pc fire?
« on: August 12, 2007, 08:42:56 AM »
well i was playing on my pc (this morning at 2 XD) and here is the story:

well i was playing on my pc at like....2 in the morning and suddenly it made a sound like a floppy trying to load but it was quieter, then the screen went all crazy and glitchy and thick grey smoke started pouring out the back. i unplugged it immidiately and took it out to the garage and let it sit over night. i wiped all the dust off of the power supply fan, and i plugged it in to see if it just over heated or if the dust heated up and started on fire. well plug in a monitor only and then turn it on, and it makes the same noise that it made when it first started smoking, but this time it didn't smoke. it didn't do anything. but it started up. so that means the power supply is still good right?

i also noticed that it wasn't making the startup beeping sound, but also my monitor was also not working. i have a feeling my motherboard is shot (again) either that or the processor is shot and its affecting everything. or my grafix card is shot and i don't have on board video i guess.

any ideas on how i can find out what piece is messed up?

ok well here is what i am trying to do now.

well seeing as i don't want to spend any more than i have to on a pc (such as the $800+ for a dell gameing pc), i looked around to see what i could find. the price varries depending on what still works in the pc i have now. i am hoping the processor still works.

Mobo:$79

Processor: $87

Memory:$89

mouse: $40
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=212901

Mouse pad: $36
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=212907

Power Supply: $64 , $40 after rebate
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=371925

headset: $20
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=361702

Grafix Card: $50 , $40 after rebate
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=321079

Total $465

after rebate: $431

If processor still works: dunno if my current processor is 65nm or not. if it is i am in luck and only am going to spend $345

i have a nice case, a good monitor (the whole reason i have to buy a new gfx card....the mobo doesn't have DVI), and a good keyboard. i suppose i don't need that mouse pad, i could get a cheaper one. but i liked the look of that one. i have hdd's and a floppy.

*EDIT* also i would be willing to cut out the mouse to take it down to $305, and maybe even the mouse pad to take it down to $269.

*EDIT (again)* and notice that most of it is retail. comes with everything XD

if anyone has one of the above parts just laying around (but it still works, and you don't use it), or something equivelent or better that works with that mother board, please don't hesitate to pm me and tell me about it.

the links for some reason don't go directly to the page...gimmi a few.
