Math! *Jimothy Helped*
« on: April 29, 2009, 05:01:48 PM »
Ok, I have to do a presentation on Social Security Numbers for my math class. One of the things I have to do is figure out how many possible SSN there are. Here are the needed facts. (BTW I have an answer but need checking)

A SSN is of the format  yyy-yy-yyyy  where y = any number from 0-9
Any number "group" cannot have all 0's   ex. 000-00-0000 is not valid
And the numbers 987-65-4320 and 987-65-4329 are reserved for advertisements and therefore should not count.
The group of three at the front cannot be 734 through 749, cannot be 666, and cannot be higher than 772

I reckon that given the information provided there are 747,375,255 possible SSNs. That's 9999*99*755. This is also probably slightly wrong. It's worth adding that SSNs could have a 3-digit start code higher than 772 at some point in the future.

This is also OFFICIALLY the first time that this number has appeared online.

OK, let's do the math.

The first three numbers have the following possibilities:

000-772
minus
000 (1 number)
minus
666 (1 number)
minus
734-749 (16 numbers)

Therefore, the front 3 numbers have 754 possible combinations.

The second 2 numbers:

100 combinations
-
00
= 99

The final 4 numbers:
10000
-
0000
= 9999

=746,385,354 possible combinations.

746,385,354
-
987-65-4320 through to 987-65-4329 (10 numbers)
-
078-05-1120 (Check Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_security_number)

Thus, the total amount of SSNs available (to our knowledge) is:

746,385,354 - 10
=
746,385,343

This does not include other possibly disallowed numbers, such as "123-45-6789", "012-34-5678" etc.

NOW

Approximately 387 million of the SSNs are in use. This leaves 359,385,343 numbers still to be used. (Just under half).

There are 11,783 babies born each day in the US. Lets assume that every person grows up to get an SSN and that you don't get it until you are 18. That means that, on this average there 77,461,442 (including leap days!) people under 18 in America who will get SSNs. In 18 years there will be 281,923,901 possible SSNs left.

This means, that in 23926 days, THE USA WILL RUN OUT OF SSNS AND THE WORLD WILL GO INTO CHAOS!!

THAT'S RIGHT!

Thursday November 1st 2074 is D-Day for the world!

Hydra, what is 773-18?? It certainly isn't 754. So you're out by 989901.

Also since numbers starting with anything above 772 aren't used, then you don't have to account for the 987-65-4320 numbers either.

Even more frightening is the thoguht that, given that the SS board-thingy assigns 5.5million new numbers a year on average and has assigned 420million so far, Hydra's Doomsday will actually occur in 2067!!!  :siren: :siren: :siren: :siren: :siren: :siren: :siren:

But don't forget the exponential increase in human population! It will occur before then.

I actualy reran the numbers and the world's D-Day will be around November 20, 2014 because there r more bitrhs than deaths and when you die your ssn is cleared and all records on it are removed and stored Then it is given to someone else

thanks slayton for the sig^

I think 2014 is wrong, because if numbers are used again, the date would be pushed further back.

And I don't think the rerun the numbers, because it is possible to find out who had 001-01-0001, and they are dead.

According to this, social security numbers are not reassigned.

FYI: Geek2 is referencing:

"Q20:  Are Social Security numbers reused after a person dies?

A:  No. We do not reassign a Social Security number (SSN) after the number holder's death. Even though we have issued over 415 million SSNs so far, and we assign about 5 and one-half million new numbers a year, the current numbering system will provide us with enough new numbers for several generations into the future with no changes in the numbering system."
