Blue Screen of Death!!!
« on: February 26, 2008, 08:07:42 PM »
All the info I know about my computer that I can give you is this.  It is a Dell, and it runs windows xp.  If you need anymore info. about anything, then you are going to have to explain on how to find out more about my computer.  So here is my problem.

My family calls it the blue screen of death.  Once when the computer started having the blue screen of death problem, it turned out that the problem was a magnet stuck to the side of the pc.  Now it has come back again, and there is no magnet what so ever on it anywhere.  The blue screen of death is a blue screen, of course, with all this gibberish (letters & numbers), and it crashes the computer.  The next time it pops up, I will try to get everything that it says, and I will post it here, hoping that you can help me, but it doesn't pop up as often as it use to.  So I might give you what it says in maybe a couple days or weeks, but if you might know my problem or have any suggestions, please let me know.
I'm not really smart at understanding computers than I am at running programs.

You could always try to restore the system back to a date before the evil blue screen of death started to appear the second time. Or if the warranty is still valid you can try to call Dell.

So, what is this nividia display that supposedly was your problem?

It's likely to have absolutely nothing to do with YOUR problem (and should probably get a thread of its own... Fuzion?)

Um, PLEASE tell me you did a FULL "thorough" disk scan on all the drives on that machine once you found it had a "computer eraser" stuck to its side?

If not, I'm 1) suprised that it went away when you removed the magnet!, and 2) suprise it ran this long without the problem showing up again!

It's EXTREMELY possible you scrambled some stuff on your computer by having a magnet stuck to it!  (And by "scrambled" I mean "stuck a mixer into its open skull and ran it for a few minutes/day/weeks - however long that magnet was on there!)

So, before you do ANYTHING else, do a "thorough" disk scan on each drive listed in "My Computer" as follows:

0) Open "My Computer"

1) RIGHT-click the next (for the first, that's be the "C:") drive to be scanned and select "Properties" from the popup - to bring up the "Properties" menu for that drive.

2) Select the "Tools" tab, and then the "Check Now..." button in the "Error-checking" pane.

3) CHECK BOTH BOXES, then select the "Start" button.

4) Go watch TeeVee for many hours / sleep!

5) Upon completion you'll have to select the "OK" button from the "Disk Check Complete" popup.

6) Go to #1, selecting the next disk drive listed in "My Computer...."
If no more drives, you're done!

See if computer behaves better.  If not, that's be no surprise to me, because who know WHAT might've gotten messed up.

If possible - and you know how* - you could try a Windows Repair at this point, knowing that you're not trying to fix stuff that's on a corrupted disk drive....

Finally: If you ever do another Disk Check run, uncheck the bottom box or you'll have to sleep through the whole thing again!

*If you really want to try this, I can point you to some good walkthrus, but it's not for the novice computer person.....

It wasn't fixed immediately when I took off the magnet.
We had to get it repaired by a specialist or someone.
It might still might (possibly) be problems from before.  Am I wrong?

One can only assume that if you paid someone to fix it, they did what I was suggesting at some point.

(Note the "One can only assume" part??)

Dunno what else until you get the info from the blue screen message....

If you're a techy-advanced person you could always run Spinrite 6.0 on the drive and repair the corrupted sectors. I've used it to repair drives that got put right next to an unshielded speaker and stuff like that. It's smart enough to rebuild the damaged data so it's almost as good as new if not bit-for-bit perfect. Costs a bit of money though.

Cell phones will ALSO scramble a hard drive! If you have them close enough, the occasional EMP they release will zap recording surfaces like hard drives and tapes. Just depends on whether or not there's enough shielding between the drive and the phone.
License and registration, sir!

One time I had my cellphone next to my monitor, then someone called me and the monitor screen started shaking like water.
