OnLive - the future of gaming?
« on: March 25, 2009, 03:24:35 PM »

Anyone know anything about this?  Involves cloud-computing.  No need for a state of the art PC/graphics card, you can play on your TV.  Small, iPhone-sized console.  Looks interesting.   Probably US-only...

This sounds pretty cool. It'll get to the point one day where we'll never have to leave our homes for anything! :P

FAQ

Q: How much will this cost?

A: As we get closer to our launch we will be disclosing more details about pricing and availability.

(Expensive, very expensive.)

Yeah, sounds expensive!

I imagine they'll tell you that you subscribe and never have to upgrade to a newer, better console ever again.

Pretty cool.  I'm interested about how they do this, also.

And... I am incredible tempted to sign up for the Beta....

It looks as if this is "nothing more" than a "remote console" sort of thing: All the work is done "offsite" and it streams you the resultant screen images.

This idea has failed miserably in the past, but the difference this time appears to be some "proprietary technology" in their "mini-console" (or the equivalent software they give/sell you) that recomposes the screen image much faster than previous attempts.

Interestingly, however, I see the same problem with this "new, cool idea" that the author of this AP article describes.

Namely the company's own estimates of their ~GB/hour connection usage!!!!  :o  :o  :o

The issue I see with this is the fact that your internet speeds have to be pretty fast to get a good upload and download rate. If some one else has a better connection, he will be able to do things quicker than you. Which in some games may lead to life or death. Other than that sounds like a cool idea!

Thanks BigmanJT!                                                              Thanks Spood!

You know, at first I thought cool.

However, I question how they will work with internet speeds and possibley expenses. It could be a good idea, but just expensive to the point where it would be cheaper to actually get the console or build a computer to play the game.
