Title: Forum Update!
Post by: BFM_dStruct on March 04, 2012, 01:02:49 AM
Hi Guys

As you may or may not have noticed there has been a Forum update here at BFM, and as a result, our old theme no longer would have worked and needed to be remade. This theme is still under quite a bit of construction and there are some bugs that I am well aware of and are striving to fix them as soon as possible.

I have spent the last week or so trying to find errors myself in my own test environment, however I can't find them all so it is now your turn to help me out :) Please post any bugs that you may have noticed on the forums.

Please note guys, there is a difference between bugs and design. This was not made to look absolutely identical to the old version, even though it does follow some major trends. An example of what is not a bug is telling me:

 - The info centre is completely different!

Bugs are things like borders not matching up together and so forth. Anyway, please be patient as I try and fix all these problems. I will let you know of my progress I fix your problems by editing your post in this thread.

Thank You :)

The Roster link side column on the website(not forum) does not work. It says:
Quote
Unknown column 'realName' in 'field list'

Thanks - Fixed ~ BFM_dStruct

If anyone using IE is having a problem with buttons not working (or anything else for that matter) try changing the setting for Compatibility Mode.  In the IE menu, select Tools > Compatibility View.

For example, I could not get to the search screen when using IE, click on the button at the top of the page and nothing would happen.  Works fine in Firefox and Chrome.

Thanks - Should be fixed now. Still requiring a little bit of testing for confirmation. ~ BFM_dStruct

It's sort of related to the bug above - the staff list isn't in alphabetical order either (sorted instead by date of joining the forums, I think).

There's not enough lines anywhere! Especially in the index!

I've made a first attempt at this, how do you think it is now?  Kiwi

The recruit application isn't working correctly. It says that I'm not authorized and not logged in but I am otherwise I couldn't post this.

EDIT:

Didn't see this (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/index.php?topic=58303.msg432976;boardseen#new). Forget my post :P

Not really sure if its a bug or not but on some peoples signatures i cant see them and i cant even right click and show image on them. example on kiwi's very top Sig it wont show for me and i cant right click and show. it wont give me the option 2 and I'm on google chrome

Also to note. i had to take a screen shot to be sure of myself. when you first come to the forums under announcements i notice a very quick change in the side or whatever you call it. it has 3 things that are all together.

it goes something like this.
 the welcome message, then underneath that is the interesting in joining message and then underneath that is the For ventrilo access message/thing. i can post a screen shot if you like but it was a real quick change b4 it showed the actual starting. it shows when refreshed for me

That could be because Chrome knows that the image doesn't exist (the server returned 404 Not Found) so there's no point in giving the user the option.

I can't say for sure, but is it normal that we have around 30 guests at any given time looking at different things on "whos online?"

Edit:  They are all looking at seemingly random posts from years ago...

Those are Google and Bing mostly, and a few Chineses web crawlers.  We want them to index the site, but we need to figure out how to just hide them from Who's Online ~Kiwi

It isn't a bug but... I miss the many colours to choose from. For the text in a post. I'm sorry if that was not appropriate to post here.
Edit: Oh... apparently you could still use them, though they aren't in the list "Change Color".
Edit Second: Thank you Fraggle. :)

Here Elk... JANE gave me this a while ago and i kept a copy. You may find it useful.

We are aware of this one.  It is something that needs to be fixed in SMF.  They are working on it and say it will be fixed in the next release.

Probably not a forum changeover issue, but the Announcement box flashes the message below before doing smooth animations like it normally does.
(http://i.imgur.com/hTBWR.png)

Also, for whatever reason, in the drop-down menu of Attachments and other options that is below the text box when posting a reply, "Stick this topic." was selected at default. Might have just been me as this is my first post after the update.

I have looked at my own SMF forum I made a while ago when messing round and found:
In admin area go to:
Members -> Search Engines -> Settings.
Under "Show spiders in the online list".
Select "Not at all".

Hope this helps you guys.

Hi Guys!

Hopefully you're starting to see the small changes and fixes appearing on the forums. We are aware that it was quite a big difference when we first unlocked the forum after the update. Please be mindful that there are still little bugs that we are working on and I assure you that I am striving to fix all these bugs as quickly as possible.

I would also like to thank Kiwi for putting the borders back on the forums main page, as it was something that I just couldn't fix :P

Also, there will be a couple of more updates tomorrow including:

 - The 119 Colours (I think) will be coming back to the forums.
 - The autofil on certain boards will be returning
 - The Polls will be fixed
 - The Board Index borders will be fixed (Already Done)
 - The Bottom of the bored index will have its border to complete it.

And much more little things :)

Yes, thank you all.

In Recent Unread Topics, for all topics in the forum as well as locally in a board, there is a button to the lower right, next to the "mark as read" button, which isn't showing an icon.

Hmm, okay then. I guess it would be possible to do through the ftp, I am not 100% sure so keep a backup.

Open:
/Path/To/Forums/Sources/Who.php

Find:
$spiderContext = array();
Comment out from above this to above $url_data = determineActions($url_data);

Find:
// Are we showing spiders?
Comment out from under this to above    $url_data = determineActions($url_data);

I am not 100% sure.

Are you talking about the 'New Topic', 'New Poll', 'Notify' and 'Mark Read' buttons being in different order?

Yes.

And I'd further argue that the order should be (left-to-right):

'Mark Read'       'New Topic'        'New Poll'        'Notify'

due to the likelihood that that is the left-to-right descending order of use. (And the fact that I think that's how it was before?)

(Ya, I've done human-computer interaction/user interface stuff too....  ::) )

Also, a suggestion for ease of reading only those boards that have new posts: Put a mini-"NEW" icon after mainline topic name (the ones on the top line for each board) when there are any new posts to that board. (NOT to its sub-boards, as they already get them now, which is GREAT, BTW!)

As a result the diamond to the far left of each board would now only serve as a general notice that there's SOMETHING new on that board and/OR one of its sub-boards....

As it is now when the diamond is highlighted you always have to examine the main board to see if it has a new post, since the diamond highlights even if there's just one new post, at any depth in that board.

With the "new" icon you'd know even from the top view that there are posts, and exactly which board and sub-boards have them.

Title: Re: Forum Update!
Post by: BFM_dStruct on March 06, 2012, 10:28:02 PM
How bout I make it so that the Diamond only lights up if the Main Board has a new post and leave the "new" icon only for the sub "child" boards? :P

Some of the Lines are still missing.

While not a big bug, it is somewhat visually unsettling.

In the Personal Message main page, the displayed box and text should be in GREEN, NOT RED when it says "Your message has been sent successfully."

Use of red notification should be only for hazards or emergencies.

And ya, I agree with Liam: Those arrows ARE unsettling!   :siderofl:    :winkgrin:

I don't know if anyone else has the same issue?

When I start Firefox and try to log into the forums using the quick login in the upper right hand corner I get the error that my password was incorrect. I'm 100% sure that I didn't type it wrong.
However, this error doesn't occur when I already was logged in. So I logged off, closed Firefox, restarted it, tried to log in and then ... "Incorrect password" :bang: I tried this several times now and it's all the same.

No we did not "get rid" of them...they just did not survive the upgrade.  We will just need to dig those templates out of the back up files and get them put back in.

UPDATE...I just loggen in and out on Firefox and everything was fine.

Hmm it seems that I'm the only one having this issue. Have you closed Firefox before logging back in? For me it just happens when I start FF and login for the first time.
I even typed my password into notepad and copy and pasted it to see if I had a typo. But I pasted it into the quick login -> wrong password. Then the normal login page came with my pre-filled user name and I pasted the same password -> login succesful. This is really starnge.

I used to get that from work.  I'd be fine at home (primarily IE), but at work it would always say invalid password, then I'd retype it and it would log me in.  Pretty sure it was FF, but might have been IE.

It got to where at work I'd just type my user and press enter to get the invalid password prompt, THEN type my password.

I'm not sure if this is related or unrelated to the Forum Update, but on the main "bfmracing.net" page, the serving listings on the right no longer provide you with information, such as map and number players in server, when you click on them (with the exception of the vent listing).

No that's unrelated, the server query wasn't working well, with a couple of bugs, so was taken down. Not sure when there'll be a replacement.

At least, that's what I'd thought. A little learning...

Not so much that as we actually changed our forum and website database provider. That function was apart of our old database and could not be moved and will most likely not make a return to our website, at least in the near future.

Alphabetizing the staff list is being worked on and getting some sort of server query back on the main web page is something we want to do but it will definitely not work using the same coding we had before.  We just need to find a totally new way to do it.

It seems I'm not able to edit someone's post using the quick modify thingy, this icon in the bottom right of everyone's post:  (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/Themes/BFM/images/icons/modify_inline.gif)

I can edit my own posts using it, but I can't edit other people's posts with it. It opens the text field, but when I press Save, it goes back with nothing changed. I can edit other people's posts using the regular Modify button.

Also, I can't see who's voted in polls, Majors and higher used to be able to.

Hey, while I'm here, is it possible to have a brighter online icon? Or a darker offline icon? It's not super important, but they're so close in color, it's hard to tell (when looking next to their name in a thread, in a person's profile, it'll say "online" or "offline" next to the icon).

(http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/Themes/BFM/images/useron.gif)  (http://www.bfmracing.net/forums/Themes/BFM/images/useroff.gif)

:P  They're easy to tell when they're right next to each other.

That is a forum permission thing and something that I cannot fix.

The icons were taken directly from our old forums. Also, those icons you posted are the ones our forum is currently using.

For testing purposes, may I ask how you turned that feature on?

Not acceptable, I need to know who's voting on what immediately.  :winkgrin:

There must have been online or offline text  then, because I never had a problem telling if someone was on or off (or did I?). Poo! But oh well.

I don't think it's a feature that can be turned on or off, nor is it a permissions thing. I see them on all posts because of my rank, but even someone who's just a registered forum guest should see them on their own posts. As a Sgt, you should be able to see them on most posts I would think. Here (http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z234/JaneDeaux_47/edit_thingamabob.png) is what I see, if you don't have them. If that's the case, Slim's getting a PM...

Thanks for looking at this and for putting up with me, d3   :hug:

The icon never used to be on the left of the users name. I will look into adding an online and offline button just for you :hug:

I actually have it there and was just confused lol. I tried aswell and it wasn't saving for me either, but I was getting a Loading bar appear on top of my browser. It must be a Javascript issue. I'll add it too my ever-growing list :p

In the, "Change Color" drop down menu. There Is no longer, "White". There Is only Wheat, and Whitesmoke. I remember seeing White earlier, not sure what happened to It. But now It's gone. I can still enter In the code manually, though however.

the 16 most basic/most used colours are up the top of that list,
White is above AliceBlue and below Gray
but you could enter the code manually if you wanted to,

Um, it's great that the (16) most commonly used colors are up at the top of the list now, TYVM for that, but...

Could you put them (the top 16) in alpha order, perhaps?  (And I can only assume that they will be displayed in their stated color at some point, perhaps?  If not, could the top 16 be displayed in color at least?)

Thanks again for doing all this, those working on this huge project!

This may be underway already, but to go with the colours theme :D

could the word of the colour be in the colour of the colour that the word is saying. ok i think i over-complicated that but you probably understand me :P

Putting them in their colors is possible, but nowhere near as easy as in the old software.

If Kiwi or I figure out how it is done, then I will be more then happy to spend the time going through and making them all appear in their colours, it is just we don't know how to do even one colour yet.

Also, they will be in Alphabetical order on the next update :)

Go to Themes/default/scripts/editor.js and edit it.

Scroll down to lines 1567 to 1568 where it says :

if (sSelectValue != '')
   sOptions += '<option value="' + sSelectValue.php_htmlspecialchars() + '">' + oCurButton.oOptions[sSelectValue].php_htmlspecialchars() + '</option>';

change that to :

if (sSelectValue != '') {
   var vall = sSelectValue.php_htmlspecialchars();
   var afontcolor = ' style="color:' + vall + ';"';
   sOptions += '<option value="' + vall + '"' + afontcolor + '>' + oCurButton.oOptions[sSelectValue].php_htmlspecialchars() + '</option>';
}

and don't forget the curly braces :winkgrin:

Yay! It works

Will be back in the next update!

P.s - I may be PMing you with more questions as they appear if you wouldn't mind?

I think this one might've gotten lost in the details, but when you go into a board with children, the diamonds at the front of Child boards aren't activating when those boards have "new"/unread posts in them.

A graphics issue might be to look at how the profile homepage stats are presented. The pie charts are rather unclear and sometimes even just plain wrong as well, e.g 5% shows up now very clearly but is there but 4% is not visible at all.

When in the PM's Inbox (and likely the Outbox, too?...): When you mark something's LABEL it now takes you to that PM. It used to keep you right there at the Inbox/Outbox listing display.

Now I have to scroll back up to the top of the page to get back to the listing instead of the posts themselves.

(This is a real pain if you're marking several PMs, each of them twice.... (e.g. Remove a label, add a label; Next PM, remove a label, add a label, ....)
