole of the southern hemisphere...

The soon, Noddu shall take over the world Mwhahahahahaha...

And order everyone to do starjumps for my ammusing pleasure.

(But serioudly like 24)  :P

Popped down to the library to check out the current standing world record. If we are sitting comfortably, i shall begin

*Greatest number of push-ups in one hour is 3,416, by Canadian Roy Berger, at the Central Canada Exhibition, Ottawa, Canada, on 30th August 1998

*Most push-ups using the backs of the hands in one hour is 1,940, set by Paddy Doyle, at Stamina's Boxing Self Defence Gym in Erin Go Bragh Sports Center, Birmingham, UK, on 8th Nov, 2007

Note:-Paddy Doyle also set two other records the same day:-

*Most full contact kicks in one hour:- 5,750

*Most squats in one hour:- 4,708

(*Source-Guinness Book Of World Records 2009)

Phew :toot:

i did 38

at the end of wrestling season last year i could 90-100 in a row, i was quite amazed with myself, now after not doing wresting like 40 is my max at 1 time.

I remember one wrestling practice which is 3 hrs long with lots of sprints, drills, and live wrestling. we did a total of 400 push ups, and 250 crunchs, along with 80 6-inches leg raise thingys. Our coach wasnt too happy with us that day...
