Graphics Card Options *BOUGHT*
« on: August 02, 2008, 09:21:01 PM »
Ok, i just bought Call of Duty 4 only to realise, I DONT HAVE A GRAPHICS CARD!
So I'm searching the web for a cheap ($0.00 to $70.00) Graphics Card that has vertex shader capabilities. I dont really care what the in-game graphics look like, as long as it PLAYS THE GAME!  :bang:   :bang: Ben did show me one, but i'm afraid its just a tad on the exspenive side. Any ideas?

Well then, we'll need to know what type of device slots you have in your computer!

You'll have one of several (most likely two) types: AGP or PCI-E.

If you don't already know for sure which it is, the only way to find out which you have is to check the spec's for your computer (motherboard/mainboard) or open it up.

If you have the documentation that came with the computer you can check there. Or can tell me the brand and SPECIFIC model and I can look it up for you.

K then:

The Minimum System Requirements for CoD4 says "Nvidia GeForce 6600 or ATI Radeon 9800 Pro." The recommended System Requirements are "Nvidia GeForce 7800 or ATI Radeon X1800."

Since the time-frame you're looking for is "the recent past," that would give the nod to the Nvidia line (which is the better bang for the buck" during that time - and up until about "now.")

Since the price for technology that old & "out-of-date" (yes, GA lifecycle is about 6 months!  :o ), I'd suggest that you get the "Recommended" board, as the price should be pretty good, and therefore gameplay should be what the gamemakers expected people to see.

Hence I'd suggest you get an Nvidia GeForce 7800 - or the best equivalent that can still be found! - like this one, for instance? ($50 after rebate!)

I'm currently using a 8600 GT because my 9600 GT OC is overheating, and with everything on low I can get 125 FPS constant with it.

I would go with the 7800 though.

On the Higher scale of cards to Prplpzn, i have recommended the 8800 GS. which plays most games well, and will even have a pop at Crysis!

Pros: Great card plays COD 4 flawsly (which i now hate because no Game pad support) and it looks great Also plays Dirt Ok install because they hid the drive cd an instruction under the card board and then under a piece of paper (What the heck)

No, it wont run it flawlessly, that is a lie, i can tell you that now.

(i don't know why, but people seem to like posting "runs crysis with everything on high" on most cards. trying to get sales i guess, but this card would not handle COD4 methinks.

I think Ben is right there is another guy that says that the card is NOT a gaming card. COD is a very demanding game. I would have to think that a card not made for gaming would have a tough time with COD.

Max: As I mentioned in my post earlier, 1) it's now quite difficult to find a 7800!, and 2) the one's that I could find were more expensive than the 8500 GT I suggested above.

Also, I'm running dual BFG 9600GT OCs (SLi) with no heat prob' whatsoever! (And I only have one case fan!)

And PurplePizano: I wouldn't bother with either of those ATI cards if I were you....

Are you trying to go lower than the $50 card I suggested? You said up to $70....
